3 FROM the CIRCUIT SUPERINTENDENT: I need an article for the next Circuit News said Margaret. I m sure you do I replied but I ve got Shingles and for the last two and a half weeks haven t been able to sit down or stand up, be still or move, without pain** and, frankly, that is all I can think about. What do you expect me to write? You could write about pain and suffering she suggested. Now that was an interesting thought for a number of reasons. First of all, pain is not a subject that we normally discuss we would rather not talk about it in the hope that if we do not talk about it then it will not bother us! Yet, as I remember reading many years ago, it is one of the things we have in common as human beings that virtually everybody will suffer severe pain at sometime in their lives some more, some less, but some! Secondly, it is also one of the most often quoted objections to Christian belief How can you possibly believe in a good-god when there is so much innocent suffering in the world? I guess that all of us have, at some time or another, said or thought how can it be that somebody as good as that should suffer so much. Suffering, especially innocentsuffering, does indeed challenge most of what we want to believe about God and about how the world should be! Thirdly, and rather paradoxically, life without suffering does exist and it is a living hell! There are just a few people who, for odd genetic reasons, simply do not suffer pain and they live in constant danger. They do not realize when they are accidentally cutting themselves, or they pick up dangerously hot items without realizing, they can break bones and continue to use them without thought, compounding the damage etc. Conversely, some of the most deadly cancers are those that give no symptoms until they are almost too far advanced to treat. Pain is, in fact, one of our most important responses helping us cope with the reality of life and living! Pain is one of the most important facts-of-life. Next I must apologise to any of you who have read this far hoping for some simple answer to the problem of pain. Sorry I just do not have one! Can I, however, make two observations? The first is that nowhere does God promise us life without pain. In fact, it is a very necessary mercy in giving us guidance in a world where we face so many choices and alternatives. It is also a central part of the Christian message that Jesus knew and accepted pain where this was necessary to fulfil his life s ministry and we still intensely honour those who do the same just think of Remembrance Day! Pain is part of life, the real problem is what we make of it. That brings me to the second observation, that it gives us a insight into the reality of the Kingdom of Heaven which, as Jesus said, is between us that is, it is found in our relationships with each other. I have been most greatly supported by all the sympathy, encouragement, concern and offers of help (some needed, some not) I have received. Thank you all so very much, I have much to be grateful for and have learnt much from you about the Kingdom. And now I have been sitting rather too long and must try standing for a while! Every blessing, Jeff **from which you can deduce which part of me was most affected! 1910 Centenary Weekend at Stibbard Methodist Church Centre 2010 Our Centenary Weekend - 1 & 2 May - was a wonderful success. The Saturday night launch of our website was well attended - Daniel, our web builder, took us through the site, explaining the different parts and how they work. We had 108 hits up to 1st May and are pleased that two were with prayer requests. The website introduction was followed by refreshments. The Sunday Service, taken by Rev Rosemary Wakelin because Jeff was ill, was a full house. 3

Labrador Retriever + Curly Coated Retriever = Lab Coat Retriever, the choice of research scientists. Newfoundland + Basset Hound = Newfound Asset Hound, a dog for financial advisors.
