Assembly A few basic components, plus useful and well-designed accessories, form the basis for economical scaffolding construction. Since ergonomic aspects such as handiness and low weight for all components have an effect on the erection time, the load-bearing capacity and dead weight of the parts have been optimally matched to one another. Assembly with basic components 1 1 Base out by laying the guardrails alongside the facade; this marks the assembly position of the scaffolding. No measurement work for setting out is necessary. Place the adjustable base plates at the required distance from the wall on a load-distributing surface. Hang the U starter transom (only in the ladder access bay) from the adjustable base plates, then insert the deck. Set up the first two assembly frames and connect them to the guardrail. 2 2 Place the deck in these assembly frames. Using a spirit level on the guard rail, align the scaffolding bay longitudinally by appropriate spindle adjustment. Then vertically adjust the assembly frame in its axis. Insert and fix the diagonal brace. Aligning the wedge half-coupler with the marker hole (Euro Speedy Frame) achieves a perpendicular alignment transversely to the frame axis. A horizontal strut is needed only in the diagonal bay. Place the next assembly frame on the base plates, connect with the guard rail and insert the deck. 3 3 Next, assemble the adjacent scaffolding bays, with the sequence of the work always remaining the same: Place assembly frame on the base plates Attach guard rail Insert deck Align the scaffolding bays, beginning at the bay next to the already aligned first bay. Insert and fix the diagonal braces each further brace provides stiffening for 5 scaffolding bays as described, either in same direction or in zigzag form. 14

Assembly with basic components 4 4 In the next scaffolding level start with the first scaffolding bay. The further working steps are repeated on every scaffolding level: Set up assembly frame Attach guard rail Insert deck Insert toe board Insert and fix diagonal brace Ladders are arranged in an offset pattern. Construct the scaffolding level in the same way as the lower level. Install any anchoring necessary straight away. This is the only way to ensure the stability of the scaffolding during actual assembly. 5 5 On the top level, insert end guard rail supports and the three-piece side protection (guard rails and toe board). 6 6 Depending on local regulations, a guard rail must be provided ahead of the rest of the structure during assembly. This rail is assembled bay by bay from the already secured scaffolding level. 15

Assembly Standard assembly Simple, safe, fast and very strong those are the requirements placed on modern scaffolding: SpeedyScaf meets all these requirements. With its basic components assembly frame, adjustable base plates, scaffolding decks, guardrails, diagonal braces and toe boards scaffolding is assembled for the facade in a logical sequence. Depending on the roof projection, optimum adjustment is achieved using console brackets. 16

Gable scaffolding Alignment and assembly 7 7 For gable scaffolding, the middle scaffolding bays (preferably the access bays) are aligned with the ridge. Further assembly, usually symmetrical, follows on both sides. The scaffolding is optimally adjusted to the roof angle by appropriate selection of the bay lengths. Aluminium Bridging-ledger 8 For large roof overhangs, the installation of aluminium bridging ledgers is ideal. Spigots on aluminium bridging ledgers hold the assembly frames above them and permit a step-by-step reduction of the bay width. 8 9 Console bracket 0.5 m / 0.73 m 9a 9b 9 By installing 0.5 m (or 0.73 m brackets with bolted-on spigot), the existing bay width can be reduced by 0.5 m. 9a Reduction with 0.5 m bracket. 9b Alternative: Reduction with 0.73 m bracket and bolted-on spigot for channel section. 17

Assembly Outside corners The examples show the standard application. Any length adjustment needed is performed as shown on page For a gap-free transition at the corner the frames are positioned flush. Inside corners For a gap-free transition at the corner the frames are positioned flush. In the overlapping bay, side protection is afforded with a telescopic guard rail or tube and couplers, and with a correspondingly long toe board m bracket on the inside: The corner is closed by the fitting of a corner deck, 0,36 m (special part, Art. No ), which helps to maintain the permissible distance from the wall. 10a 10a View from above. 13a 13a View of corner area from below a 11 Widening at the top level is possible with the use of a swivelling and a fixed bracket together on one upright tube. This avoids any height mismatch in the scaffolding deck levels. 11a Scaffolding widening, view from below Version with 0.73 m bracket on the outside: If the scaffolding is widened with a 0.73 m bracket in the closing level, a flat and gap-free transition in the corner area is possible in conjunction with a 1.57 m long bay fitted at the end. 14a 14a Version as above, seen from below. 18

Height adjustment Length adjustment In the case of inclined terrain, assembly starts at the highest point. In conjunction with adjustment frames 0.66 m, 1.0 m and 1.5 m problem-free adjustment of the scaffolding to the lie of the ground is possible. The installation of the swivelling adjustable base 60 is recommended for even transmission of the loads. 17 Length adjustment in the middle of the scaffolding depending on bay lengths: The scaffolding is positioned left and right, with the fitted bay in approximately the centre of the scaffolding. In the adjustment bay, lapped steel planks or scaffolding boards are used for the deck, with telescopic guard rail or with tubes and couplers fitted as side protection. 16 If an assembly frame standard has to be extended, this is done by connecting a steel scaffolding tube using two swivel couplers with a spacing of at least 50 cm. For permissible loading as a function of the height h see table. 50 cm 18 h 16 Tab. 3 Permissible loading as a function of height h Height h [m] Perm. standard load [kn] Length adjustment at the scaffolding corner depending on the bay lengths: The scaffolding section with the fitted bay is assembled with the level offset by the deck thickness. The deck of the fitted bay is suspended on one side from the assembly frame and on the other side rests on the deck of the second scaffolding section. 19

Anchoring The anchoring of the scaffolding is in accordance with building authority approval or with the individual verification of structural strength or respective to local regulations. In addition to the required number of anchors, particular care must be taken that the wall inserts used are suitable for the base material. A pull-out test must be conducted and recorded in the appropriate form and for the application in question SpeedyScaf wall tie with double coupler 20 V-type wall tie with double coupler Wall tie with connector coupler 22 SpeedyScaf wall tie and inclined wall tie with double coupler 20

Application technology Scaffolding access 27 Internal ladder access 27 For scaffolding access, internal ladder access (standard solution), access decks with integrated or separate ladder, or external platform stairs are available. 28 The external platform stair access is the appropriate alternative when craftsmen of various trades are working on the scaffolding. Decks are provided in full for the working platform. 29 The SpeedyScaf stairway tower is the preferred access to higher working areas. The stairs are installed in parallel (Fig. 28) or alternating (Fig. 29) directions, and permit rapid and safe access to the working area. 28 External platform stair access (stairs in parallel direction) 29 SpeedyScaf stairway tower (stairs in alternating direction) 22

Brick guards Brick guards must be used when there is any risk of slipping on the roof. Either brick guards or protection nets can be attached to the brick guard support. 30 Building offset Facades with projections can be scaffolded when scaffolding sections are offset: The last assembly frame of the inner scaffolding section and the first frame of the outer section are 0.5 m apart. In this way the system lengths can be maintained. A bracket of the appropriate width is attached to the last-but-one assembly frame of the inner scaffolding section. The remaining inner gap between the assembly frame is covered by a lapped steel plank. 31 The deck in the assembly frame must be secured by a lock against lift-off m A fan provides protection against falling objects. The surfaces must be covered with system decks. 34 Projections, e.g. oriel windows or balconies, are easily provided with scaffolding using brackets of appropriate length. On the projecting sections decks of the required length (max m), cover the space between the brackets. 23

Application technology Dormers Dormers can be quickly and safely scaffolded with standard material; expensive structures using tubes and couplers can be dispensed with The assembly frames on the brackets must be secured with locking pins. 36 Connect lattice girders to the assembly frame and then fasten U transoms (with spigot and half-coupler Art. No ) to it. Secure the assembly frames of the last and last-but-one levels using locking pins The side walls of dormers are easily scaffolded using SpeedyScaf aluminium U-double transoms. Assembly frames from the last scaffolding level must be secured with locking pins. 38 SpeedyScaf and Allround scaffolding can be combined thanks to standardized dimensions. 24

Dormers The SpeedyScaf frame for balustrades in use for a dormer m Speedy Frames for balustrades are available for work on dormers and walls. Birdcage scaffolding Gantry frame The SpeedyScaf bridging ledger (special part Art. No ) of 2.57 m or 3.07 m length permits rapid and system-conforming construction of birdcage scaffolding. They offer a full-surface scaffolding deck and a permissible load-bearing capacity of 2.0 kn/m 2 over the entire surface Gantry frames are used to construct pedestrian passageways underneath scaffolding. Complete covering with scaffolding decks protects passers-by. The remaining construction can be continued with 0.73 m or 1.09 m wide scaffolding. Stiffening of the gantry frames and anchoring of the scaffolding should be in accordance with German approval m 1.09 m 42 An even and gap-free scaffolding deck surface can be obtained by placing 15 cm long butt tubes on the spigots of the top assembly frame. The lattice girders are attached to the butts and to the assembly frame standard using double couplers. In any case, structural strength verification is required for the supporting scaffolding underneath. Support and additional bracing must be provided in accordance with structural requirements and with local conditions. 25

Removal or attachment of scaffolding bays 49a 49b 49c With SpeedyScaf, it is easy to attach or remove individual scaffolding bays. The scaffolding frame is, once the deck has been slightly lifted tilted slightly outwards and the deck to be removed is, while still suspended on the other side set down on the existing scaffolding deck. The deck can now be simply detached (Fig. 49d). Attachment is in the reverse sequence. 49d 29

Freestanding scaffolding Freestanding scaffolding is required when it cannot or may not be anchored to the facade. Here the basic rules of standard DIN 4420, Section 5.4, must be complied with. In the open: up to a maximum platform height of 12 m the ratio of height to smallest base side length must not exceed 3:1. In closed areas: up to a platform height of 20 m the ratio of height to smallest base side length must not exceed 4:1. 50a 50b 50c Section 50c Plan view The ratios quoted apply only for scaffolding with steel assembly frames. 51 Tab. 9 Basic rules for erection In the open H a 3 1 H max. = 12 m H 50a 50b 50c Tube raker Second scaffolding section as buttress Projecting scaffolding bay as buttress In closed areas H a 4 1 H max. = 20 m a L L a 32

Rolling towers as per DIN 4420 Rolling towers made of SpeedyScaf parts are assembled with steel or aluminium assembly frames, 52a by connecting together assembly frames using swivel couplers, or alternatively with tubes and couplers by connecting together assembly frames with lattice girders by using mobile beams (Art. No ) The permissible erection heights and any ballast necessary must be taken into account. 52a One-sided or two-sided widening with an assembly frame and swivel couplers. 34 Pallets Layher Pallets help to save labour and costs for storage, transport, assembly and inventory control. All pallet types have been developed on the basis of practical experience. A truck with a loading crane can handle the entire material transport work, including loading and unloading in the warehouse and at the sites. The warehouse is better organised and counting processes are speeded up, hence saving costs. The material is stored flat or upright, tidy and ready to hand, for availability at the installation site in the shortest possible time. The crane or the fork-lift can be used to move the filled pallets and shorten the transport distances. Scaffolding parts are removed from the pallets on site with a scaffolding hoist. The pallets may only be used close to the ground and must not be lifted above personnel. All pallets are suitable for fork-lift or crane transport, full pallets are stackable to save storage space. The Assembly Frame pin pallet is an optimised and low-cost solution for vertical palletising. It holds up to 20 assembly frames and is dimensioned such that 3 pallets 0.73 m in width can be placed side by side on the truck loading surface. Fork guides and a central rung ensure absolute safety against tilting during fork-lift transport. L x W 1.2 x 0.77 m for 0.73 m frames L x W 1.2 x 1.13 m for 1.09 m frames In the Universal pallet, either 12 assembly frames, 0.73 m, or 10 robust decks, 0.61 m, or 24 wide steel decks, 0.32 m, can be stored flat and transported and stacked by crane or fork-lifter. The pallet posts only have to be changed round when the stacked material changes. L x W 1.37 x 0.86 m, permissible load capacity 1.5 t The Logi pallet guarantees optimum transport and storage of frames, decks, guard rails, diagonal braces, toe boards, standards, ledgers, tubes and much else. The loaded pallet is lifted up with the fork-lift or crane, and the stacked material is taken directly from the pallet by the fork-lift. Up to five pallets can be stacked on top of one another on suitable ground. The tubes are stored in the lower pallet frame when the empty pallet is transported. The hot-dip-galvanised Skeleton box in standardised European dimensions is stackable with Euro pallets. The upper part has crane eyelets. A lateral opening allows stacked material to be removed even when several pallets are stacked one above the other. L x W x H 1.2 x 0.8 x 0.53, permissible load capacity 2 t L x W 1.37 x 0.97 m, permissible load capacity 1.5 t 34

Software Keeping costs under control means consistently cutting production and erection times and optimising the material use. There is further potential for rationalisation in logistics, in palletising, scaffolding hoists and the use of scaffolding-specific software. Here too Layher can offer convincing solutions. From the very beginning, Layher has sought to apply electronic data processing to reduce the work involved in scaffolding planning, organisation and accounting, and has developed practical programs. Scaffolding Planner With the Layher Scaffolding Planner, you can calculate in seconds how much material is needed for facade scaffolding using Layher SpeedyScaf components. With the optional equalizer module, photos taken with a digital camera can be imaged true to scale. The program proposes a structure, on the basis of your specifications, including anchoring, bracing and side protection, and in accordance with the approvals or type tests. The material list is created by the push of a key and can be printed out immediately together with the assembly sketch. Layher GBM For economical handling of technical and commercial tasks. Dimensioning, preparation of quotations, writing of invoices and printing out of accounts are the main areas covered by this program. Available only in German language. MAPMAX With MAPMAX, you create a three-dimensional model of the structure to be scaffolded, including walls, gables and balconies. MAPMAX is fast and simple, and offers new ways of for example directly shortening or extending scaffolding planes using the mouse. Even complex scaffolding structures can be created using this ambitious program. 35

SpeedyScaf in operation F a s t U s e a t t h e F a c a d e. Whatever the building which needs scaffolding looks like, whatever the angle at which the walls are to one another, with offset wall planes, oriel windows or gabled roof windows; with SpeedyScaf there's always an economical solution. Lattice girders are available for entrances or other building parts which have to be bridged. For heights up to 80 m, the 0.73 m wide scaffolding can be assembled in accordance with type test Ty 9/96, while greater heights required individual verification of structural strength. 36

Round scaffolding and towers R o u n d w e g o S p e e d y S c a f w i t h a d i f f e r e n c e. Round scaffolding is just as easy to put up using SpeedyScaf equipment. The assembly frames are connected to one another at the inner standard by swivel couplers. The bay lengths must be selected such that the permissible distances from the walls are not exceeded. Even complex tower buildings can be dependably scaffolded. Depending on the form and facade design, the scaffolding is supplemented with system-linked or system-free lattice girders. 37

Scaffolding for industry and refurbishment Safe working platforms quick to build. Scaffolding for industry frequently involves unusual requirements when it comes to load capacity and adaptability. Machines and plants have to be serviced and repaired, apparatus and equipment has to be fitted, and electrical units have to be replaced. With its permissible load capacities of up to 6.0 kn/m 2 and a large number of useful extras and accessories, SpeedyScaf permits economical use in this field too. 38

SpeedyScaf with Protect and roofs For environmental protection, w e a t h e r p r o t e c t i o n a n d n o i s e p r e v e n t i o n. SpeedyScaf in conjunction with Protect and roof systems provide perfect protection against the weather and for the environment. Cassette roofs afford dependable protection of the site from above and thus help to shorten building times. Repairs to roofs or the addition of new storeys to buildings can, particularly in conjunction with side coverings (Keder or Protect System) be performed regardless of weather conditions. The Protect System forms an effective cover. Fine facades are protected, and work is possible in contaminated areas too, for example in asbestos clearance. 39
