This course will include an in-depth review of previously learned concepts and allow students to further their skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening in German. Students will be exposed to a variety of literary selections including fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. Through literature students will glean cultural nuances, integrate newly acquired grammar, and improve their reading skills. The course is conducted exclusively in German, in order to develop the highest level of fluency for students.

AP German Language Syllabus 2 Primary Course Materials: The following list shows the primary course materials. Students will also work with other literary pieces, workbooks, listening activities, current event articles, musical lyrics, and films as appropriate and relevant to their studies. AP Released Exam items will be used to prepare students for the AP German Language Exam. Moeller, J., Adolph, W., Mabee, B., & Berger, S. (2007). Kaleidoskop: Kultur, Literatur und Grammatik (7 th ed.) [Kaleidoscope: Culture, Literature, and Grammar]. Boston, MA: Houghton Mifflin Company. Rankin, J, & Wells, L. (2003). Handbuch zur deutschen Grammatik: Wiederholen und anwenden (4 th ed.) [Handbook of German Grammar: Review and Application]. Boston, MA: Houghton Mifflin Company. First Semester Pacing: First Quarter Weeks 1, 2, and 3 Students will receive their course outline, textbooks, and information about the AP exam. Then, they will read a short piece by Peter Bichsel: Ein Tisch ist ein Tisch (Moeller et al., 1973). This fascinating little piece addresses the importance of language usage in order to communicate and share life with others. After reading the text, students will respond to questions and complete a series of connected grammar activities, using past tense. Maintaining the flow of the course, students will move into Kaleidoskop (Moeller et al., 2007). They will work more extensively with verbs in Chapters 2 and 3 of Kaleidoskop (Moeller et al., 2007), and Chapter 7 of Handbuch zur deutschen Grammatik (Rankin & Wells, 2004). They will focus more on the accurate use of past tense verbs. In conjunction with text readings and activities, students will complete workbook assignments, utilize listening activities in the language lab, and take a test over the material covered. Week 4 Students will continue their review of verbs. After reviewing the use of verbs, students will work more with language and communication. Theme 2 of Kaleidoskop (Moeller et al., 2007) extensively covers information about forms of communication and tools for communication. Students will discuss what forms of communication are available and appropriate ways to communicate. They will write essays about the advantages and disadvantages of cell phones, television, and . They will conclude their work with a roll play that they write and share with the class.

AP German Language Syllabus 3 Weeks 5 During week four, students will work exclusively with information about the reunification of Germany and its impact on the German people. Students will begin in Thema 3 of Kaleidoskop (Moeller et al., 2007). The readings cover everything from the fall of the Berlin wall to schools in Munich. Week 6, 7, and 8 Upon completing the theme in Kaleidoskop (Moeller et al., 2007), students will read and work with Olli aus Ossiland (Poesner, 1997). The short novel tells the story of a 15-year-old boy named Olli who lives in East Germany just before the fall of the Berlin Wall and the unification of Germany. The unification brings about dramatic changes for Olli, his friends, and the people of Hohenroda, Germany. It is a true story about becoming an adult and the challenges, opportunities, and dangers of adjusting to a new society and, in many ways, to a new world. Students will journal their thoughts, partake in dialogue about the text, and work with reading strategies, in an effort to increase their confidence with a larger piece of German text. Week 9 Following their readings, students will return to their review of grammar. Students will work in Chapters 4 and 5 of Kaleidoskop (Moeller et al., 2007) and chapter 4 of Handbuch zur deutschen Grammatik (Rankin & Wells, 2004). Their goal is to review the use of nominative, accusative and dative cases. In conjunction with this review, their will be opportunities to work with listening and partner activities in the language laboratory. They will conclude their work with a test. Second Quarter Week 1 Students will finish their work in chapters 4 and 5 of Kaleidoskop (Moeller et al., 2007) and chapter 4 of Handbuch zur deutschen Grammatik (Rankin & Wells, 2004). Their work will be evaluated with a test. Weeks 2, 3, and 4 To start the second quarter, students will do more extensive work with family life in Germany. They will work with Kaleidoskop s (Moeller et al., 2007) Thema 4. While working here, students will be given opportunities to work with picture sequences and write journals about their own family experiences and what they hope for in the future. They will create and present PowerPoint projects that highlight points from their journals. In addition to discussing familial structures in Germany, students will read Die sieben Raben and Aschenputtel by the Grimm brothers. With these two texts, they will utilize a variety of reading strategies, such as Talking-To-The-Text, note

AP German Language Syllabus 4 taking, and cloze exercises, in order to maximize their comprehension and increase their vocabulary. Weeks 5, 6, and 7 Staying with the theme of classical German children s literature, students will read pieces of Max and Moritz (Meier, ed., 1987) and Struwwelpeter (Hoffmann, 1845). To work with these pieces, students will use previously learned reading strategies. They will also do jigsaws exercises and a Gallery Walk. Week 8 and 9 Moving away from readings, students will cover Thema 5 of Kaleidoskop. (Moeller et al., 2007). This theme is a lot of fun. Students work with genres of music including classical, rap and rock. They will be exposed to the work of Clara Schumann, Xavier Naidoo, and Die Fantastischen Vier. They will both listen to the music and read associated lyrics in German. To conclude this lesson, students will write and perform their own raps in German. Week 10 To wrap up their work with music, students will watch a film. They will watch Die Comedian Harmonists (Vilsmaier, 1997), which tells the story of an accapella group in Germany prior to and during World War II. Students will prepare for the mid-term exam. The mid-term exam will be the 2002 release AP German Language Exam. Students will participate in review games, work with listening activities, and practice writing. Second Semester Pacing: Third Quarter Weeks 1, 2, and 3 At the start of second semester, students will work a little in Komm mit! (Winkler, 2002) Level II. Students will work in Chapter 9. This chapter makes reference to where we live, in the city or in the country. The chapter highlights the advantages and disadvantages of city-living and country-living. The chapter also emphasizes the proper use of prepositions, which was reviewed already in class. In addition to working in Komm mit! (Winkler, 2002) Level II, students will complete a chapter on grammar in Kaleidoskop (Moeller et al., 2007). They will work in chapter 6, which covers the proper use of prepositions in German. Additional materials will also be used to supplement student work. Weeks 4 and 5 Next, students will work on Thema 6 in Kaleidoskop (Moeller et al., 2007). This chapter deals with the work world. Students will learn about careers and career opportunities that require the use of the German language. Students will explore varying topics through readings and listening activities.

AP German Language Syllabus 5 Week 6 and 7 Prior to moving into Thema 7, students will work more with adjective endings in Germany. They will do this in chapter 7 of Kaleidoskop (Moeller et al., 2007) and chapter 13 of Handbuch zur deutschen Grammatik (Rankin & Wells, 2004). Additional resources will be supplemented as necessary. Their review will culminate with a test. Weeks 8 and 9 Students will next cover multicultural society. Students will be afforded opportunities to discuss similarities and differences between multiculturalism in Germany and the United States. Readings will come from Kaleidoskop s (Moeller et al., 2007) Thema 7; the readings include a poem ( Ich habe zwei Heimatländer [ I have two home lands ] by Sabri Cakir), and other short stories. Additional information will be taken from about.german.com. Students will end this segment by creating and video taping roll plays. They will share their videos with each other in class one day. Week 10 I will either choose: Sophie Scholl: die letzte Tage (Rothemund &Breinersdorfer, 2005), Das Wunder von Bern (Wortmann, 2002), or Mostly Martha (Nettelbeck, 2002). Before watching the film, students will be provided with background information as needed. Upon completion, students will journal their thoughts and have a discussion about what they have seen. Fourth Quarter Week 1and 2 Students work in Thema 8 and chapter 8 of Kaleidoskop (Moeller et al., 2007). The focus is on people, young and old. From there, they will begin to work more with the subjunctive case. Week 3 and 4 In keeping with the subjunctive case, students will review it more intensely in chapter 20 of Handbuch zur deutschen Grammatik (Rankin & Wells, 2004). These two weeks will be dedicated to preparing students more fully for the AP Exam. Students will work more intensively with picture sequences, write essays, and practice listening and speaking activities in the language laboratory. Week 5 During Week 5 Students will take the AP German Language Exam. Following the exam, students will have an opportunity to watch another film in German. Watching a movie will provide them with a way to relax after the pressure of the exam.

AP German Language Syllabus 6 Week 6, 7, 8 and 9 With the AP German Language Exam behind them, students will have an opportunity to read short novels in German. Based on the needs and interests of students, they will read two of the following: Emil und die Detektive (Kästner, 1994), Yildiz heißt Stern (Heyne, 1994), Im Land der Schokolade und Bananen (Gündisch, 1992), Wilhelm Tell (Schiller,2006), or Faust (Goethe,2006). Students will employ various reading strategies, journal summaries of the chapters in the book, and participate in discussions to increase fluency in German and comprehension of the text. The readings will end with a test, which will act as the final exam for the school year. Additional Learning Opportunities Students are also encouraged to participate in the following other organizations and events that occur throughout the school year: Bi-Weekly Food Days in Class National Honor Society Tutoring Program German Club Delta Epsilon Phi (German High School Honor Society) Friendship Connection, Inc. Exchange Program Trips to Germany, Austria, or Switzerland through ACIS Educational Tours ImaginNATIONS evening with Elementary School Students International Night hosted by Foreign Language Teachers
