High quality research environment In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, 88 per cent of our Economics department s research, and 78 per cent of our research in Business and Management was classified as either world-leading or internationally excellent, ranking the University of Bristol among the UK s top research institutions for these disciplines. Learning, assessment and contact hours All School of Economics, Finance and Management postgraduate taught Masters programmes use a range of teaching methods. They include lectures, exercise lectures, workshops and classes. Our priority is to encourage and support a cooperative learning environment where both theory and practice are important. Small interactive tutorial classes typically of 15 students, with seminars that focus on practical exercises, group work and presentations. Excellent in-house facilities with dedicated MSc student areas, including computer labs with 24-hour access to printer facilities and free annual printing credits provided. A dedicated personal tutoring team to support students for the duration of their studies in Bristol. Part of the Russell Group top UK universities We listen to students through feedback questionnaires, the online suggestions box, and through consultation with our elected MSc student representatives. Free bespoke English language support for international students during their MSc studies. Interdisciplinary approach We offer programmes in the areas of economics, accounting, finance and management, with the opportunity to study units from across the range of disciplines from within the School. Tatsinee Thanapatpaiboon (MSc Finance and Investment) I chose the University of Bristol because it is one of the well-known universities and the city is lovely. There are many intelligent students from all over the world here, the modules are very interesting and useful, and there are many good optional choices available. Study in this highly reputable university has helped my profile to be outstanding, not only from the knowledge I gained from the course, but the way the programme taught me to be self-motivated. We offer a range of MSc programmes, each with distinctive characteristics. The programmes have varying combinations of economics, accounting, finance and management. Giordano Goggioli (MSc Management) I chose to study Management as I wanted to strengthen my undergraduate degree with a Masters that enabled me to deepen and vary my business knowledge. The course was extremely interesting, characterised by classes which not only augmented my understanding of business topics, but also developed solid critical thinking capabilities. In five years time I would like to see myself occupying a managerial position in a multinational company, or running my own business. 4 Staff profile Dr Humphrey Bourne Senior Lecturer in Management, and Director of Graduate Studies Career prospects What are your favourite things about Bristol? Bristol was the first university in the UK to appoint a woman to the academic staff and has always been a supporter and promoter of diversity. I think that is hugely important. The University is located in the heart of the most attractive city in England, and has a reputation that is known throughout the world. That combination makes it a great university that I feel privileged to work for. From talking to our students we know that a major reason for applying to one of our Masters programmes is to improve employability and prepare for a successful career in the finance or business sector. We are proud that the University of Bristol is currently the seventh most targeted University by top employers, (The Graduate Market High Fliers Research Ltd). Former students career destinations What is your role within the School? I am Director of Graduate Studies, a role I have had since I chair various committees and the exam board and I deal with issues that arise during student progression through degree programmes. My principal area of research is on organisational values and I currently have several projects in progress exploring different aspects. Each year a small number of MSc students do dissertation projects on organisational values and I invariably learn something from their work, which I find very satisfying. What are your tips for university success? Read, read and keep reading. It is absolutely clear to me that the students who do best on the MSc programmes we offer are those that spend more times studying books and journal articles so that they build depth and breadth to the knowledge they gain in lectures and classes. At the end of the year when students are asked what, if they had their time again, would they do differently? The most common answer is I would read more.
