3 Foreword 7 Dear members, sponsors and friends of EHI, with this fourth study from the POS Systems series, provides a survey of the current cash desk landscape in German retail and indicates topics and trends which play a role at the POS. The growing technical and organisational demands on POS terminals have prompted many retail companies to invest in efficient new POS systems in the last few years. The EHI study POS Systems 2012 shows: in the next few years, too, POS systems will account for a weighty percentage of IT investments. For many years, has been conducting research and providing services addressing all aspects of information technology in the retail industry. The projects are designed and carried out in collaboration with our working groups, in which more than 500 member companies of the EHI network participate. With the IT trade fair EuroCIS, the EHI technology conferences and our magazine rt-retail technology, we offer the retail industry and its partners a whole range of information and communication facilities with a clear industry focus. We thank the participants in the study as well as all other persons who cooperated in preparing this study. We were able to update the study with their kind support. The reason why non-cash payment methods nonetheless rate highly is the all-embracing view which retail companies take of the overall payment handling process. The effort that goes into cash handling in the back office also is included in the calculation, along with security issues, both at the checkout and in the back office. Also, recent changes in Germany in the area of cash logistics make retailers think about alternatives.

Manual handling of the coupons, as practised in the past, is hardly manageable anymore. The employees of the outlet additionally are assisted with CRM tools and business analytics at the POS terminal. 39 percent of the surveyed companies say that they provide CRM functions in their terminals; in future this should be the case at 56 percent of the surveyed retail companies. Centrally controlled activities are certainly important, but at the same time it is becoming increasingly necessary to furnish tools to the outlet staff with which the contact with the
