1 THANK YOU FOR INSTALLING CARBONITE SERVER BACKUP! This guide walks you through the setup of a basic file backup. You can set up a useful backup for files on your server in just a few minutes. You can go back later to take advantage of the full range of features available in Carbonite Server Backup. See the User Guide for full documentation of Carbonite Server Backup. 2 The Cloud Certificate The first time you launch the application after a new installation of Carbonite Server Backup, you are prompted to download and import your Cloud Certificate. Click the Download button and download your Cloud Certificate (filename cloud.carbonite). Then click the Import Certificate button, and browse to the cloud.carbonite file that you just downloaded. What is a Cloud Certificate? Your Cloud Certificate is the key to your subscription. Each of your protected computers needs its own copy of your Cloud Certificate in order to be allowed access to your Cloud storage space. Add a Backup Set To add a backup set, click the Add New Backup Set button in the left pane: 2

3 Select a Backup Type After you click Add New Backup Set, a new screen will appear showing which types of data have been detected on your system. For your first backup set, choose File System. Define the Backup Set Choose which files and folders you wish to back up. If you re not sure, select it all! Set Your Backup Location Select Disk and Cloud for the highest level of protection. 3

4 Select a Disk Storage location (either local or elsewhere on the local network). Choose a location with plenty of free storage space. How much space do I need? There is no simple way to calculate this in advance, but take note of the space that your original data uses, and keep in mind that you ll probably want enough space to store at least a few backups. Other Settings Several other settings are available: Edit your backup schedule Advanced backup settings Retention Settings notification preferences Accept the defaults for now, you can always edit them later. Name, Save, and Done! Choose a name for your new backup set, and click Save. Pop-up Messages Two messages will pop up after you save your first backup set: 1. A prompt to set up a one-time full backup Protection for your server begins only after the first full backup has completed. A one-time full backup provides immediate protection for your system. 2. A prompt to set up notifications for backup successes, warnings, and failures These notification s are an important component of your system s protection and keep you aware of the status of your backups and restores. 4
