2 There is a range of support available to students attending college which is detailed in the Further Education Access Fund Policy This document summarises the bursaries available, the broad requirements and subsequent payment schedules. For detailed entitlements students must refer to the above policy which is available on the intranet or contact the Access Fund Office, Orange Bursaries It should be noted that all bursaries require a student to have an attendance record of at least 90%*, be up-to-date with all course work/assignments and receive a satisfactory tutor report. * NB the attendance threshold is set at 90% acknowledging that students may not be able to achieve 100% attendance. The Rewards Scheme does however seek to reward students attending College. Therefore the attendance records for the Bursary Scheme do not differentiate between authorised and unauthorised absence. Rewards Bursary The student Cash for College scheme rewards students with cash for attending college. All full-time students aged are eligible for a cash reward of 100 (to be paid in February 2015) We will pay your cash reward into your personal bank account; if you haven t already got a bank account, you will need to set one up. All full-time students aged are eligible for a cash reward of 100 to be paid in February Students are automatically entered into this scheme if they are attending a full time course of study at the College. Supplementary Bursary All full-time students aged with a household income below 26,000 may be eligible for a supplementary payment of 200 ( 100 November 2014 and 100 February 2015) This is in addition to the Cash for College Reward Bursary. To be considered for this award students need to submit an application form to the Access Fund Office with the appropriate evidence.
3 Cash for College Reward 19+ Bursary If you are an adult aged 19 or over when you start your full-time course with a household income below 26,000 may be eligible for a cash reward of 300 ( 100 November 2014 and 200 February 2015). To be considered for this award students need to submit an application form to the Access Fund Office with the appropriate evidence. 24+ Bursary If you have been approved for a full 24+ Advanced Learner Loan through Student Finance England for your tuition fees, with a household income below 21,000 you may be eligible for a cash reward of up to 300 ( 150 November 2014 and 150 February 2015). To be considered for this award students need to submit an application form to the Access Fund Office with the appropriate evidence. How to apply To apply for your cash reward go to: or alternatively contact the Access Fund on or access.fund@newdur.ac.uk for an application form. Guaranteed Bursary Students who are in care, care leavers, people in receipt of income support or the equivalent Universal Credit in their own right or young people getting both Disability Living Allowance (or the new Personal Independence Payments) and Employment Support Allowance (ESA) (or Universal Credit as a replacement for ESA) in their own right may be eligible to receive a bursary of up to 1,200* ( 400 November 2014, February and June 2015). To be considered for this award students need to submit an application form to the Access Fund Office with the appropriate evidence. *This bursary cannot be combined with the Cash for College Rewards. In calculating the bursary, consideration will be taken of benefits already received from the College such as Flex and Travel; the cost of which will be deducted from the bursary.

Tutor Reports Available Monday 3rd November Tutor Reports Deadline Friday 14th November Payment Friday 28th November Review Up until Friday 12th December Final Payment Friday 19th December February Payment Guaranteed, Rewards, Supplementary, 19+ and 24+ Bursaries. Tutor Reports Available Monday 2nd February Tutor Reports Deadline Friday 13th February Payment Friday 27th February Review Up until Friday 20th March Final Payment Friday 27th March June Payment Guaranteed Bursary. Tutor Reports Available Monday 1st June Tutor Reports Deadline Friday 19th June Payment Friday 26th June 2015.
5 Assistance with Childcare Students aged Students aged may be eligible to apply for the Government s Care to Learn scheme. If you are a parent (mother or father) and you are caring for your own child(ren) and you use an Ofsted-registered childcare provider, you may be eligible for up to 175 per child per week. Adults aged 20+ Money will be allocated to support childcare costs for students who can demonstrate hardship. All students aged 20 or over must apply direct to the College for assistance with childcare, contact the Access Fund on or access.fund@newdur.ac.uk for an application form. For further information go to or contact ASC (Advice, Support, Careers) on or asc@newdur.ac.uk. Free meals The College will provide free meals to students enrolled on a full time course, aged or between 19 and 25, subject to Learning Difficulty Assessment (LDA) or Education Health and Care Plan (EHC Plan) who meet the eligibility criteria outlined in the policy. This will generally apply to students previously in receipt of free school meals. To receive support for the free meals scheme the student, or their parent/guardian, must submit an application to the Access Fund Office with the appropriate evidence.
6 Travel for all full-time students aged New College Durham has teamed up with Arriva and Go North East to bring you Flex & Travel for all full-time further education students. You can use your bus tickets to attend College during term-time throughout the academic year, until the end of the summer term. FREE travel to and from College Flex & Travel offers you travel to and from College on weekdays during term time only, on services operated by Arriva or Go North East, depending on your ticket choice. Although we have outlined the key terms and conditions of the Flex and Travel Scheme in this guide, you should check with each bus operator for more information. Flexible Study Flex & Travel lets you select the transport options which best suit your studies at College. You can only use your bus ticket between College and your home address during the academic term, please see terms and conditions at the back of this guide for details. Qualifying criteria for all students All students will need to meet the College s qualifying requirements of: Attending a full-time further education course Living at least 3 miles from the College Having an good attendance record Having a satisfactory tutor report and being up-to-date with all course work/assignments Having satisfactory behaviour both at the College and whilst travelling on Arriva/Go North East transport Any grants or bursaries received from the Government, Council or other bodies for transport must be utilised in full prior to any support provided by the College. All full-time students aged living in County Durham If you are a new or current full-time student and you meet the College qualifying requirements, you will be eligible for free travel. Apply now To apply for Flex and Travel go to: and complete the Flex and Travel online application form, alternatively contact the Access Fund Administrator on or access.fund@newdur.ac.uk for an application form. You must also apply to your chosen bus operator. All full-time students aged living outside County Durham If you live outside County Durham, you must apply to your Local Education Authority for any travel subsidy available. New College Durham will then reimburse the difference of the cost of your bus tickets.
7 Applying to your chosen bus operator If you live in County Durham, as well as applying to the College for the Flex and Travel scheme, you also need to apply to your chosen bus operator for your travel ticket. How to get your student travel ticket with Arriva If you live in County Durham and you have chosen Arriva your student travel will be a Student Saver ticket. You can download an application form by clicking on the students section at co.uk, or request an application form from the customer services team on Once the College has confirmed your eligibility with Arriva, your Student Saver ticket will be issued by Arriva and sent directly to your home address. How to get your student travel ticket with Go North East If you live in County Durham and you have chosen Go North East your student travel will include a Get Around ticket which is credited onto a Get Around key smartcard, which also acts as ID. To apply for your Get Around key smartcard, you can complete an online application form at or call the customer services team on Once the College has confirmed your eligibility with Go North East, your Get Around key smartcard will be remotely credited by Go North East. Travel for all full-time students aged 19+ If you are an adult aged19 years or over at the start of your full-time further education course, New College Durham may reimburse the cost of your bus tickets. You will need to meet College qualifying requirements which will include an assessment of household income. Students receiving 24+ Advanced Learner Loans If you have been approved for a full 24+ Advanced Learner Loan through Student Finance England for your tuition fees New College Durham may reimburse the cost of your bus tickets. You will need to meet College qualifying requirements which will include an assessment of household income. Go to for more information. How to apply All students must apply direct to the College for free travel assistance, contact the Access Fund on or access.fund@newdur.ac.uk for an application form.
8 Terms and conditions Travel for all full-time students aged All students will need to meet the College s qualifying requirements of: o o o o o o Living at least 3 miles from the College Attending a full-time further education course Having a satisfactory attendance record Having a satisfactory tutor report and being up-to-date with all course work/assignments Having satisfactory behaviour both at the College and whilst travelling on Arriva/ Go North East transport Any grants or bursaries received from the Government, Council or other bodies for transport must be utilised in full prior to any support provided by the College. Flex & Travel does not apply to students aged 19+, apprentices, part-time further education students or students on higher education programmes. If a student fails to attend College, without notification for 4 weeks, the College will suspend the travel ticket. Travel is only permitted to and from College during term time weekdays. Minimum connecting times apply between services if you have to change buses to and from College. The student bus ticket remains the property of Arriva/Go North East and will not be valid if you no longer attend the College. Your ticket must be returned to New College Durham if you no longer attend your course. Failure to do so may result in individuals incurring the ongoing costs of the ticket. The College will only make payment(s) for term time, weekday travel to and from College each term up to the cost of a termly or academic year ticket. The College will not refund the cost of any tickets purchased prior to the receipt of your termly or academic year ticket. All student bus tickets will be issued by Arriva or Go North East. Travel is only permitted on Arriva or Go North East within the regions/boundaries outlined by each bus operator. If you wish to travel outside these areas, or with other travel operators, normal ticket prices apply. These tickets are not covered by the Flex and Travel scheme. Travel on both Arriva and Go North East are subject to the operators normal terms and conditions. The operators retain the right to refuse travel. You will be responsible for paying for the costs of any replacement bus tickets. You are only eligible for one annual bus pass (or termly equivalent) for the academic year
