The cross-disciplinary Psychosocial Oncology Option (PSOO) initiated by the Department of Oncology, is offered within existing PhD programs in the School of Social Work, School of Nursing, and the Department of Psychology. It is open to Doctoral students who are interested in broadening their knowledge of psychosocial issues in oncology, and who meet the requirements of their specific department. They will be required to take two core courses, two methodology courses (qualitative; quantitative) and a choice of one of five complementary courses from the Department of Psychology or School of Social Work. In addition, the PhD thesis topic must be germane to psychosocial oncology and approved by the PSOO coordinating committee. P1-1

3 9.0 Rationale Despite an increase in cancer incidence, early diagnosis and improved treatments have allowed patients to live longer lives. Over the course of the cancer illness, patients and their families deal with issues such as pain, emotional distress, palliative care and bereavement. Teaching PhD students about the psychosocial issues involved in cancer will allow new generations of researchers to develop their own independent research programs in this area. In addition, health care professionals with in-depth training in psychosocial oncology will be better able to understand and guide patients and their families through this difficult time. We propose a cross-disciplinary Psychosocial Oncology Option (PSOO) for PhD students in the School of Social Work, School of Nursing and Department of Psychology. This Option will not only allow students and professors in these different departments and faculties to forge links with each other, but also with members of the Department of Oncology who will be an integral part of this new program. By bridging the gap between the disciplines, all of which have direct relevance to cancer care, participating faculty (see appendix) and students will be involved in an initiative that can serve as a model for national and international academic institutes. Coordination of the Program The Psychosocial Oncology Option (PSOO) will be run by an appointed coordinator from one of the participating units, a position which will be rotated every two years. A member of each unit will sit on the coordinating committee which will oversee the operation of PSOO. Faculty members participating in PSOO (see below) will already have a grant-funded research program and will be active in teaching and graduate student supervision. 5 Entrance Requirements Students applying for the Option within the School of Social Work, School of Nursing, or Department of Psychology, must meet the PhD entrance requirements of that particular unit. Once accepted as a PhD student, the PSOO coordinating committee will consider candidates based on academic performance, availability of a supervisor and research interests. Candidates will be required to submit a one page description of their proposed thesis research so that the committee can determine its relevance to the goals of PSOO. Degree Designation Students will be granted a PhD degree from the particular unit they are registered in, with the Option added to the degree designation. For example, a student from the School of Nursing would obtain a PhD in Nursing (Psychosocial Oncology Option). Program Description All students registered in PSOO must fulfill the requirements of the specific program in which they are registered. Each student will be required to take two core courses: Psychosocial Oncology Research (NUR2 783) and Palliative Care in Cancer (EXMD 705). In addition, they will be required to take a Qualitative Methods course. School of Nursing, School of Social Work and Department of Experimental Medicine each offer such a course. Students from the Department of Psychology will choose one of those courses. Students will also be required to take a Quantitative Methods course. School of Nursing and School of Social Work each offer their own course. Students in the Department of Psychology are already required to take statistics courses so they will not have to take one of the above Quantitative Methods courses. Finally, students will also choose one of the five complementary courses given by the School of Social Work or the Department of Psychology.
