It provides a seamless progression from Cambridge Primary or can be used as a standalone curriculum to develop learners skills and confidence in English, Mathematics and Science. It offers a curriculum framework for educational success for learners (typically years old), with an optional testing structure. It also helps prepare in the lead up to studying at Cambridge IGCSE level. Cambridge Checkpoint tests are for use at the end of Cambridge Secondary 1. They are marked by Cambridge International Examinations and provide schools with an external international benchmark for student performance. Cambridge Checkpoint tests enable feedback to be provided on a learner s strengths and weaknesses in key curriculum areas. Feedback of this kind is an invaluable source of information. Schools and colleges will be able to make strategic decisions, drawing upon a pool of information and specialist reporting tools built into Cambridge Checkpoint. Learners taking the test receive a Statement of Achievement which gives an indication of their academic progress during this education stage. Cambridge Checkpoint tests are available in English*, Mathematics and Science and can be offered at two sessions during the year. The tests cover all major areas of learning required in the first years of an international secondary education. *The Cambridge curriculum frameworks for English include a First Language and a Second Language option. Cambridge English Language Assessment provides formal summative testing for English as a Second Language (ESL) at this level with the Cambridge English: Preliminary (PET) exam. The workbook should be used alongside a core textbook as well as classroom instruction, and may be used within the classroom or as a self-study or homework resource. Biology Workbook Physics Workbook Chemistry Workbook g To... is a verb that means to slow down. Exercise 2.3 Making comparisons h To... is a verb which means to go faster. i... is a noun which is another word for movement. When you talk about how objects move, you often need to compare the movements of different objects. In this exercise, you will practise using the correct language when making comparisons. Three children ran in the local sports day. Exercise 2.2 Interpreting the shape of a graph A distance time graph is a useful way of representing how an object moves. In this exercise, you will use words which describe a graph as well as words which describe motion. This distance time graph represents a car s journey along a road. FORTHCOMING distance travelled B C Amrita ran 300 metres in Nailan ran 100 metres Surriya ran 200 metres 50 seconds in 12.5 seconds in 30 seconds 1 Calculate the average speed for each child. Amrita Nailan Surriya A time/min Look at these statements. The first statement is about the gradient (slope) of the graph. The second statement is about what the graph tells us about how the car moved. In section A, the gradient of the graph is not very steep. The distance between the car and its starting point is increasing slowly. Therefore, at first, the car is travelling slowly. Now complete these descriptions of sections B and C in a similar way. 1 How does the graph change in section B? In section B, the gradient of the graph... This shows that the car is travelling... 2 How does the graph change in section C? distance travelled Remember: speed = time taken 2 Read each sentence below and decide whether it is correct. If a sentence is incorrect, cross out the word in bold and write a word on the line to make it correct. The first has been done for you. 65 IB Diploma Core Colourful illustrations to aid visual learning Covers all aspects of the revised subject guide 2 Figure 2.1 How many planets are there in our solar system? Headline: IBM s Watson Supercomputer Crowned Jeopardy King. In what sense, if any, can a computer be said to know and understand things? Mercury The nature of knowledge Venus Earth thought we knew will turn out to be false. Since we are fallible beings, this is indeed possible. But, as we saw in Chapter 1, this simply shows that knowledge requires something less than certainty. In practice, when we say that something is true, we usually mean that it is beyond reasonable doubt. Since we are willing to imprison and in some cases execute people on the basis of evidence that is beyond reasonable doubt, this is surely an acceptable criterion for saying that we know something. Belief If you know something, then what you claim to know must not only be true, but you must also believe it to be true. We might say that, while truth is an objective requirement for knowledge, belief is a subjective requirement for it. If you have no conscious awareness of something, then it makes little sense to say that you know it. That is why encyclopaedias do not know that Paris is the capital of France, and pocket calculators do not know that = 4. ACTIVITY 2.1 Mars 1. Can you think of any cases in which someone might be said to know something without knowing that they know it? 2. As technology develops, do you think it will ever make sense to say that a computer knows things? Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune Since the time of Plato ( BCE), some philosophers have argued that when you know something you are in a completely different mental state to when you merely believe it. For when you know something you are certain of it, and when you merely believe it you are not. However, we shall adopt a less demanding standard of knowledge. Rather than think of knowledge as being completely different from belief, it may make more sense to think in terms of a belief knowledge continuum, 10 Impossible with unjustified beliefs at one end of the continuum, beliefs for which there is some evidence in the middle, and beliefs which are beyond reasonable doubt at the other end. Here are three examples of various kinds of belief: A vague belief. I may vaguely believe that eating tomatoes helps to reduce the risk of heart disease, but have no idea where I came across this idea and readily abandon it in the light of counter-evidence. A well-supported belief. I may believe that Smith killed Jones, and be able to give evidence for my belief, but still be unwilling to say that I know that this is the case. A belief that is beyond reasonable doubt. I may find the evidence which supports the claim that the Americans landed on the moon in 1969 so convincing and the counter-evidence of conspiracy theorists so flimsy that I am willing to say that I know the Americans landed on the moon. Given this way of looking at things, the question of exactly where we should draw the line between belief and knowledge does not appear to be a very interesting one. It is like asking where, in a spectrum of shades running from black to white, black ends and white begins. The important thing, surely, is to try to develop as reasonable and well-supported a set of beliefs as possible. Figure 2.3 Barack Obama s birth certificate ACTIVITY 2.2 Where on the belief knowledge continuum, running from 10 to +10, would you put the following propositions? a. Christopher Columbus discovered America in b. If A is bigger than B and B is bigger than C, then A is bigger than C. c. Human beings are descended from apes. d. Murder is wrong. 5 Unlikely e. Aliens have visited the earth at some time during its history. f. All metals expand when heated. g. Human beings have an immortal soul. 0 Possible +10 Probable h. It is possible to construct a square with the same area as a given circle.
