21 Reflective Roofs reduce Heat Island Effect and decrease the need for cooling

22 High performance low emissivity glass reflects heat out in the summer and reflects heat in in the winter.

23 Daylight Harvesting uses a lighting control system with sensors that turn off light fixtures when there is enough daylight in the building.

24 Low-flow faucets reduce the amount of water used and automatic sensors ensure that the water is cut off shortly after use.

25 Waterfree Urinals use a trap sealed by a special solution that is lighter than liquids that pass through it. A flush-type urinal can use 40,000 gallons of water in a single year.

26 Dual Flush Toilets provide options for more or less water per flush.

33 The Pulper grinds waste from the dishwashing areas and pumps a slurry to the extractor where water is extracted from the mix. This reduces food waste leaving the facility by 85%.

47 Recycling Results! Vanderbilt University recycled the following materials from our solid waste stream for 2008: VU Campus + VUMC 203 tons of paper 350 tons of confidential paper 527 tons of cardboard 6 tons of aluminum 32 tons of plastic 1,118 tons TOTAL recyclables

Vanderbilt University recycled the following universal waste materials in 2008: VU Campus + VUMC 32,000 fluorescent light bulbs 6,700 lbs batteries >155,000 lbs (77.5 tons) of VU computers and electronics At the May 2008 Electronics Recycling Event hosted by Vanderbilt, >500,000 lbs of electronics were recycled.

52 ThinkOne Energy Conservation Project Goal of 15% reduction in overall energy consumption, or 54 million KwH and 63,130 metric tons of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions savings annually. Current educational outreach is to faculty and staff on main campus, then residential students, research faculty and staff, and patient care areas. Initial Phase I is complete. s/articles are planned throughout 2009 as educational outreach for ThinkOne campaign around temperature control, lighting, computers and equipment, and research energy savings. Obama s Stimulus package contains appropriations to assist universities with building retrofits and research around energy efficiency and new energy sources.
