The electrical ground circuit may consist of an appropriately sized electrical wire connecting the ground lug in the unit control box to the building electrical service Goodman panel. 3 ther methods of grounding are permitted if performed in accordance with the National Electric ode (NE) /American National Standards Institute (ANSI) /National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 70 and local/state codes. DANGE ABN MNXIDE PISNING HAZAD Special Warning for Installation of Furnace or Air Handling Units in Enclosed Goodman Areas such as Garages, 38 Utility ooms or Parking Areas. arbon monoxide producing devices (such as an automobile, space heater, gas water heater, etc.) should not be operated in enclosed areas such as unventilated garages, utility rooms or parking areas because of the danger of carbon monoxide () poisoning resulting from the exhaust emissions. If a furnace or air handler is installed in an enclosed area such as a garage, utility room or parking area and a carbon monoxide producing device is operated therein, there must be adequate, direct outside ventilation. This ventilation is necessary to avoid the danger of poisoning which can occur if a carbon monoxide producing device continues to operate in the enclosed area. arbon monoxide emissions can be (re)circulated throughout the structure if the furnace or air handler is operating in any mode. can cause serious illness including permanent brain damage or death. IMPTANT: The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued various regulations regarding the introduction and disposal of refrigerants in this unit. Failure to follow these regulations may harm the environment and can lead to the imposition of substantial fines. These regulations may vary by jurisdiction. A certified technician must perform the installation and service of this product. Should questions arise, contact your local EPA office. This product is designed and manufactured to permit installation in accordance with national codes. It is the installer s responsibility to install this unit in accordance with national codes and/or prevailing local codes and regulations. 2

3 These instructions are intended as a general guide only for use by qualified persons and do not supersede any national or local codes in any way. ompliance with all local, state, or national codes pertaining to this type of equipment should be determined prior to installation. ead this entire instruction manual, as well as the instructions supplied in separate equipment, before starting the installation. All models are designed for indoor installation only. The installation of the air handler, field wiring, warm air ducts, etc., must conform to the requirements of the National Electrical ode, ANSI/NFPA No. 70 (latest edition) in the United States, and any state laws, and local ordinances (including plumbing or wastewater codes). Local authorities having jurisdiction should be consulted before installation is made. Such applicable regulations or requirements take precedence over the general instructions in this manual. Install the conditioned air plenum, ducts and air filters (not provided) in accordance with NFPA 90B Standard for the Installation of Warm Air Heating and Air-onditioning Systems (latest edition). The air handler is provided with flanges for the connection of the plenum and ducts. Air filters (not provided) must be listed as lass 2 furnace air filters. The air handler can be used with -0A from the factory. The air handler is shipped from the factory completely assembled. Some models are configured for upflow air discharge only, and some models are configured for upflow or horizontal left-hand air discharge. The air handler cabinet conforms to 2 percent or less air leakage. Do not remove the cabinet knockouts until it has been determined which knockouts will need to be removed for the installation. Tools and Parts Gather the required tools and parts before starting installation. ead and follow the instructions provided with any tools listed here. System equirements The air handler is designed to match, and must be used with outdoor units as rated. The indoor units are manufactured with an interchangeable refrigerant metering orifice to provide optimum refrigerant control and system performance with a variety of different capacities of outdoor units. In some cases, the rating of the outdoor unit may require that the air handler coil assembly orifice be changed to obtain rated performance. Location equirements NTE: When used on cooling applications, excessive sweating may occur when the air handler is installed in a very humid space. UL Listed/SA approved wire connectors eplacement orifice (if needed). See Verify rifice Size. The correct orifice size may be contained in the replacement orifice package located inside the control box of the outdoor unit. If this package does not contain the correct orifice for your air handler, you must purchase the correct orifice size. If the air handler is installed in an unconditioned space, sealant should be applied around the electrical wires, refrigerant tubing, and condensate lines where they enter the cabinet. Electrical wires should be sealed on the inside where they exit the conduit opening. Sealant is required to avoid air leakage and condensate from forming inside the air handler, control box, and on the electrical controls. The air handler must be installed in such a way as to allow free access to the coil/filter compartment and blower/control compartment. The air handler must be installed in a level position to ensure proper condensate drainage. Installation learances Non-Duct eturn loset Installation The air handler can be installed in a closet with a false bottom to form a return air plenum or be installed with a return air plenum under the air handler. Louvers or return air grilles are field supplied. Local codes may limit the application of systems without a duct return to singlestory buildings. 3

4 For an air handler installed in a closet with a louvered return opening, the minimum open area for the louvers will be as shown below. 8" and 2" (.7 cm and 6 cm) models 30" and 36" (76.2 cm and 9. cm) models 2", 8" and 60" (06.7 cm, 2.9 cm and 2. cm) models If the free area is not known, assume a 2% free area for wood louvers or a 7% free area for metal louvers or grilles. Using the louver dimensions and the 2% or 7% assumption, determine if the louver open area meets the minimum open area listed in the previous chart. If the return air plenum is used, the return air grille should be immediately in front of the opening in the plenum to allow for the free flow of return air. When the air handler is not installed in front of the opening, there must be adequate clearance around the air handler to allow for the free flow of return air. The unit clearance from a combustible surface may be 0". Allow a minimum of 2" (6 cm) in front of the unit for service clearance. Do not install the air handler in a location that violates the instructions provided with the condenser. If the unit is located in an area with high ambient temperature and/or high humidity, the air handler may have condensation on the casing. n these installations, a wrap of 2" (. cm) fiberglass insulation with a vapor barrier is recommended. onsult all appropriate regulatory codes prior to determining final clearances. When installing this unit in an area that may become wet, elevate the unit with a sturdy, non-porous material. In installations that may lead to physical damage (for example, in a garage) it is recommended that a barrier be installed to avoid such damage. Electrical equirements 320 sq. in. (2,06 cm 2 ) 360 sq. in. (2,323 cm 2 ) 0 sq. in. (2,903 cm 2 ) WANING To avoid the Goodman risk of injury, electrical 3shock or death, the furnace must be electrically grounded in accordance with local codes or, in their absence, with the latest edition of the National Electric ode (NE). Use copper conductors only. All field wiring must be done in accordance with National Electrical ode, applicable requirements of UL and local codes where applicable. Electrical wiring, disconnect means and overcurrent protection are to be supplied by the installer. efer to the air handler rating plate for maximum overcurrent protection, minimum circuit ampacity, as well as operating voltage. The power supply must be sized and protected according to the specifications supplied on the product. This air handler is factory-configured for 20-volt, single phase, 60 cycles. For 208-volt applications, see 208-Volt onversion in the Make Electrical onnections section. For optional electric heater applications, see Accessories. efer to the instructions provided with the accessory for proper installation. Ductwork equirements Install the conditioned air plenum, ducts and air filters (not provided) in accordance with NFPA 90B Standard for the Installation of Warm Air Heating and Air-onditioning Systems (latest edition). The air handler is provided with flanges for the connection of the plenum and ducts. The air handler is equipped with flanges that can form a filter rack for the installation of the air filter, or the filter may be installed as part of the return air duct system. Air filters must be listed as lass 2 furnace air filters. AUTIN Do not operate this product without all the ductwork attached. Goodman 39 Supply and return ductwork must be adequately sized to meet the system s air requirements and static pressure capabilities. To ensure correct system performance, the ductwork is to be sized to accommodate 37 to 2 FM per ton of cooling with the static pressure not to exceed 0." W.. Ductwork should be insulated with a minimum of " (2. cm) thick insulation with a vapor barrier in conditioned areas or 2" (. cm) minimum in unconditioned areas. Supply plenum should be the same size as the flanged opening provided around the blower outlet and should extend ideally at least 36" (9. cm) from the air handler before turning or branching off plenum into duct runs. The plenum forms an extension of the blower housing and minimizes air expansion losses from the blower.

5 INSTALLATIN INSTUTINS Inspect Shipment These air handlers are completely factory assembled, and all components are performance tested. Each air handler consists of a blower assembly, refrigerant coil, and controls, in an insulated galvanized steel factory finished enclosure. Knockouts are provided for electrical wiring entrance. heck the air handler rating plate to confirm specifications are as ordered. Upon receipt of air handler, thoroughly inspect it for possible shipping damage. losely examine the air handler inside the carton if the carton is damaged. If damage is found, it should be noted on the carrier s freight bill. Damage claims should be filed with the carrier immediately. laims of shortages should be filed with the seller within days. NTE: If any damages are discovered and reported to the carrier, do not install the air handler because your claim may be denied. eturn Air Filters Each installation must include a return air filter. This filtering may be performed at the air handler or externally such as a return air filter grille. Air handlers mounted in the downflow orientation, including B series, require external filtering. A washable filter is available as an accessory. To ensure optimum performance, frequent filter cleaning is advised. WAHMV Filter Number Quantity equired 830 FIL 36-2 Horizontal Installations Horizontal installations can be left-hand or right-hand air supply. Adequate support must be provided to ensure cabinet integrity. Ensure that there is adequate room to remove, service and access panels if installing in the horizontal position. For the correct horizontal coil installation, see Installation onfiguration ptions later in this section. IMPTANT: This coil is provided with a secondary drain that should be trapped and piped to a location that will give the occupant a visual warning that the primary drain is clogged. See Install ondensate Drain. When an evaporator coil is installed in an attic or above a finished ceiling, an auxiliary drain pan should be provided under the air handler as specified by most local building codes. Suspended abinet Installation NTE: Air handlers cannot be installed horizontally lying on or suspended from either the front or back of the air handler. It must be positioned with one side parallel to the floor when in the horizontal position. The suspending means must be field fabricated, and should consist of 2 cradles made by attaching 2 rods to a length of angle iron or suitable gauge steel. See Installation onfiguration ptions. Upflow air discharge contains only drain pan. Upflow or horizontal airflow contains 2 drain pans. Vertical Installations Upflow The air handler must be supported on the bottom only and set on a field-supplied supporting frame with an air return opening. To avoid possible condensate blow off, the insulation retainers are to be laid into the evaporator coil pan as shown in the Evaporator oil Pan illustration. Evaporator oil Pan Drains A B A. Drain connections Downflow onversion onversion to downflow must be performed in an area that allows access to all sides prior to placing the air handler in its final location. To keep the evaporator coil pan from sweating, the DPI accessory insulation kit is to be used when performing this conversion. NTE: The DPI kit is not supplied with this product and is to be purchased separately. See the following chart for the correct DPI kit. WAHMV Model Insulation Kit To complete the conversion, slide the evaporator coil into the chassis and attach the 3 access panels. 7 NTE: When the air handler is converted to the downflow position, the coil may protrude above the cabinet on some models. Horizontal onversion The only field modification required for conversion to Horizontal ight-hand is the removal of the plastic knockouts in the horizontal panel drain connections. To keep the horizontal drain pan from sweating in high humidity applications, it is recommended that a DPIH insulation accessory kit be used. NTE: The DPIH insulation kit is not supplied with this product and should be purchased separately. See the following chart for the correct DPIH kit. WAHMV Model Insulation Kit 0. Install the J bracket removed in Step 2 to support the upflow pan to the tie channel.. Attach all panels and the metering device. WAHMV Motor rientation If the unit is in the upflow position, there is no need to rotate the motor. If the unit is in the downflow position, loosen the motor mount and rotate the motor as shown in the following illustration. heck that the motor is oriented with the female connections facing down on the casing. If the motor is not oriented with the connections down, water will collect in the motor and may cause premature failure. Primary drain. emove the 3 air handler access panels. 2. emove the J shaped bracket that retains the evaporator coil. 3. emove the flowrator from the lower left side access panel and slide out the evaporator coil and horizontal drain pan.. emove the gasket from the horizontal pan drain connections.. emove the oval shaped plastic plug from the left side access panel. 6. emove the oval shaped rubber gasket seal from the lower right side access panel. 7. The drain connections for the horizontal pan are sealed with a thin coating of plastic. Knock out this plastic seal with a screwdriver and hammer. NTE: The upper drain will become the secondary drain which is mandatory in many municipalities. 8. Install the plastic plug removed in Step to the right side lower access panel and the oval shaped rubber gasket to the lower left access panel. 9. einstall the evaporator coil with the horizontal panel on the left side. NTE: Push the assembly completely to the rear to ensure the engagement of the upflow pan with the rear channel bracket. A B Ensure that the Neoprene gasket with PSA remains intact on all surfaces that the access panels are secured to. These surfaces are the entire length of the wrapper and areas between the upper tie plate, upper and lower access panels. heck that the upper access panel breaker insert gasket is intact and that the flowrator gasket is installed on the lower access panel. An additional drain hole cover is required. Install ondensate Drain AUTIN If secondary drain is not installed, the secondary access must be plugged. Goodman 2 The air handler is provided with ³ ₄" (.9 cm) NPT condensate drain connections. A field-fabricated secondary drain pan, with a drainpipe to the outside of the building, is required in all installations over a finished living space or in any area that may be damaged by overflow from the main drain pan. In some localities, local codes may require a secondary drain pan for any horizontal installation. Make sure the air handler is level so that the drain pan will empty completely.. emove the appropriate drain knockouts. See Installation onfigurations. You may need to remove the indoor coil assembly from the cabinet. 2. emove any web from inside any threaded drain pan hole to which a drain line is to be connected. Gently remove the web so as not to damage the coil. 7

8 3. onnect the primary drain line connection to the primary drain pan connection. The primary drain connection is flush with the bottom of the inside of the pan. The secondary connection is raised above the bottom of the inside of the pan. NTE: When making drain fitting connections to the drain pan, hand tighten. Using a sealant is recommended. vertightening the fittings can split connections on the drain pan.. Secondary drain connections, if used, should be connected to a separate drainage system. un the secondary drain line to a place where the occupant would notice water coming from the secondary drain.. Install a 3" (7.6 cm) trap in both the primary and secondary drain lines as close to the unit as practical. Make sure the top of the trap is below the connection to the drain pan to allow complete drainage of the pan. NTE: Horizontal runs must also have an anti-siphon air vent (standpipe) installed ahead of the horizontal run. See Typical ondensate Drain onnection in this section. An extremely long horizontal run may require an oversized drain line to eliminate the trapping of air. Typical ondensate Drain onnection (Secondary Drain Not Shown) Install Ductwork IMPTANT: Install the ductwork in accordance with NFPA 90B Standard for the Installation of Warm Air Heating and Air-onditioning Sytems (latest edition) and any local codes. onnect the supply air duct to the flange on top of the unit. If an isolation connector is used, it must be nonflammable. A return air duct system is recommended. If the unit is installed in a confined space or closet, the entire duct cross sectional area must meet the minimum return air free area. Verify rifice Size. onsult the outdoor unit literature to determine whether the indoor unit has the correct orifice installed. 2. The condensate drain is on the negative pressure side of the blower; therefore, air being pulled through the condensate line will block positive drainage without a proper trap. 6. oute the drain line to the outside or to an appropriate drain. Drain lines must be installed so they do not block service access to the front of the air handler. A 2" (6 cm) clearance is required for filter, coil, or blower removal and service access. NTE: heck local codes before connecting the drain line to an existing drainage system. 7. Insulate the drain lines where sweating could cause water damage. Test ondensate Drain Pan and Drain Line After Installation:. Pour several quarts of water into the drain pan, enough to fill the drain trap and line. 2. heck that the drain pan is draining completely, no leaks are found in the drain line fittings, and water is draining from the end of the primary drain line. 3. orrect any leaks found. H F G 3. emove the orifice with an orifice extractor tool.. Insert the proper orifice into the fitting, seal end first. Make sure the orifice is free to move in the fitting.. eplace the brass hex nut. NTE: vertightening the brass hex nut will crush the gasket and may result in a system leak or stuck piston. 6. Dispose of/recycle all packaging and unused parts. onnect efrigerant Lines efrigerant lines must be connected by a licensed, EPA certified refrigerant technician in accordance with established procedures. IMPTANT: onnecting refrigerant lines must be clean, dehydrated, refrigerant-grade copper lines. Air handler coils should be installed only with specified line sizes for approved system combinations. Handle the refrigerant lines gently during the installation process. Sharp bends or possible kinking in the lines will cause a restriction. Do not remove the caps from the lines or system connection points until connections are ready to be completed. WANING Goodman This product is factory-shipped under pressure. Follow these instructions to prevent injury. 8

9 AUTIN To protect the unit when Goodman welding close to 3the painted surfaces, the use of a quenching cloth is strongly advised to prevent scorching or marring of the equipment finish. Solder with a minimum of % silver is recommended. Tubing Preparation All cut ends are to be round, burr free and clean. Failure to follow this practice increases the chances for refrigerant leaks. The suction line is spun closed and requires pipe cutters to remove the closed end. Post Brazing Quench all welded joints with water or a wet rag. Piping Size For the correct tubing size, follow the specification for the condenser/heat pump. Special Instructions This coil comes equipped with a check style flowrator for refrigerant management. For most installations with matching applications, no change to the flowrator piston is required. However, in mix-matched applications, a flowrator piston change may be required. See the piston kit chart or consult your local distributor for details regarding mix-matched piston sizing. If the mix-match application requires a different piston size, change the piston in the flowrator on the indoor coil before installing the coil and follow the procedure shown below. IMPTANT: Torch heat required to braze tubes of various sizes is proportional to the size of the tube. Tubes of smaller size require less heat to bring the tube to brazing temperature before adding brazing alloy. Applying too much heat to any tube can melt the tube. Service personnel must use the appropriate heat level for the size of the tube being brazed. NTE: The use of a heat shield when brazing is recommended to avoid burning the serial plate or the finish on the unit. Heat trap or wet rags should be used to avoid damage to heat sensitive components such as service valves and TXV valves.. Loosen the ¹³ ₁₆" nut one turn only to allow high pressure tracer gas to escape. No gas indicates a possible leak. 2. After the gas has escaped, remove the nut and discard the black or brass cap. 3. emove the check piston to verify it is correct and then replace the piston. See the piston kit chart in the instructions.. Use a tube cutter to remove the spin closure on the suction line.. emove the tailpiece clamped to the exterior and slide the ¹³ ₁₆" nut into place. 6. Braze the tailpiece to the line set liquid tube. 7. Insert the suction line into the connection. 8. Slide the insulation and the rubber grommet at least 8" (.7 cm) away from the braze joint. 9. Braze suction line. 0. After the tailpiece has cooled, confirm position of the white Teflon seal and hand tighten the ¹³ ₁₆" nut. AUTIN Goodman 8 Excessive torque can cause orifices to stick. Use the proper torque settings when tightening orifices.. Torque the ¹³ ₁₆" nut to 7 to 2 ft-lbs. or tighten one-sixth turn. 2. eplace the suction line, grommet and insulation. A B D A. Is the indoor coil orifice sized correct? Have all unused orifice replacement parts and packaging been disposed of/recycled? Is the filter clean, in place, and of adequate size? Is the wiring neat, correct, and in accordance with the wiring diagram? Is the air handler properly grounded and fused? Is the thermostat correctly wired and in a good location? Are all access panels in place and secure? heck Blower peration. Set the thermostat to FAN N. 2. The indoor blower should come on. heck Electric Heater (If Used). Set the thermostat to call for auxiliary heat (approximately F [-º] above ambient temperature). The indoor blower and auxiliary heat should come on together. Allow a minimum of 3 minutes for all sequencers to cycle on. 2. Set the thermostat so it does not call for heat. Allow up to minutes for all sequencers to cycle off. heck Airflow ooling Blower Speed For proper cooling operation, the airflow through the indoor coil should be between 30 and 0 FM per ton of cooling capacity (or 30 to 0 FM per 2,000 Btu/h) based on the rating of the outdoor unit. The cooling blower speed is factory-configured to provide the correct airflow for an outdoor unit that matches the maximum cooling capacity rating of the air handler. If the outdoor unit is smaller than the maximum cooling capacity rating for the air handler, the cooling blower speed may need to be changed. efer to the Blower Performance hart. IMPTANT: The cooling blower speed must be set to provide a minimum of 30 FM airflow per ton (,200 Btu/h) of outdoor cooling capacity. WAHMV Motor WANING HIGH VLTAGE! Disconnect Goodman ALL power 6 before servicing. Failure to do so may cause property damage, personal injury or death. This section references the operation characteristics of the WAHMV model motor only. The EM control board is factory-set with DIP Switch in the N position and all other DIP switches in the FF position. For most applications, this setting is to be changed according to the electric heat size and the outdoor unit selection. The WAHMV product uses a General Electric EM TM motor. This motor provides many features not available on the traditional PS motor. These features include: Improved Efficiency onstant FM Soft Start and Stop Improved Humidity ontrol Motor Speed Adjustment Each EM TM blower motor has been preprogrammed for operation at distinct airflow levels when operating in cooling, heat pump heating, backup heating (electric heating) and backup plus heat pump heating. Each mode has levels to deliver different airflow FM [L/s]. The adjustment is performed by changing the DIP switch(es) either to an FF or N position. 22

SEQUENE F PEATIN ooling ooling nly or Heat Pump When the thermostat calls for cooling, the circuit between and G is completed, and the blower relay is energized. The normally open contacts close, causing the indoor blower motor to operate. The circuit between and Y is also completed; this circuit closes the contactor in the outdoor unit starting the compressor and outdoor fan motor. ircuit and energizes the reversing valve, switching it to the cooling position. (The reversing valve remains energized as long as selector switch is in the L position.) Heating Electric Heat nly When the thermostat calls for heat, the circuit between and W is completed, and the heat sequencer relay is energized. A time delay follows before the heating elements and the indoor blower motor come on. Units with a second heat sequencer relay can be connected with the first sequencer to W on the thermostat subbase or connected to a second stage on the subbase. Heating Heat Pump When the thermostat calls for heat, the circuits between and Y and and G are completed. ircuit -Y energizes the contactor starting the outdoor fan motor and the compressor. ircuit and G energizes the blower relay starting the indoor blower motor. If the room temperature should continue to fall, the circuit between and W is completed by the 2 nd stage heat room thermostat. ircuit -W energizes a heat sequencer relay. The completed circuit will energize supplemental electric heat (if available). Units with a second heat sequencer relay can be connected with the first sequencer to W on the thermostat or connected to a second heating stage W 2 on the thermostat subbase. 23

Install new/clean filters with the arrows on the side pointing in the direction of airflow. Do not replace a cleanable (high velocity) filter with a disposable (low velocity) filter unless the return air system is properly sized for it.
