We recommend that you read the entire document. Please ensure that you update the DAT files on your computer to the latest version. IMPORTANT: McAfee does not support automatic upgrading of a pre-release version of the software. To upgrade to a later beta release, a release candidate, or a production release of the software, you must first uninstall the existing version of the software. Create a directory for the VirusScan Command Line software on your hard disk. 2. Copy the VirusScan Command Line files to that directory. 3. Update the PATH environment variable to include the directory. REMOVING THE SOFTWARE Change to the VirusScan Command Line directory, then delete all VirusScan Command Line files from your hard disk. The list of files installed by the VirusScan Command Line software are as follows: MCSCAN32.DLL 32-bit Anti-Malware Engine SCAN.EXE VirusScan Command Line CONFIG.DAT Engine file LICENSE.DAT License file VCL605WPG.PDF Product Guide LICENSE.TXT License document README.TXT This document SIGNLIC.TXT Third-party license information UPDATING DAT FILES DAT files are not included with the Command Line Scanner package. They must be downloaded separately and copied to the location where the Command Line Scanner is installed. DAT files are contained in a single compressed file that you can download from the Internet.
4 1. Navigate to the FTP location ftp://ftp.mcafee.com/commonupdater/current/vscandat1000/dat/0000/ 2. To gain access, type anonymous as your user name and your address as the password when prompted. 3. Look for a filename that is of the format avvdat-nnnn.zip, where nnnn is the DAT version number. This file contains the DAT files, compressed in ZIP format. The number given to the file changes on a regular basis. A higher number indicates a later version of the DAT files. To use the new DAT files: 1. Create a download directory. 2. Change to the download directory, and download the new compressed avvdat-nnnn.zip file. 3. Use a suitable compression utility to extract the files from the.zip file into the installation-directory. Ensure to extract all the files. 4. Allow the updated files to overwrite the existing DAT files. Your anti-virus software will now use the new DAT files to scan for viruses. KNOWN ISSUES There are no known issues at this time. RESOLVED ISSUES V ISSUE: Long and unicoded names of files being scanned were not displayed on screen in the Japanese version of Windows XP. V ISSUE: VSCL for Japanese Windows XP SP3
5 does not display DAT versions when running scan.exe with the "/version" option. In addition to this it does not display the scanned files when running scan.exe with the "/ad" option. The scan process runs correctly in the background. (Reference ID: ) 2. ISSUE: When running scan.exe, wildcards in the target are not supported. (Reference ID: ) RESOLUTION: Case insensitive search is done on Windows and case sensitive search on POSIX-based platforms. 3. ISSUE: Context IDs specified in the command line parameters to VSCL are not passed to the Engine when performing a winmem scan. (Reference ID: ) 4. ISSUE: The application does not run if installed in a folder created with an Input language inconsistent with the currrent default ANSI code page, reporting error "Error: Failed to initialize AVEngine" (Reference ID: ) v ISSUE: File names can be reported inconsistently in embedded objects. (Reference ID: ) RESOLUTION: This is because the codepage information is not always being available to the scanner. We rely on this information to encode text in the correct character set. Where this information is available, the scanner will default to UTF-8. For some character sets that use extended codes this might result in what appears to be garbled text, but is in fact the UTF-8 equivalent, based on the data available. A new switch is also available (/ascii) to modify this behaviour. This will force the scanner to display filenames as ascii text. ENGINE END-OF-LIFE PROGRAM Your anti-virus software is only as good as its last update! Updating your DAT files and anti-malware Engine regularly is essential and a MUST! Sometimes architectural changes to the way that the DAT files and anti-malware Engine work together make it critical for you to update your Engine; an old Engine WILL NOT catch some of today's threats. McAfee(R) Labs recommends having as part of your Security Policy Program, an Engine Update process to take advantage of the latest technology and stay
7 protected! THE PROBLEM Today's threats are evolving almost on a daily basis. Software providers continue to make changes to their operating systems and applications that can change the way a program acts or works, and an anti-virus program may not understand the changes. McAfee Labs releases regular DAT files ensuring that full protection is added to all McAfee products. The DAT files contain information required to detect and remove threats - what to look for and where to look for it. McAfee Labs adds around 500 new detections daily to the DAT files. If you are not up-to-date, you are vulnerable to any one of them that gets a foothold in the field (also known as "in the wild"). THE SOLUTION Taking this into account, McAfee regularly updates its anti-malware Engine used by ALL McAfee anti-virus solutions. The engine understands all different structures in which a virus could lurk - EXE files, Microsoft Office files, Linux files, and so on. Occasionally, these changes require us to make significant architectural changes to the Engine as well as the DAT files. As part of a sound security best-practices program, McAfee Labs strongly recommends that users of ALL McAfee anti-virus products update the Engine in the products they have deployed. To check your Engine version, locate the file "mcscan32.dll" using Windows Explorer, right-click the file and select "Properties". Select the "Details" tab and see the "Product Version". If you need to update, you must update your anti-malware Engine immediately from our download site. THE ENGINE END-OF-LIFE PROGRAM To ensure protection from the evolving malicious code threat, you must update the release of McAfee's latest anti-malware Engine as soon as possible.
8 When a new Engine is released, the existing Engine begins its countdown to its end of life and will therefore no longer be supported by McAfee.
