3 Managing Identities in Outlook Express Introduction Outlook Express supports identities so if more than one person uses the same computer for , each person can receive and send their own . Each person can have a separate mailbox, contact list, and personal settings. For example, a household may have a main identity for the account, but separate identities can be created for each member of the household. Additional security can be assigned to each identity by requiring a password when logging in to an identity. When a new account is created, Main Identity is used as the account identity. You can access Outlook Express using this Main Identity and then create the additional identities for the other members of your household. Introduction 3

4 Verizon Online Creating a New Outlook Express Identity New identities are created in Outlook Express so multiple people can have separate mailboxes, contact lists, and personal settings on a shared computer. By using your Outlook Express identity, you see only your own messages and contacts. To create a new Outlook Express identity: Open Outlook Express. Select Identities from the File menu. 3. Select Add New Identity from the Identities menu. 4. Enter the name you want to use for your new identity. You can use any name, but it should be one that is easy to remember and one that is recognized by the other uses of this account. 4 Managing Identities in Outlook Express

5 Managing Identities in Outlook Express 5. Select Require a password if you want to provide additional security for this address. The Enter Password dialog box opens. Enter the password you want to use in the New Password and Confirm New Password fields. The password may be up to 15 alphanumeric characters. Click OK to save the password. 6. Click OK. 7. 7 Managing Identities in Outlook Express Managing Outlook Express Identities The Manage Identities window is you to maintain the Outlook Express identities. You can perform five operations in the Manage Identities window. Add a new identity Remove an identity Update an identity Setting the startup identity (Optional) Setting the default identity Adding a New Identity New Outlook Express identities are needed if additional household members want separate mailboxes and addresses. You may also discover that you want to create additional addresses to be used only in certain circumstances (e.g., when ordering merchandise online, when completing online surveys, or for specific roles like related to a club, athletic team, or hobby). To add a new identity: 1. Open Outlook Express. 2. Select Identities from the File menu. 3. Select Manage Identities from the Identities menu. Managing Outlook Express Identities 7

You can use any name, but it should be one that is easy to remember and one that is recognized by the other uses of this account. 5. Removing an Identity As your needs change or additional computers are purchased for your household, you will need to remove Outlook Express identities. To remove an Outlook Express identity: 1. 12 Verizon Online Updating the Properties of an Identity It is a good practice to periodically change your passwords. This is also true for your accounts. You can add a password or change a current password by updating your identity properties. You can also change the name that displays for an identity using the Identity Properties window. To update an identity s properties: 1. Open Outlook Express. 2. Select Identities from the File menu. 3. Select Manage Identities from the Identities menu. 12 Managing Identities in Outlook Express

13 Managing Identities in Outlook Express 4. Select the identity whose properties you are editing and click Properties. 5. Make the needed changes and click OK. 6. Click Close if you are finished managing your identities. Managing Outlook Express Identities 13

14 Verizon Online Setting the Startup Identity This is an optional process that allows you to select the identity that displays whenever Outlook Express is opened. To define the startup identity: 1. Open Outlook Express. 2. Select Identities from the File menu. 3. Select Manage Identities from the Identities menu. 14 Managing Identities in Outlook Express

15 Managing Identities in Outlook Express 4. Select Use this identity when starting a program if you want to assign an identity to display whenever Outlook Express opens. Note: If this option is not selected, Outlook Express opens with the identity of the last person who used it. 5. If you choose this option, select an identity from the drop-down menu that will automatically open when Outlook Express opens. 6. Click Close if you are finished managing your identities. Setting the Default Identity If a program sends an instruction to open Outlook Express but cannot request an identity from the user, the identity selected in this procedure is automatically used. Defining the default identity: 1. Open Outlook Express. 2. Select Identities from the File menu. Managing Outlook Express Identities 15

18 Verizon Online Switching Outlook Express Identities If the same computer is used for more than one member of the household, you need to switch identities whenever you want to access your account if another member of the household was the last to access Outlook Express or if another identity is used as the startup identity. To switch Outlook Express identities: 1. Select Switch Identity from the File menu. 2. Select the identity you want to open and click OK. Outlook Expresses closes and reopens with the identity you selected. 18 Managing Identities in Outlook Express
