6. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS Persons operating the rangefinder must be instructed on safety procedures and be capable of providing the first medical aid related to laser emission. Laser emission hazard The rangefinder emits pulses of invisible laser light at wavelength of 1.06 μm, characterized by the following possible hazards: direct laser radiation; laser radiation reflected from mirror-like objects; diffused reflected laser radiation. Direct and mirror-reflected laser radiation of the rangefinder is dangerous for the naked eye at a distance of 2000 m and less. Cars, building windows, water have mirror-like surfaces. Diffused reflected laser radiation is dangerous at 0.43 m distance from reflecting surface. Optical devices increase hazardous distances proportionally to their magnification ratios. Laser energy at the output objective lens of the rangefinder exceeds safe level for skin by 16% and reaches safe level at a distance of 3.77 m. NEVER: - Turn on the rangefinder while potentially aiming at people or animals; - Measure distance through glass (including windows or doors); - Measure distance to mirror-reflecting surfaces which are closer than 2000 m (this includes, but is not limited to mirrors, car and building windows, optical components, other polished surfaces); - Direct radiation to diffuse-reflecting surfaces (walls, curtains, paper), which are closer than 0.43 m to the rangefinder; Persons in dangerous zone of laser radiation must wear protective goggles for eye protection. 13

When the System is not in operation cover the objective lens with the cap. High voltage hazard The rangefinder generates life-hazardous high voltage during operation. NEVER disassemble the rangefinder yourself! Repair the rangefinder only in an authorized facility. 14

7. PREPARATION TO OPERATION Check battery voltage To inspect battery voltage, set the power switch 10 (Fig. 6) to ON and check the Low Battery indicator in the indicator eyepiece 7 (Fig. 6). If battery voltage falls below 11V the LED turns red. In this case set power switch 10 (Fig. 6) to OFF and replace the battery. Check the rangefinder functioning Aim the rangefinder at target located at known distance; Set the power switch 10 (Fig. 6) to ON; Press and release the MEASURE 1 button 2 (Fig. 6); When the readiness indicator turns on, release the MEASURE 1 button and read the range; Compare the range measurement result with the actual distance. The rangefinder is in good working order if the range measurement is accurate to 5 m. When target with known distance is not available, range the same target three times. If the measurements differ by less than 5 m the rangefinder functions properly. Align the angular mount Set up the rangefinder To use the AM and tripod for observation, proceed as follows: - Arrange the tripod so that one leg aligns with the ranging direction; - Extend the telescopic legs to the desired length. In case you do not use the tripod: - Unscrew the ball-mount seat from the tripod base; - Fit the stay block on to a stable object and tighten it. - Install and level AM by turning it in spherical joint, aim to bring elevation and cross level 11 (Fig. 6) to the centre of the circle mark. 15

- Secure AM by the clamp. - Sliding the rangefinder along the AM bracket guides, fit the AM clamp into the T-shaped opening in the rangefinder bracket, and turn the bracket lock lever 2 (Fig. 6) to lock the rangefinder. Align the rangefinder with base line To align rangefinder to a base line: - Aim the rangefinder at the base point; - Unlock azimuth dial by turning azimuth dial lock knob 10 (Fig. 6); - Align zeros on azimuth dial and on a scale visible through the magnifier lens 10 (Fig.4) by rotating the azimuth dial 12 (Fig. 6); rotate the azimuth dial by the dial itself, not by handle; - Lock the azimuth dial by turning azimuth dial lock knob 10 (Fig. 6). Now all the azimuth measurements will be relative to the base line with 5 mills accuracy. If base point is not available direction to magnetic north or magnetic south can be used as a base line: - Turn compass release lever 14 (Fig. 6) clockwise until it stands against the cut underneath it; - Unlock compass needle by turning compass lock knob 13 (Fig. 6) clockwise; - Align compass needle and the mark on the compass dial (use front dial marked N for aligning to North and rear dial marked S for aligning to South) by turning the rangefinder (rotate Azimuth adjustment knob 1 (Fig. 6) to do so); - Release azimuth dial lock by rotating knob 11 (Fig. 6); - If magnetic declination is unknown align zero on azimuth dial 12 (Fig. 6) and zero on a bottom scale visible through the magnifier lens 10 (Fig.4) by rotating the azimuth dial 14 (Fig. 6); rotate the azimuth dial by the dial itself, not by the azimuth adjustment knob; - If magnetic declination is known align zero on the bottom scale visible through the magnifier lens 10 (Fig. 6) with the magnetic declination value in the azimuth dial 12 (Fig. 6); 16

- Lock the azimuth dial by rotating compass lock knob 13 (Fig. 6) counter clockwise. While using compass keep steel or iron objects away the rangefinder, as they may affect compass accuracy. A motor vehicle or a similar massive object must be at least 10 meters away, medium-size objects (hammers, pliers, similar tools) - at least 0.5 m away, and small objects (flashlights, knife, screwdriver, etc.) - 20 cm away. Check zero elevation reference ER 0 ER "0" is the setting of the elevation scale that corresponds to the horizontal position of the rangefinder. To check the zero elevation reference, proceed as follows: - Stick a pole at 50 to 100 m away from the unit and mark it with the rangefinder objective height above the ground level; - Aim the reticle at the mark and read the elevation angle (A1); - swap the rangefinder and the pole positions, and apply another mark to the pole in accordance with the new height of the rangefinder objective; - Aim the crosshair to the new mark of the pole and read again the tilt angle (A2); - find the ER "0" from the formula: A1 + A2 ER "0" = 2 The A1 and A2 values are entered with their respective signs. If the ER "0" value is other than zero, the respective correction is to be taken into account while operating the rangefinder. The error value is subtracted from the elevation measurement, if the latter is positive, and added, if it is negative. When the rangefinder is set up at a new observation point it is necessary to determine the elevation of its horizontal optical axis. To do so, - aim the reticle at an object with known elevation over the horizon E1. 17

- Read the number E2 at the right scale against the zero of the left scale. - Calculate Elevation correction ER = E1 E2 Subtract elevation correction from to all your measurements from this observation point and this rangefinder setting. If the rangefinder is moved even within the same observation point determine new elevation correction. Check the AM compass Set up the AM for operation. Check the sensitivity and balance of the compass needle: - Level the AM: o Release the spherical joint of the AM o Bring air bubble to the inner circle of the elevation and cross level 11 (Fig. 6) by tilting the rangefinder; o Tighten the spherical joint. - Release the needle: o Turn compass release lever 14 (Fig. 6) clockwise until it stands against the cut underneath it, o Release compass needle by turning compass release knob 13 (Fig. 6) clockwise; - Unbalance the needle by bringing a metal object (knife, screwdriver or similar) close to the compass, observe the needle move towards the object, and then move the object away. - Check: o The needle balances in a smooth and uniform manner; o When the needle settles its end comes to the same mark; o Needle ends are on a level with the marked plates within ± 0.5 mm at both N and S sides of the compass. If any check fails the AM must be repaired. 18

8. OPERATING PROCEDURE Distance measurement To measure distance to an object: - Set the power switch 10 (Fig. 6) to ON position; - Aim the rangefinder so that the target is observed in the central gap of the reticle as close as possible to its centre, and the screening objects (bushes, trees, terrain elevations, etc.), which are located near the target or partially mask it, are outside the gap. Locate the target in the lower portion of the gap, touching the bottom mark of the reticle; - Press MEASURE 1 button 2 (Fig. 6), wait until the readiness indicator comes on and release it; - Read the measured range. It will be displayed on the range indicator for 3-5 seconds. If rangefinder detects more than one target on the laser beam path (for example, a wire in front of a building), decimal point will be displayed in the last decade of the range indicator. To range the desired target measure distance to the first or the last target by pressing the MEASURE 1 or MEASURE L button respectively. If possible, repeat the target ranging once or twice. If the obtained range is correct, the results will not differ by more than 5 m. Azimuth measurement To take azimuth and magnetic azimuth measurements, proceed as follows: - Align the vertical mark of the reticle with the right side of the object; - Read azimuth from the azimuth dial 12 through the azimuth magnifier lens 9 (Fig. 6); - Align the vertical mark of the reticle with the left object and read azimuth again; - Determine the horizontal angle of the object by subtracting the smaller reading from the bigger one. 19

When measuring magnetic azimuth remember to add magnetic declination to the reading. Note: For higher precision take several angle measurements and calculate the average value. After each measurement re-aim the rangefinder. To measure elevation angles, proceed as follows: - Align the horizontal mark of the rangefinder reticle with the upper edge of the object; - Read the elevation scale 4 through elevation scale magnifier lens 6 (Fig. 6); - Rotate the elevation knob to align the horizontal mark of the reticle with the lower edge of the object and read elevation again; - Determine vertical angle of the object by subtracting the smaller value from the greater one if both have the same sign (are of the same color on the elevation scale), or by adding them, if the signs are opposite. The elevation is measured with reference to the current horizontal optical axis of the rangefinder. Absolute elevation may be obtained by adding elevation correction. Polar and rectangular coordinates Determine polar coordinates: - Align rangefinder on the angular mount as described in 7.3; - Aim the rangefinder at the object; - Measure azimuth of the object as described in 8.2; - Range the object as directed in 8.1. To convert polar coordinates into rectangular coordinates: - Take out the coordinate converter from the case; - Release the clamp and detach the ruler from the reverse side of the plotting board; - Determine the polar coordinates of the base point and the target and write them down on the plotting board or a special card; 20

- Read the magnetic declination of the area ΔA m from the map; - Using magnetic azimuth A m of the base point and the target and magnetic declination find their directional angles: α = A m ΔA m - Write down the directional angles of the base point and the target on the plotting board or card; - Mark numbers of the plotting board with respect to the selected scale (1:25,000 or 1:50,000) and the reference point, observation post and target location; - Read the rectangular coordinates of the base point from the map and write them down on the plotting board or card; - Align the circular scale zero of the plotting board with the zero wheel; - Plot the base point on the circular scale of the plotting board in accordance with the rectangular coordinates; - Read the directional angle of the base point from the circular scale; - Draw a vertical line through the base point on the circular scale. See that the line is parallel to the grid lines; - Use the rule to lay off the observation point-to-base point range on the drawn line. Mark the obtained observation point location point on the circular scale; - Adjust the circular scale to read the directional angle of the target; - Draw a vertical line through the observation point parallel to the grid lines on the circular scale; - Use the ruler to lay off the observation point-to-target range on the drawn line. Mark the target location with a dot and symbol; - Setting the circular scale to zero, read the target and observation point rectangular coordinates from the board. Write down the coordinates on the board or card; Plot the target on the map using the obtained rectangular coordinates. 21

Operation in adverse light conditions When using the rangefinder in insufficient light, set the illuminator switch 5 (Fig. 6) to ON. If a target is located against an intense background (bright sky, sun lit snow or sand, etc.), the rangefinder may confuse it with target and measurements may be inconsistent or rangefinder may detect more than one target. To compensate for the bright background attach diaphragm 22 (Fig. 2) to the objective lens and secure it on the case with a pin and a rubber clamp. Do not use the diaphragm at low temperature, in mist and limited visibility conditions. 22

9. RECHARGEABLE BATTERY HANDLING The rechargeable battery is supplied in discharged. While handling the battery, avoid contact with any bare circuit components and strictly comply with the prescribed charging/discharging procedure. NEVER: - Disassemble the battery; - Store the battery nearby the acids or batteries using acids. Charge the battery at ambient temperature of C. Standard charge: - Unscrew the battery cover on the charger; - Place the battery into the charger with "+" contact to the bottom, and screw the cover; - Connect the charger to the power source. - Place the charger switches to CHARGE and MAIN. The battery that was stored discharged for up to 28 days is to be charged for 15 hours. If the battery was stored discharged for a period between 28 days and 3 months, it should be cycled as follows: - Charge as described in Standard charge - Discharge the battery by setting the switches to the DISCHARGE and MAIN positions until the DISCHARGED light diode starts flashing. - Charge as described in Standard charge The battery that was stored discharged for over 3 months perform two charging cycles prior to use. 23

Cycle 1 - Charge for 24 hours with the charger switches set to the CHARGE and PREPARATORY; - Discharging the battery by setting the charger switches to DISCHARGE and PREPARATORY positions, until the LED labelled DISCHARGED starts flashing. Cycle 2 - Charge as described in Standard charge - Discharge the battery by setting the switches to the DISCHARGE and MAIN positions until the DISCHARGED light diode starts flashing. - Note the discharging time of Cycle 2 and charge the battery according to it: o If the discharging time is over 5 hours perform the Standard charge as described above, o If the discharging time is hours, subject the battery to another Cycle 2, then perform the Standard charge as described above, o If the discharging time is under 3.5 hours battery can not be used. 24
