1 About Employment and Wage Data This file provides employment and payroll information about Alaska and its local areas. Its intent is to assist businesses, nonprofit agencies, governments and the public in assessing the level of economic activity in Alaska. This information provides a framework for analyzing local area economies and is part of a standard method of reporting economic data approved by the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics. Sources of employment and wage data include: Quarterly employer reports of wages and employment mandated by the State of Alaska s unemployment insurance laws. Quarterly federal agency reports made in connection with the state-administered program for unemployed federal workers. Supplemental data gathered by Research and Analysis staff to augment the quarterly collection of employment and payroll data. Excluded groups Certain segments of Alaska s employed population are excluded from unemployment insurance coverage, and no ongoing method of collecting employment and payroll information is available for these individuals. Research and Analysis acknowledges the importance of this economic activity, but has no reliable method to augment the data published here. The largest segments of the employed population excluded from these data include: Self-employed individuals Fishers Unpaid family help Domestics Most individuals engaged in agriculture Industry and area coding Establishments are classified by industry in conformity with the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) NAICS is a system that groups establishments into industries based on the activities in which they are primarily engaged. NAICS was developed to provide common industry definitions for Canada, Mexico, and the United States, and to identify additional industries for new and emerging activities (for example, electronic auctions and Internet service providers). NAICS replaced the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system. Area data are published for the twenty-eight census areas defined by the U.S. Department of Commerce. A firm s area designation is based on the firm s last reported work-site address. When employers have establishments located in more than one area, separate employment and payroll reports are obtained for each location in which an employer operates. When this is not possible, employment and earnings are reported in the area of the employer s major activity. A review of each firm s industry and area code is performed by Research and Analysis on a four-year rotating cycle. Changes to industry or area codes that are noneconomic in nature are incorporated into the data in January of each year. Industry and area code changes determined by Research and Analysis staff to be economic in nature occur as of the date of the economic event. Technical Definitions

2 AVERAGE MONTHLY WAGES: Obtained by dividing total wages by 12 and then by average monthly employment INDUSTRIAL CLASSIFICATION: The North American Industrial Classification System Manual, 2007 edition, is used to code all establishments UNCLASSIFIED ESTABLISHMENTS: Includes firms which cannot be classified in any other industry MONTHLY EMPLOYMENT: Represents a count of jobs as opposed to individual workers. It is not an unduplicated count of the number of individuals because workers holding more than one job or who change jobs during the measuring timeframe (the pay period that includes the 12th of the month) may be reported by more than one employer. TOTAL WAGES: All remuneration paid to workers during the quarter/year, including commissions, bonuses, and other gratuities when paid in connection with the job. Wages may include remuneration for work done in previous time periods since date of payment rather than date of service is the determining factor. Confidential Data Wage data for industries with fewer than three firms or in which one firm employs more than eighty percent of total industry employment are confidential and left blank in this file. Prior to July 1, 1996 employment data meeting these same criteria were also confidential. Wage data in some categories are also suppressed to prevent the user from being able to ascertain confidential data by simple subtraction. The categories selected for this purpose are those with the second smallest earnings in that group. Further, a category that has zero employment does not necessarily have zero wages since remuneration (bonuses, wages, salaries) can be paid in the months following the months of actual employment. Changes to Borough or Census Area Geography Beginning in the third quarter 2007, the former Skagway-Hoonah-Angoon census area is being published in two parts: 1) the Municipality of Skagway, and 2) the Hoonah- Angoon Census area
