2 CHURCH OF ST. AUGUSTINE, Larchmont, New York November 22, 2020 CHRIST THE KING QUOTE FROM THE PASTOR The Son of Man will sit upon his glorious throne and he will separate them one from another. Matthew 11:9 Pastor s Corner A HIGHER DOMINION Throughout the Gospels, Jesus resists false or premature adulation. Yet the plotline bears inexorably toward the acclamation of Christ as King. We hear hints of it in Matthew s final judgment scene. But before Jesus crucifixion, it is Pilate who gets straight to the point: Are you the king of the Jews? The unfolding of events that day makes it clear: yes, in Jesus we have a king. A king who is crowned (with thorns), who is robed in a royal mantle (for the sake of derision), who receives a scepter into his hands (the reed of contempt). Behold the king, face-to-face with the uncloaked rulers of the world, the powers of selfishness, fear, and brutality. Behold the king who endures humiliation and mockery rather than stooping to fight with the weapons of the world. Behold the king, fighting under the banner of his Father s mercy. In a few weeks, we will witness our King receiving homage from the Magi at a crib in a stable. In today s Gospel, we learn other places where he must receive homage: behind the bars of a lonely prison cell, in the places where the homeless and disdained congregate, in boardrooms and offices where decisions are made about the fate of struggling and vulnerable people. To proclaim Christ as King is to raise a banner of resilient and victorious mercy above the powers of this world. There indeed exists a higher dominion that binds and embraces us. Every other nation, rule, or governing power is but an echo of his merciful, glorious kingdom. Justin Bartkus. Give Us This Day November 2020 SECOND COLLECTION NOVEMBER 22nd CATHOLIC CHARITIES Please be generous in this week s second collection for the Catholic Charities Campaign for Charity and Justice. REDIRECT CHRISTMAS 2020 For over 40 years, ReDirect Christmas has been one of the special parish traditions at St. Augustine Church. It is a great way of giving a charitable gift in the name of people on our Christmas lists instead of traditional store bought gifts. The organizations chosen this year are: School Sisters of Notre Dame Educational Center Woodhaven, New York Since 2004, the School Sisters of Notre Dame Educational Center has served about 125 economically disadvantaged women (at least 95% are immigrants) per year in three programs: High School equivalency preparation, English as a Second Language classes, and Outreach. They are grounded in the belief that education means enabling persons to reach the fullness of their potential as individuals created in God s image and assisting them to direct their gifts toward building the earth. tuition is free and totally dependent on individual donations and grants. St. Peter Catholic Elementary School Yonkers, New York The pandemic has forced the school to postpone or cancel major fundraising efforts making the need for the children more than any time before. A values-based Catholic education is vital to form students into people who are prepared to enact change and live successful lives of service. In order to support the students and keep up with technology needs, 50 Chrome Books are needed for the students. Please make checks payable to St. Augustine Church and add ReDirect Christmas to the memo section of the check and send to 18 Cherry Avenue, Larchmont, NY Details and gift cards are available at the entrance of the church. For more information call the rectory at or abetkowski@staugustineny.org. CHRISTMAS MASS SCHEDULE Registration will be required to attend the Christmas Masses. Capacity is 75 to 100 people.
