System Charge Adjustment This system cannot be appropriately charged by subcooling. This new charging procedure helps prevent over charging. It is important to follow these instructions. You will need to measure the Outdoor Ambient temperature, the Suction Line Pressure (PSIG), The Liquid Temperature and the Liquid Pressure. You will charge to the MINIMUM Liquid Temperature or Maximum Liquid Line Pressure, whichever is reached first. STEP 1 - Check the indoor and outdoor ambient temperatures. Manual Charge Assist Hookup Leave bottle closed until ready to charge The Outdoor Ambient Temperature should be above 60ºF. If if the Outdoor Ambient temperature is below 60ºF then charge to 60ºF temperature and 115 Suction Line Pressure (PSIG) on the charging charts. The unit will be under charged and you will have to return when charging can be accurately performed. The Indoor Ambient Temperature must be kept between 70ºF to 100ºF. Raise the indoor temperature if needed, one method of increasing the indoor temperature is to run the furnace. Decrease the indoor temperature if needed, If the Indoor Ambient Temperature is above 100 ºF, operate the system to decrease the indoor temperature. 125ºF 60ºF Outdoor Temp 100ºF 70ºF Indoor Temp STEP 2 - Stabilize the system. Operate the system in cooling mode for a minimum of ten (10) minutes. Important: Whenever charge is removed or added, the system must be operated for a minimum of ten (10) minutes to stabilize before accurate measurements can be made. 10 MIN. If Suction Line Pressure is below 115 PSIG the system may experience fluctuations in pressures and temperatures due to expansion valve hunting. 4 4TTM3-SF-1
Example This system cannot be appropriately charged by subcooling. This example demonstrates how to obtain your Target (MINIMUM) Liquid Temperature or Maximum Liquid Pressure using the instructions and tables provided on the following pages. 1. Identify the chart that applies to your outdoor unit model number. 2. Find the Measured Outdoor Ambient Temperature along the top of the chart. For this example the Measured Outdoor Ambient Temperature is 97 ºF. 4TTM3060A Locate the Measured Suction Pressure along the left side of the chart. For this example the Measured Suction Pressure is 130 PSIG. 4TTM3060A Determine the Target (MINIMUM) Liquid Temperature at the intersection of the Measured Suction Pressure and the Measured Outdoor Ambient Temperature. 4TTM3060A If intersection falls between two listed temperatures on the table you will need to estimate Find the Maximum Allowable Liquid Pressure. If intersection falls between two listed pressures on the table you will need to estimate. 4TTM3060A Target (MINIMUM) Liquid Temperature = 107ºF 414 Maximum Allowable Liquid Pressure = 414 PSIG 4TTM3-SF-1 5
STEP 3 - Measure Outdoor Ambient air temperature entering coil. Outdoor Ambient air temperature = F 6 STEP 4 - Measure Suction Line and Liquid line pressures Suction Line Pressure = PSIG Liquid Line Pressure = PSIG Note: If Suction Line Pressure is below 115 PSIG the system may experience fluctuations in pressures and temperatures due to expansion valve hunting. If fluctuations in Suction Line Pressure are noted then use the average PSIG. Manual Charge Assist Hookup Leave bottle closed until ready to charge STEP 5 - Determine the Liquid Line Temperature Attach a K-type temperature probe to the Liquid Line close to the Liquid Line Service Valve. The probe must be insulated. Insulation Measured Liquid Line Temp = ºF 107 F 6 4TTM3-SF-1
STEP 6 - Determine Target (MINIMUM) Liquid Temperature 1. Identify the table that applies to your outdoor unit model number. 2. Find the Measured Outdoor Ambient Temperature from Step 3 along the top of the table. If the Outdoor Ambient is below 60 ºF use the 60 ºF temperature on the table. 3. Locate the Measured Suction Pressure from Step 4 along the left side of the table. If system suction PSIG is below 115, use the 115 pressure on the table. 4. Determine the Target (MINIMUM) Liquid Temperature at the intersection of the Measured Suction Pressure and the Measured Outdoor Ambient Temperature. If intersection falls between two listed temperatures on the table you will need to estimate. 5. Locate the Maximum Allowable Liquid Pressure along the bottom of the table. If intersection falls between two listed pressures on the table you will need to estimate. Target (MINIMUM) Liquid Temperature = ºF Maximum Allowable Liquid Pressure = PSIG The following pages contain the charging tables needed for these steps. 4TTM3-SF-1 7
Charging Tables 4TTM3018A1 4TTM3024A1 4TTM3030A1 4TTM3036A1 8 4TTM3-SF-1
Charging Tables 4TTM3042A1 4TTM3048A1 4TTM3060A1 4TTM3-SF-1 9
STEP 7 - Determine Required Refrigerant Adjustment Compare the Measured Liquid Line Temperature from Step 4 against the Target (MINIMUM) Liquid Temperature from Step 6. If the Measured Liquid Line Temperature is above the Target (MINIMUM) Liquid Temperature and the Maximum Allowable Liquid Pressure has not been exceeded, you will add charge to the system. If the Measured Liquid Line Pressure is higher than the Maximum Allowable Liquid Pressure, you will remove charge. If the Measured Liquid Line Temperature is lower than the Target (MINIMUM) Liquid Temperature, you will remove charge. STEP 8 - Add or Remove System Charge Add system charge If step 7 above indicates to add charge: 1. Connect charging hose from bottle to charging port (bottle first). 2. Purge hose at bottle fitting. 3. Open bottle and turn upside down. Once the Measured Liquid Line Temperature is within 1 to 2 ºF of the Target (MINIMUM) Liquid Temperature, stop charging. As the charge level in the unit increases, Suction Pressure might increase slightly and Liquid Line temperature will decrease. Note: The manual charge assist port allows you to charge the unit using liquid. Manual Charge Assist Hookup Leave bottle closed until ready to charge Important: Charging must be performed using the manual charge assist port for accurate charging. Remove system charge If the Measured Liquid Line Pressure is higher than the Maximum Allowable Liquid Pressure or if the Measured Liquid Line Temperature is lower than the Target (MINIMUM) Liquid Temperature, recover refrigerant from the system. 10 4TTM3-SF-1
STEP 9 - Verify Refrigerant Adjustment Run system for ten (10) minutes. Check new Suction Pressure and Liquid Line Temperature. Measured Liquid Line Temperature = ºF Measured Suction Line Pressure = PSIG Measured Liquid Line Pressure = PSIG 10 MIN. If the current Measured Suction Pressure is different than the previous Measured Suction Pressure measured in Step 4, repeat Steps 5-8 and locate the new Target (MINIMUM) Liquid Temperature and Maximum Allowable Liquid Pressure using the table. Adjust charge if required. STEP 10 - Record System Information Record system pressures and temperatures after charging is complete. Outdoor model number = Measured Outdoor Ambient = ºF Measured Indoor Ambient = ºF Measured Liquid Line Temp = ºF Measured Suction Line Temp = ºF Liquid Gage Pressure = PSIG Suction Gage Pressure = PSIG 4TTM3-SF-1 11
