3 Honors Orientation Goals At the end of today s session, you will: Be able to identify the four pillars of the Honors mission Have a basic idea about how Honors works Know how the minimum number of credits to take to stay on pace Know the Honors address if you have any questions or concerns

4 Honors Mission Statement Honors provides a community of scholars within a large urban research institution. It is the mission of Honors to promote informed, engaged citizenship as the foundation for academic excellence in a diverse global setting. The Honors experience is founded on four pillars: Community, Service, Research, and Career.

5 Good Standing with the Honors College Need to maintain a 3.30 or better cumulative GPA to be in good standing with the Honors College Continue progress towards completing University Honors average 9 honors credits a year The Honors Commitment entails graduation with University Honors

6 What is University Honors? Program Major Co-Major BS in Business Administration (BSBA_UG_BA) Accounting (ACC) University Honors (Co-Major) (COUH) A Co-Major To graduate with University Honors you must complete a total of 36 credits in Honors courses, including HON 1000, PS 1010 Honors, a servicelearning course, at least one Honors 42XX level Seminar, and an Honors thesis.

9 Honors Classes Honors sections tend to be smaller in size and are usually taught by full-time faculty members. Each Honors class is noted individually on your transcript. Special sections of a course: Some sections of a class, such as P S 1010, are marked Only open to Honors Students, or Must have a 3.30 or higher. Sometimes earns additional credit for Honors students. Honors courses: These have a subject area code of HON. HON 1000: The City HON 4998: Honors Thesis, HON 4990: Directed Study, HON 42XX: Honors Seminar. Honors option: Courses 2000-level or above that are taught by full-time faculty may be enhanced and count as Honors credit.

12 Being a full-time student Most students will register for between credits (3-4 classes) When estimating study time, 1 cr = 1 hour in class + 2 hr. study time (MINIMUM). You may have as few as two or three classes, but no more than 18 credits Not all of your classes will be Honors.

Departments run their own honors sections so if you run into a registration issue for an honors section outside of an HON course, you will need to contact that department.
