1 Using the Database Management Utility to Backup, Restore and Purge the Compass 2.0 Database Compass 2.0 comes equipped with a database management utility (DBMU), located at Start- >Programs ->Compass Windows Downloader->DatabaseManagementUtility. Using this utility, it is a simple process to backup an active database, or restore a database from backup. Database Backup 1. Launch the DBMU using the steps listed above. The below screen will appear. Select the Backup Database radio button and the Compass 2.0 database server from the Server Name drop-down menu. This is the server where the Compass 2.0 database you wish to back up is located. This will usually be ComputerName\Compass20, however, if using a full version of SQL, this information, as well as the Login info will be provided by the SQL Administrator. Once the server name and login credentials have been properly entered, click the Fetch Databases from Server button. All available Compass 2.0 databases located on the specified server will be listed in the Database drop-down menu. Choose the database you wish to back up

2 2. Click the Backup Database button: 3. You ll receive a confirmation message showing the backup location and file name. The file name will be: databasename_date_time.bak NOTES: The directory C:\CompassDataBase\Backup is created automatically. When backing up a database, you have no choice as to the database name or where it is saved, however, if you wish to change the file name, you can do so after the fact, as long as it stays in the above directory, and the.bak file extension remains the same. When restoring a backed up database, only.bak files in the above directory are available for restore

3 Database Restore 1. After launching the DBMU, select the radio button for Restore/Purge Database then the Restore Database radio button. Choose the.bak file you wish to restore from the drop down list and select the Compass 2.0 database server from the Server Name drop-down menu. This is the location where the.bak file selected will be restored. This will usually be ComputerName\Compass20, however If using a full version of SQL, this information, as well as the Login info will be provided by the SQL Administrator. NOTE: In the Select Bak file drop-down, only files with extension.bak located in the C:\CompassDataBase\Backup directory will be available for restore. Carefully select the correct file, based on date and time of backup, from the list. 2. In the Database field, by default, Database name CompassDefaultDB will be shown. If this database name already exists within Compass 2.0, you will have to change this entry to a unique name (see above). Once all information has been properly selected, click Restore Database

4 3. The following message box will be displayed. Press Yes to use the restored Database upon next Compass 2.0 login. 4. After selecting Yes in the previous screenshot, you ll see this message. Click OK. You can then close the DBMU. 5. Upon next login, you ll see the restored Database is automatically selected. Note: In a Compass 2.0 Client only install, you will have the DBMU, but only the Change Database option (discussed in a separate document) will be available

5 Database Purge 1. In the DBMU, choose Restore/Purge Database and select the radio button next to Purge Database. Select the.bak file you wish to purge from the drop down list. Only.bak files in the directory C:\CompassDatabase\Backup will be available for purge. Once the correct back up file has been selected, click on the Purge Database button. You will receive a confirmation message (see below). Once you click OK the selected database will be permanently deleted and can not be retrieved
