1 About College of Education Sam Houston State University is oldest teacher training institution in state of Texas with approved teacher education programs. College of Education (COE) is one of six colleges that make up University. Within COE, education programs are offered in each of five departments, directly or indirectly involved in public education. five departments are: (1) Curriculum and Instruction, (2) Educational Leadership and Counseling, (3) Health and Kinesiology, (4) Language, Literacy, and Special Populations, and (5) Library Science. Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Programs in COE offer undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, certificate, masters, and doctorate programs. Programs may be reviewed by Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB), University of Collegiate Education Administration (UCEA), or ors; accredited by Sourn Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), or, National Council for College of Education, Preparation Program is accredited by National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and State Board for Certification (SBEC) through Texas Accountability System. Sixteen of educator preparation programs in College of Education have earned highest category of national recognition, earning distinction for ir impact on K-12 student learning and retention in field. All programs devoted to instruction and preparation of PK-16 learners are accredited by a special program association (SPA) specific to program. Education programs are also offered in three colleges within University, but outside COE, College of Sciences (COS), College of Fine Arts and Mass Communication (CFAMC), and College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS). Department of Curriculum and Instruction offers ability to pursue a Middle Level Education Certification Program leading to Bachelor of Science degree (B.S.) with a major in Interdisciplinary Studies. student picks one of three areas in MLE Program in which to concentrate. Undergraduate Degrees for Teaching 4th-8th: Teaching: Grades 4-8, with teaching field in Math, Math / Science, or English Language Arts/ Social Studies. 6 Interdisciplinary Studies (EC - 6th) Students interested in teaching grades 8-12 will major in preferred subject (teaching field) and will minor in Secondary Education. Teacher Candidates should: Select a major to serve as a teaching content area Select a minor in secondary education that includes 24 semester hours including six hours of student teaching Complete a majority of ir content area courses before beginning certification course work.
