2 FEFU s mission and target model University Mission Statement: To contribute to the cooperation and understanding between the Asia-Pacific Region countries, their social and cultural prosperity, and the young men s individual development by means of education, enlightenment, scientific knowledge augmentation and creation of new technologies To develop research aimed at increasing intellectual, innovative and economic capacity of Russia and Asia- Pacific countries in cooperation with the best research, education and innovative structures from Russia and Asia- Pacific economies To collaborate with different business enterprises within regional innovative programs and modern education standards based on research combined with education process To contribute to intellectual, spiritual, and physical development of students, open up their potential, deliver best professional trainings providing students with the required professional competencies and skills, career building strategies, leadership and personal development, encouraging them to renew and deepen their knowledge in the course of a lifetime within the most dynamic region of Russia To provide a world-class education level for the graduates to be competitive and able to work in the highest positions in science, business, politics, government management, to promote integration of graduates to scientific, business and various professional communities of Russia and APR countries providing for the best use of acquired knowledge and skills To improve quality of education services, promote faculty competence through professional development training, participation in national and international research conferences and expeditions 2
3 FEFU s geopolitical environment Economic concentration areas of Russia, EU and Japan (GRP per sq. km) If you mentally outline around Vladivostok agglomeration (its core - the city of Vladivostok and Artem) a circle with a radius of 1,000 km, then more than 414 million people (of whom nearly 300 million in urban areas) reside in this area, the share of the population of Vladivostok just over 0.1 %. Vladivostok is the only city in Russia with such a powerful environment. For example, around Moscow at the same distance there are about 100 million people. FEFU top strategic objective up to 2020 is to become a leading scientific, educational and innovative center to provide Russia with territorial efficiency in the Asia-Pacific Region. 4 FEFU s SWOT-analysis Strenghs Correspondence of the FEFU goals and mission objectives with the priorities of economic reforms of the Russian Far East in all areas and spheres of activity; The availability of an educational, scientific, social and cultural potential A good level of resource support of the mission, goals and objectives Availability the developed concept and development programs of the university Effective electronic document management system Sufficient scientific capacity to address current scientific and technical problems of the region Supervision of all activities on the basis of the Electronic University (Smart- Campus) The desire for international accreditation of educational programs Weaknesses Limited resources for funding strategic aims and tasks Inadequate IT competency of faculty members Low number of international joint degree programs Lack of funding for research of post-graduate students Low participation in international grant competitions Opportunities The implementation of industrial and innovation strategy of the South of the Far East Russia The interest of international education organizations, and foreign universities in collaboration A good level of possible integration of the industrial potential of the region with the educational, scientific and innovative potential of the university Public recognition of the University as a center of education and training Conditions which have been created to enhance the educational and intellectual level of the students (library fund, various institutional arrangements, etc.) Expansion of logistics capabilities, creating the most favorable conditions for training (academic, administrative, sport, cultural and leisure infrastructure of the university) The presence of international partners and their involvement in the training process at the university s graduate and doctoral programs, as well as in the implementation of teaching in English of the core courses of Masters programs Threats Global economic crisis and its impact on the educational infrastructure Instability of individual, small and middle-size business funding the tuition fees Negative demography in Russia and especially the Russian Far East, affecting the enrollments Insufficient initiative of faculty members in research grant competitions and project development of applied research Increasing competition from other HEIs 4
5 FEFU Today Total number of FEFU s students is over , 10% of them are the students outside the Russian Far Eastern region and foreigners. The share of graduate and postgraduate (Master & Ph.D.) students in the total number of FEFU students is 8%. The basis for a admission of graduate and post-graduate students is formed predominantly by FEFU s graduates (including graduates of previous years). The share of international students in the total number of students is 5%. The University has identified six priority areas for development, on the basis of which there were started the formation of professional competence centers (centers of excellence). The proportion of graduates who find jobs outside of the Russian Federation, is in the range of 5-7%. FEFU s Schools implement over 70 programs of continuing professional education The number of academic staff is 3300, which account for about of annual research publications indexed in Scopus, Web of Science. Average citation index articles per faculty. The share of foreign professors, teachers and researchers working for FEFU, is about 3.5%. Far Eastern Federal University is the only university representing Russia in the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU). FEFU has a developed Russian language and culture center f or international students. 5
