6 DIPLOMA IN 3D ANIMATION LEVEL 6 Qualification Aim The aim of this qualification is to build the skills necessary to enter the digital media industry. By the end of study, students will have developed a strong foundation in design applicable to various areas of computer graphics content creation, including animation, filming, postproduction, or game development. Qualification Outcome Statement To provide foundational skills in 3D Animation and to provide the basis for entry into further study. Qualification Delivery The qualification is 120 credits in length which equates to approximately 1200 hours of lectures, study, assignments and examination time. Career Pathways This qualification may lead to employment as a rigging artist, modelling artist, compositor, VFX artist, concept artist, lighting artist or animator within a variety of organisations. These organisations may include studios involved in computer gaming, feature film, television, advertising, print and product visualisation. Intake Dates February, July This programme is delivered for ten months on the EDENZ Colleges Auckland City Campus. 7 Courses Pre-Production of Digital Media This course covers the pre-production stages involved in digital content creation. Topics include: storyboarding, character and environment design, camera work, composition and layout. Drawing techniques are developed, exploring perspective, form and tonality. Students are taught digital painting skills and techniques, with an emphasis on speed painting and matte painting. Motion Graphics This course examines aspects of design and visual development in a time-based context. Students learn to create powerful sequences of graphics in motion, whilst learning about typography, editing and tracking, plus rotoscoping and visual layout and composition through time. Modelling This course thoroughly covers 3D modelling techniques and tools. Students evaluate a variety of methodologies, including polygon modelling, brush-based modelling and detailing, and mechanical surface modelling. Students learn to sculpt a range of content digitally and also to build efficient meshes over high resolution surfaces. The module is rounded off with lessons on presentation techniques. Look Development This course enables students to demonstrate an understanding of colour theory in their artwork, augmenting the mood of a character or scene by focusing on use of textures, properties of light, and color interactions. Some of the key topics in the course include digital lighting, physically based rendering, natural light phenomena, UV mapping and procedural texture creation. Animation This course provides a pathway into the rich world of key-framed 3D animation. Students research all the classical principles of how animation works, and practice all the techniques available to an animator, completing multiple exercises on a day to day basis, from walk cycles to dialog, from acting and using motion reference to procedural animation. Introduction to Game Development This course introduces students to game development. The main concepts covered revolve around interactive character implementation and level assembly. Students aiming to increase their awareness of game structure and their ability to abstractly design gameplay will be pleased by this course, which provides a great testing ground for skills already established in design, modeling, texturing and animating. CG Showcase This course provides students with an opportunity to revisit a particular feature of their prior coursework in anticipation of showing excellence in a specialization. CG Showcase fosters strong production habits, such as time management, scheduling, progress reports and presentation skills, looking ahead to the next year of advanced learning. Being from their own design, the result from the CG Showcase allows students to evaluate and celebrate their creative achievement.

11 Courses Advanced Rigging and Scripting This course covers rigging tools, techniques and theory. Students analyse character needs and design intuitive and complex animation rigs. Programming fundamentals are covered and applied within multiple CG contexts. Topics covered are: transforms, connections, constraints, parenting, scripting, syntax and structure, procedures, UI design and best practices. Post-Production During this course students will gain an advanced understanding of compositing and integration techniques using node base compositing software to enhance images and grow an understanding of the post production process. Camera and lens effects, pipeline workflows, basic photography, render passes, photo tricks and process optimization are all taught during this module. Advanced Animation This course encourages students to improve their animation skills by focusing on fine details of motion such as expression and body language. Students learn to create performances using facial animation controls and develop strong analysis skills. Integrating characters into a dynamic scene and telling a story visually is also a major feature of this course. Dynamics Utilizing industry leading and award winning simulation software, under the leadership of an experienced technical director, students will create powerful effects based on explosions, fire, smoke, water and much more. Group Project Students will perform their roles according to industry expectations and deadlines, creating an energy and urgency similar to real world work life. Achieving great visuals is everyone s goal. Working as a group increases the standard of output for the project even more. Production Project For each student the outcome of the entire course is a show reel that demonstrates their creative and technical skills. The knowledge acquired during study at EDENZ Colleges is accumulated in this final module. Supported by their tutors and peers, each student puts together the best representation of their core study efforts. This gathers, their explorations and group work, and their personal insights, developing packaged content to represent themselves in the field.

15 3D ANIMATION CAMPS Duration 5 days Dates April July September - 2 October 2015 Sign up for EDENZ Colleges Digital Media Animation Camp and experience life in the fast lane of the animation industry you ll get to spend five intense days learning the basics of 3D, utilising award winning software packages taught by expert tutors. You ll have a go at modelling, lighting, rendering and key frame animation. To top it all off you ll end up by working on your own animation project to take home with you. We have a close and unique relationship with Huhu Studios (Snells Beach, Guangzhou, Beijing & Taipei) which is located on site at our Snells Beach Campus. Industry connections are important to us and we have had recent visits from the following studios: Weta Digital, Yukfoo, Oktobor, Gameloft and Darkroom. The guest speakers from these studios provide our students with insight into the latest trends, encouragement to higher success and critique of their work. 22 LIVE & STUDY WITH US Accommodation has a major role to play in a student s experienceat EDENZ Colleges. Accommodation is arranged as a fixed term package, including food (Snells Beach Campus only). Accommodation must be separately applied for and booked in advance. This arrangement gives confidence and security to students. Any alternative arrangements or approval of changes can only be made with the agreement of campus management. 24 HOW TO ENROL DOMESTIC STUDENTS STEP 1 Complete the EDENZ Colleges Application form online or by downloading from the College website. Include: I. A certified copy of your current passport or birth certificate. II. Proof of prior education & learning (tertiary and secondary school academic transcripts) outlining your previous training (school or other training courses, polytechnic, university) within the last five years. III. One-page essay about why you would like to study at EDENZ Colleges. IV. Also refer to the Entry Criteria on pages in the main EDENZ Colleges Prospectus for additional requirements specific to your programme of study. STEP 2 Complete online or your completed application pack to: registrar@edenz.ac.nz or post to: EDENZ Colleges Registrar PO Box Mt Eden Auckland 1446 A letter of offer is made to successful applicants. STEP 3 Student applies for a student loan (if applicable) through StudyLink when their offer of place letter has been received. The Application Form (and Accommodation Application if applicable) must be signed by a parent or legal guardian for students aged under 18 years at the programme start date. Complete the EDENZ College Application forms, and include: a) A certified copy of your current passport. b) Proof of Prior Education & Learning (tertiary and secondary school academic transcripts) outlining your previous training (school or other training courses, polytechnic, university) within the last five years. c) Reference letters as written by previous employers, tutors or personal associates. Referees may be contacted. d) International Students must provide evidence of suitable English proficiency i.e. a certified IELTS document showing relevant score as required for the course you have chosen to apply for. e) Also refer to the Entry Criteria on pages in the main EDENZ Colleges Prospectus for additional requirements specific to your programme of study. STEP 2 STEP 3 Apply for a student visa. Visit STEP 4 Once visa is approved in principle by Immigration pay the programme fees. Include payment for Medical and Travel insurance to cover the full length of your stay or purchase your own. STEP 5 EDENZ Colleges will send a receipt of payment for you to send to immigration to get your visa. STEP 6 Book your flights and contact our student support services studentservices@edenz.ac.nz with your arrival time and date. STEP 7 Contact EDENZ when you have arrived and make arrangements for your orientation and introduction to the course. Bring your original passport with you. A letter of offer is sent to you for provisional entry. 26 DIGITAL MEDIA ACADEMY TEAM Manuel Pina Visual Effects, Post Production and Animation Manuel has a Bachelor of Graphic Design and Advanced Diploma in Animation. He has worked for 7 years in graphic design and broadcasting whose clients include HBO, Discovery Channel and Nickelodeon. In Totuma Communications and Design he worked as a technical director in motion graphics and has had his work published. Tom Mooney Game Development Tom is a game artist with a background in teaching UDK, 3ds Max and design for computer graphics. In 2012, a UK publisher, Packt, released two technical books Tom wrote on Unreal Development Kit and 3ds Max modelling. He has over ten years professional experience doing CG in studios in New Zealand, Russia, England, Australia, and has taught in South Korea and Malaysia.
27 Simon Jackson Lighting, Rendering, Compositing and Dynamics After starting off his career as a lighting artist, Simon progressed to teaching at one of the best animation schools in India. Simon has also worked as a freelance artist for many animated shorts, television commercials and feature films as well as a Creative Visualiser in an advertisement agency in India. Jared Wikeepa Modelling, Concept Art and Visual effects Jared has a Bachelor of Media Arts - Digital Design from Waikato Institute of Technology. His artistic skills have been seen in commissioned work for the Hamilton Community Centre, interactive ipad applications, and pitch book illustrations for a proposed feature film. Johnny Knight Rigging, Scripting and Modelling Johnny loves 3D Animation and is passionate about teaching it. He has specialised in rigging and modelling in Autodesk Maya, and is also proficient in Adobe Flash, Photoshop and After Effects. He will teach you how to efficiently model and rig characters, props and environments that you have designed!
28 QUESTIONS & ANSWERS What is required for my portfolio? A portfolio of 4-6 pieces of artwork are required for entry into Level 6. You are welcome to use your work from a short course you have attended. Entry into Year Two will require 5-6 pieces of art work, a show reel, relevant industry experience or successful completion of the EDENZ Diploma in 3D Animation or equivalent from another provider. Are EDENZ qualifications NZQA approved? Yes EDENZ is a category 1 provider, registered with NZQA. The courses are approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) under the provisions of the Education Act 1989 and EDENZ is accredited to teach them. Are students able to access Student Loan and Allowance for EDENZ qualifications? Yes. EDENZ is a fully accredited provider and our courses attract both loans and allowances from StudyLink for eligible students. How do you support students to get jobs? We work with our students to help them put a CV and show reel together that shows of their talents and skills. We help students learn how to succeed in interviews and in pitching ideas to clients. Our students are often head hunted by studios and companies looking for skilled graduates. Through EDENZ careers department we connect with these companies and recommend students who may be interested in full time and work experience opportunities. We have a high employment success rate for graduates in their field of study. What software do you use? We use the latest cutting edge software that are used in studios throughout NZ and the world. We use software such as Autodesk Maya, Houdini, Adobe After Effects and ZBrush. Can I study this course extramurally? Currently we do not provide this course extramurally. What level is the Diploma in 3D Animation? EDENZ Digital Media Academy offers a Diploma in 3D Animation at Level 6 and an Advanced Diploma at Level 7. Each year is separate so students who graduate after 1 year receive a qualification.
29 What are the career opportunities? This qualification provides students with the skills necessary to be successful in the digital content industry. Students are provided with the skills to work in a variety of areas such as animation film production, advertising production or television content production. What computers do you use? Microsoft Windows based PCs. Are there any other costs associated with this course? Students are provided with a computer with software loaded on. Although not compulsory we recommend students allow $1000/year for course related costs such as a drawing tablet and other equipment. What subjects should I take at school to be prepared for Diploma in 3D Animation? The following subjects (or similar) will help you prepare for this course. Art, Design, Graphics, Media Studies, IT, Computer Studies. Does EDENZ provide accommodation? Students are welcome to apply for accommodation at our Auckland City Campus. Accommodation is limited and application forms are available on our website. So once you ve finished honing your 3D Animation skills with the Digital Media Academy, you may want to think about doing one of our Film and TV Production courses. In fact, many of the experiences you have with the Digital Media Academy (Preproduction, Animation, Light, Colour, Production Project) are directly related to the skills you ll need for work in live action films. Our Applied Filmmaking and TV Production or Certificate in Applied Filmmaking and TV Production will give you in depth knowledge of: Working in a Creative Team Planning and executing Production exercises Scriptwriting Editing Lighting, Sound, Working with Actors Directing, Producing, Legal Issues Our Level 4 Certificate in Applied Filmmaking and TV Production can lead to Higher Education in NZ or overseas (eg. BA/Masters or short courses specializing in particular areas: scriptwriting / producing / directing / Sound / Lighting / etc), or Internships at NZ Production Houses / Equipment Rentals. The Certificate can also lead to employment in NZ or overseas in the Film and Television workforce or collaboration with other Film and Television professionals to help you build up your portfolio.
