10 outfield fertilisers Marathon Marathon is the result of practically oriented agronomic knowledge, coupled with many years of experience in working with fertilisers and their interaction with plants. Long-term research by universities and sports institutes at home and abroad have laid the foundation for the Marathon range of products. Through Marathon Sport, Melspring have developed a fertiliser that delivers a denser sward with deeper, healthier rooting but without the need to drastically increase labour inputs. The Marathon range is characterised by a balance of nutrients, the analyses of each product being geared to a specific growth stage or season. The use of Marathon leads to a better sward with improved wear tolerance, brought about by steady, controlled growth. Effect on grass Gradual Uptake - Marathon fertilisers benefit from having both organic and mineral components bound together to ensure that the nitrogen is multi-stage released, so it is available for steady plant growth from the moment it is applied and for an extended period that can last for three or four months. Results release of nutrients from Marathon reduce the rootzone ph Common Practice Marathon Denser Turf - The result of following a Marathon programme is a sward with firm, shorter leaf blades brought about by the increase in tillering and improvement in leaf cell structure. Marathon nutrition increases the number of grass leaves per square metre and the turf will lose less of its mass through mowing, because the leaves tend to be short and stout rather than long and weak. The organic fraction of Marathon fertiliser is not immediately available to be taken up by the grass roots. It must first undergo a slow decomposition in the soil, which gives Marathon its extended release properties. Research has shown that the grass roots will interact in this process by making small changes in the ph of the soil immediately surrounding the root. This is a natural reaction between a plant and its rootzone, where small amounts of acidic compounds are excreted in response to nutritional need or hunger. These compounds increase the rate at which the organic fertiliser is broken down to release nutrients in a form that the roots can absorb. Such behaviour maximises food resources in the soil and helps prevent loss from leaching. Nitrate Leaching Clipping Yield marathon Product Pack Coverage Composition Formulation Application Rate Marathon is an extended release fertiliser range that provides long lasting balanced growth on golf fairways, tees, surrounds, sportsfields and ornamental lawns maintained at a height of 10mm and above. 13 NPK nutrient input calculations 11 How to calculate NPK nutrient input To plan accurate turf fertiliser input it is important to know how much actual nutrient is being applied in any given treatment and over the course of a season. This can be calculated in the following ways: Granular Fertilisers Formula Fertiliser analyses and inputs are expressed in elemental form for nitrogen (N), but in oxide form (P 2 O 5 and K 2 O) for phosphorous and potassium. To calculate actual elemental input: To convert P 2 O 5 to elemental P - Multiply by 0.44 To convert K 2 O to elemental K - Multiply by 0.83 This can be useful when considering other constituents of fertilisers. For example, many granular fertilisers contain high levels of sulphur (S) expressed in the oxide form (SO 3 ). To convert SO 3 to elemental S - multiply by 0.4. To calculate the Kg of nutrient applied per hectare use: Application rate (in g/m 2 ) x nutrient content / 10 Example: applied at 40 g/m 2 40 x 30 / 10 = 120 Kg of N per hectare 40 x 5 / 10 = 20 Kg of P 2 O 5 per hectare 2 O per hectare Water Soluble Fertilisers Formula Water Soluble fertilisers are treated as granular fertilisers. However, where application rates are in kg/ha, use the following formula: Application rate (in Kg/ha) x % nutrient content / 100 Example: applied at 50 Kg/ha 2 O per hectare Liquid Fertilisers Formula There are two different methods to calculate liquid fertiliser nutrient content. The % w/w calculation. (It is essential to know the specific gravity (SG) of the product to work out nutrient content). Application rate (in litres per hectare) x specific gravity of the liquid = W and then, W x % of nutrient content / 100 Example: An application of liquid fertiliser applied at O per hectare The g/l calculation. g/l x application rate (L/ha) / 1000 = nutrient input. Example: 80 L/ha (g/l 150) 150 x 80 = 12,000 / 1000 = 12 Kg of nitrogen per ha
14 12 liquid and soluble fertilisers Product Pack Composition Formulation Application Rate Evolution 2 Pro This range is based on advanced formulations that are able to rapidly penetrate the leaf and quickly alleviate deficiency symptoms. With superior efficacy, relatively low amounts of nutrients are required to achieve the same effects as unformulated products and the interval between repeat sprays can be extended. Long term storage stability is achieved as Evolution 2 Pro liquid fertilisers are manufactured using a specifically selected high grade of inorganic salts that are very low in impurities. Once added to the spray tank Evolution 2 Pro liquid fertilisers are 100% soluble in water. Components within the formulations not only help with mixing and compatibility, but also nutrient uptake. Carefully chosen surfactants reduce the surface tension of the spray droplets, allowing for optimum spread and contact with the leaf surface whilst at the same time giving a degree of rainfastness. The spreading action of the surfactants contained in the Evolution 2 Pro liquid E 2 Nutrition Evolved Sherriff Amenity s Evolution 2 Pro High Performance Liquid Fertilisers fertiliser range allows uptake through the cuticle of the leaf and does not limit penetration of the stomata. Evolution 2 Pro Slow Release Liquid Fertiliser Pro-Long N slow release nitrogen liquid fertiliser comprises short and long chain polymers of methylene urea. 16 14 42 Algae Green What is the Algae Green Range? Organic Nutritional Liquid Alginate Algae Green is a unique, cold process seaweed liquid extract produced from fresh, hand picked Ascophyllum nodosum. The seaweed is collected from the sheltered bays and unpolluted waters of the Atlantic Ocean around the north west coast of Ireland. Due to the cold extraction process, Algae Green is high in micronutrients, plant hormones and alginates, all of which are found naturally in Ascophyllum nodosum. Ascophyllum nodosum (knotted wrack) is a brown macro-algae growing between the low and mid-inter tidal zone in the North Atlantic Ocean. The West coast of Ireland and particularly the Donegal coast, rich in rocky sheltered areas, presents a pure and abundant source of Ascophyllum nodosum. This species is traditionally hand harvested by local cutters using careful rotation and selection of cutting areas to allow sustainable management of the stocks. Nematode Research 'Within the European turf grass industry, an increase in nematode damage has led to the use of a range of techniques to reduce both nematode numbers and turf symptoms. The use of cold process seaweed extracts has been particularly effective in alleviating stress and reducing visible nematode symptoms. Our trials have shown that applications of Algae Green (SeaVolution) can enhance root mass and turf colour in the presence of both endoparasitic and ectoparasitic nematodes. This can provide Turf Managers with an effective and environmental approach to nematode management across a range of golf course types, from traditional links to modern USGA parkland constructions'. Dr Colin Fleming, Queens University, Belfast

Product Pack Coverage Formulation Application Rate GoGreen Classic GoGreen Classic is a versatile, convenient formulation of complexed iron that will give extended green-up to turf, whilst correcting iron deficiency and hardening against the onset of disease. The unique complex regulates the release of iron over a longer period to give a sustained effect without the blackening some irons can cause. A trace element package and supplemented magnesium in the product work together with a small amount of nitrogen to improve the health and appearance of the turf but without stimulating rapid growth. A surfactant system, unique to the GoGreen liquid range, speeds the uptake of iron into the leaf and, for a short period after application, helps to disperse dew formation at times of high humidity. GoGreen Classic 5 L m 2 Liquid L/ha GoGreen Plus GoGreen Plus has a similar formulation to GoGreen Classic but with the addition of potassium to give a greater hardening effect on grass through autumn, winter and spring. Potassium plays an important role in strengthening the cell walls in the leaf Improved control of Fusarium Patch Curative Fungicide Strategy Chipco Green & Go Green Plus - Perfect Partners Fusarium Patch Fungicide Packages 6 Fusarium 6 The ability of iron tonics to discourage the spread of low levels of Fusarium Patch has and trace elements is particularly useful in this respect. With this in mind, a series of trials with the STRI and other independent research organisations to evaluate the benefits of tank-mixing GoGreen Plus with various fungicides. As a result of this work we are able to recommend several tank-mixes that give dramatic improvements in the level and duration of control of heavy levels of Fusarium Patch. Fusarium Patch (Microdochium nivale) is the most common and widespread disease in managed amenity turf in the UK. It can be exceptionally damaging to grass species, causing unsightly scarring of the sward and reducing the aesthetic appearance of the playing surface. Fusarium Patch affects over 98% of golf courses and bowling greens. When the disease is very active or when grass growth is slow or at a stand still, it is essential that immediate steps are taken to control the outbreak by careful use of an appropriate fungicide. Tank Mixing Mixing two or more products in the spray tank may be carried out to reduce the potential for disease resistance development. Certain tank mixes can also improve the quality of the turf and reduce the the time taken for the turf to recover from disease attack. Fungicides are selected with different modes of action so that the resulting mixture will attack the target disease on pathogen to develop resistance to the treatment. We strongly recommend the addition of an appropriate adjuvant to all fungicide treatments. Independent STRI Trials GoGreen Plus increases the performance of Chipco Green Our trials at the S.T.R.I. have proved that by tank-mixing Go Green Plus with Chipco Green, disease control was noticeably improved. 21 soil and plant conditioners Product Pack Coverage Composition Formulation Application Rate GoGreen Granules A mini granular slow release iron that provides a steady greening and hardening effect on close mown turf such as golf and bowling greens over a four month period. The hub of the formulation is a very pure form of iron pyrites that imparts the release control mechanism to the iron giving a single application of the product an effect that lasts for up to 4 months. A useful amount of potassium (10%) hardens the grass by strengthening the cell walls and augments a trace of naturally occurring nitrogen and 8.7% slow release iron to give a product that improves the health and appearance of turf without the blackening caused by some iron treatments. With an overall analysis of % Fe, the product will easily fit into most turf nutritional programmes and can be applied at any time of year without the need to irrigate after spreading. 26 42 Disease Control Background Independent research organisations such as the STRI and with chemical manufacturers, have carried out extensive trials on the efficacy and compatibility of fungicide tank-mixes. This work was commissioned in order to provide new and innovative solutions to the turf disease problems experienced by our customers. Tank-mixing Mixing two or more products in the spray tank can be carried out to reduce the potential for disease resistance development. Certain tank-mixes can also improve the quality of the turf and reduce the time taken for the turf to recover from disease attack. Fungicides are selected with different modes of action so that the resulting mixture will attack the target disease on two or more fronts. This makes it more difficult for the pathogen to develop resistance to the treatment.
27 disease identification guide 25 Fusarium Patch / Pink Snow Mould (Microdochium nivale) [formerly Fusarium nivale] as the disease progresses. Active patches on turf have a distinctive ginger appearance and, when viewed early in the morning, creamy white mycelium resembling cotton wool can be seen in the centre and towards the outer edge of the patch. Grass in the active patches is is sufficient grass growth to fill in. The scars have a pale straw coloured appearance and are drier to the touch with no evidence of mycelium. The disease can often become very active under a covering of snow. As the snow melts the large disease patches (sometimes 25-50cm across) have a bright ginger ring surrounding a pale pink/straw coloured centre. This form of the disease is known as Pink Snow Mould. Red Thread / Pink Patch (Laetisaria fuciformis and Limonomyces roseipellis) [formerly classified as a single species: Corticium fuciforme] Symptoms: Ill defined patched of bleached grass. Pink mycelium is often visible in early morning dew. Close examination with the naked eye will often reveal red needle-like structures, which are attached to the leaf blades. The needles become brittle upon drying and are easily detached allowing fragments to spread the disease. The disease rarely kills the grass plant. singly but are more frequently found together: Laetisaria fuciformis - can be isolated from the red needles. Limonomyces roseipellis - forms the pink mycelium. Dollar Spot (Sclerotinia homoeocarpa) larger than this. The patches are distinct and circular but can sometimes join together forming larger spots. The diseased grass is usually dry. Close examination of individual grasses near the outer edges of the patch often reveals a dark margin separating the dead straw coloured tissue from the green grass. Anthracnose (Colletotrichum graminicola) Symptoms. Recent research has identified two significant stages of the disease; a foliar blight that can spread rapidly during the mid-summer months causing considerable discolouration of affected plants. Leaves of individual grass plants turn yellow, with the youngest leaves on each plant appearing red or orange. Under conditions of high moisture during the autumn and spring, the second stage of the disease can occur when the plant rots at the base and is easy to pull from the turf. Examination of the rotting base of the plant shows extensive dark staining and sometimes black reproductive structures can just be seen with the naked eye. (Known as acervuli, these spore bearing structures are little more than the size of a pin head). Fairy Rings - A large number of different fungi are known to cause fairy rings in turf. Fairy Rings are classified into 3 groups. Type 1 is the most damaging. Type 1 eg. Marasmius oreades Symptoms. A ring of dead grass may be seen within a wider ring of stimulated dark green grass. Fruiting bodies are often seen within the dead area and the outer stimulated area. Marasmius oreades is the most common type 1 fairy ring and produces small tan coloured toadstools. The fairy ring fungus can be found some 5 cm below the surface of the grass and can extend to a depth of 30 to 50 cm deep in well established rings. The fungus consumes organic matter in the soil and excretes a waxy substance which has the effect of inhibiting water movement in the immediate vicinity of the fungal hyphae. The type 1 fairy ring fungus the toxic waste excreted into the soil kills the grass in the area above the fungus.

48 46 advisory reports Advisory Reports Our advisory report service is designed to give turf professionals essential information on the nutrient requirements needed for the provision and maintenance of high quality turf. Advisory Report With reference to the soil samples collected for chemical analysis and the enclosed results, I am able to offer the following comments and recommendations. The ph of the sample tested was 6.2 and therefore slightly above the Soil samples, analysed by independent laboratories, provide us with the data to compile a comprehensive report on the current nutrient status of the customer s turf. The detail of the analysis is tailored to customer requirements ents and can include all of the macro and micronutrients, soil structure, ph and nutrient retention capability. We can also carry out leaf tissue analysis and test the water used in irrigation, if required. Data from the analysis is compared with guideline figures to identify the scale of any remedial measures and is presented in helpful graphics in the report. Recommendations, based on the specific requirements of the customer, take the form of a suggested programme that is illustrated in tabular and calendar format. It will show the number of units of each product required, with the application details and the annual total nutrient input provided by the programme. We can also provide other maintenance programmes such as wetting agent, weed, pest and disease control. optimum (5.5) for the cultivation of fine turf grass. However the result should not be considered a major concern as the result can usually be modified by the application of appropriate fertiliser. The organic matter content was at an acceptable level and can usually be maintained by ongoing cultural practices. The cation exchange capacity (CEC) was normal and this will help the green to retain nutrient against leeching. The use of an organic fertiliser can help to boost cec. The magnesium level was slightly low to normal and as it is usually present in many fertilisers and topdressing no further action is advised. The iron level was normal to slightly high but not at a point it would cause problems on the green. Indeed I feel the green would continue to benefit from applications of iron (see recommendations) to help reduce ph. improve colour, winter hardening, disease control, etc. The sulphur content was slightly low and again inputs are usually achieved from fertilisers that contain this nutrient. The phosphate level was normal but as the result is not necessarily a reflection of availability a small input of this nutrient has been considered in the fertiliser programme. Potassium levels were slightly low and it is considered the green would benefit from higher inputs of this nutrient over the next 12 months. The fertiliser programme includes an organic product to help boost CEC and this should be followed by Floranid Eagle 20:0:18. The later is a long lasting spring early summer product that can be used prior to the start of the season to avoid the granules becoming an issue to bowlers. During the summer a liquid mix is advised to provide added colour and recovery growth. The liquid rate is calculated not to give excessive top growth that can make the green slow. Mix in the order K-Max, N-Sure, Go Green. In the autumn Go Green Granular will act to harden the turf prior to winter conditions. A second application should be made approximately around the start of the new year. The poor colour the green has experienced is usually a symptom of not enough fertiliser input and or excessive leeching. The later has been a particular problem this year due to high rainfall. To help boost nutrient retention further it would be appropriate to add a soil conditioner such as Farmura Farmgran or Matrix from Melspring. Apply after tinning as part of early spring renovation. sample Sep Oct Aug Nov Jul Dec Jun Jan Feb May Mar Apr Fungicide Strategies Our fungicide control strategies are the result of extensive trials carried out at the STRI and other independent research organisations. They provide innovative solutions to both curative and preventative disease control throughout the year.
49 voluntary initiative and LERAP 47 environmental impact of pesticides. The Amenity Sector needs to pay particular attention to the standards of application and advice in order to safeguard the environment. The main problem is the presence of pesticide residues in water, caused by some uses of pesticides in the amenity sector, particularly herbicides on hard surfaces. Pesticide levels in drinking water must meet the European Drinking Water standards. It only takes a tiny amount of pesticide residue to breach the drinking water standard and cause problems for water companies, so we must be very careful with every drop and every drip. Continuing problems could lead to important actives being withdrawn or severely restricted in their use. Planning and prevention are the key steps: 1. Make a full assessment to ensure that the right product is used at the right time in the right place. 2. Prevent pesticides reaching water sources in the first place by following best practice during storage, transport, application, disposal and clean-up operations. Review practices in all the stages of pesticide application: Storage Clean Up Transport Disposal Application Emergency Check practice against advice from your qualified adviser and the Code of Practice. Follow best practice at all times. An excellent starting point is the web site which has news, advisory guides, product information and links to other sites for specific information. LERAP LERAP stands for Local Environment Risk Assessment for Pesticides and applies to ALL boom spraying operations, whether agricultural or amenity, near water or potential water carrying dips and ditches (even dry). All products are graded under the LERAP scheme and all the information is in the statutory box on the label. The categories are: A = 5 metre buffer zone required - NOT ELIGIBLE FOR REDUCTION B = 5 metre buffer zone required but can be reduced with LERAP measures C or No LERAP = No buffer zone required LERAP A LERAP B Broadcast Air Assisted LERAP Why buffer zones and LERAP are important to your spray operation Buffer zones next to watercourses are intended to give additional protection to aquatic life. A label requirement for a 5m buffer zone next to a watercourse indicates a product poses a particular risk to aquatic plants and/or animals. LERAP offers practical benefits as it may allow a reduction in the width of the watercourse buffer zone while still ensuring the environment is adequately protected. Before you begin spraying near water you must know if the product requires a watercourse buffer zone and also what the width should be. The continued availability of some familiar products may depend on you fully complying with their watercourse buffer zones. By ensuring you are correctly complying you will be helping to safeguard your future livelihood and help maintain a healthy environment.
