4 SIP Development Information School Improvement Timeline The School Improvement Plan is focused on achieving school goals related to Florida School Accountability measures during the current school year. Other goals of the school improvement plan focus on bringing the school into alignment with Monroe County School District s five year strategic plan and as such are planned and measured on a more extended timeline. School Improvement Plan Funding The initiatives and staff development listed in this plan are funded through a variety of sources. Examples include: FTE generated discretionary budget School Professional Development funds Local grants and contributions Evaluation of the School Improvement Plan Specific evaluative information will be collected by the school over the course of the school year and beyond. 5 Response to Intervention Strategies MTSS/RtI is a data based, decision making process that is used to identify academic and behavioral problems and to develop effective interventions for students, at all levels of support. This structured problem solving process involves each of the following steps: Problem Identification Problem Analysis Intervention Development Response to Intervention Examples of RtI include identification of struggling learners within the ninth grade cohort, identification of behavior recidivism, and truancy intervention. 7 Highly Qualified Instructional Staff 98% (45/46) of Coral Shores staff are highly qualified and fully certified in the subject areas to which they are assigned. One teacher is working on obtaining documentation for certification for his single out of field class for Coral Shores instructional staff represents a balanced distribution of teachers relatively new to the profession and teachers with vast instructional experience. We have nine new teachers who are being mentored by trained mentor teachers. Their Professional Learning Community meets monthly throughout the year to share strategies, collaborate, and provide support. All teachers are involved in at least one Professional Learning Community to support the goals in their Professional Growth Plan. Page 7

9 Objective One (Grade Nine Reading) By the end of the school year, 58% (116/201) of Grade 9 students taking the STAR Reading test will maintain or increase proficiency. This represents an increase of 5 percentage points over the Fall screening. Page 9

13 Strategies for Success in Reading 1. Utilize ELL paraprofessional to assist ELL students in core classes. 2. Group ELL students in intensive reading class to acquire reading skills and receive native language assistance in content area courses. 3. Teachers will receive training on accommodations and modifications and legal requirements of the implementation of a student s IEP. 4. ESE teachers will participate in core area Florida Standards implementation PLC s to adapt instructional delivery strategies for students with disabilities in the mainstream and self-contained settings. 5. General Education teachers will be given opportunities to access PEER to view student s accommodations. 6. Teachers will be trained on the model of support facilitation and how to implement with students with and without IEP s. 7. Monthly consultation meetings with teachers on strategies that will assist ESE students succeed in the general education classes. 8. ESE teachers will be added to serve in mainstream classrooms where the highest percentages of students with disabilities are scheduled. 9. Teachers will use Accelerated Reader to target specific skills as determined by screening tests. 10. Teachers will use Achieve 3000 with Level 1 and 2 students. Page 13

Math teachers will participate in a College Preparatory Materials (CPM) Professional Learning Community focused on implementing the mathematical standards of practice across all courses and piloting the adoption of CPM in Algebra, Geometry, and Algebra Algebra classes will utilize Algebra Nation a resource provided by The University of Florida that is aligned to the Algebra end of course expectations. 3. Algebra teachers will utilize STAR math/renaissance Place and Accelerated Math aligned with Algebra end of course expectations to provide formative data. 4. FCTM resources will be shared within the Math PLC. 5. Cross-district collaboration will be used to share developed materials to prepare for new assessments. Page 21

24 Strategies for Success in Writing Page Implement Everybody Writes calendar that will ensure that: Teachers are given training regarding the details of the current Florida Standards Assessment(FSA) rubric and apply the training to their students work Teachers are given training on the Document Based Questions (DBQ) and implement writing assignments aligned with these outcomes during the school year. Teachers are given training on Four Square writing activities, Cornell notes, how to analyze a prompt, and citing text. Teachers are given training on the SAT Writing rubric and implement a writing assignment aligned with these outcomes during the school year. 2. SpringBoard curriculum is used in grades nine and ten and additional training was provided during pre-planning. The SpringBoard curriculum contains a robust system for writing. 3. AVID WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, Reading with Purpose) strategies in grade nine and ten. 4. Focus on argumentative and informative writing across the curriculum. 25 Science Objective One (Biology End of Course Test) By the end of the school year, 87% of students taking the Biology End of Course exam for the first time will perform at level 3 or above. This represents an increase of 3 percentage points over the school year. Strategies for Success in Science 1. Implement data informed instruction model utilizing Performance Matters benchmark testing aligned to Biology end of course test expectations. 2. Science teachers will participate in a writing PLC that will share strategies for preparing students for success on the new Reading and Writing Assessment. Advanced Placement teachers will also focus on writing skill strategies that students need to answer Free Response Questions successfully on AP Exams. 3. Ninth and tenth grade students will participate in district science fair. In eleventh and twelfth grade, students will be encouraged to develop a science fair project, but it will remain optional for them. Development of inquiry/experiment based science fair projects will deepen student understanding of the nature of science. 4. Science fair will give the opportunity for students to strengthen their skills in mathematics, written and oral communications and critical thinking. Page 25

This represents an increase of 30 percentage points over the school year. Graduation Percentage and At-Risk Graduation Percentage 1. Continue to refine the guidance redesign initiative begun in to ensure: Ninth grade students have a dedicated counselor during their ninth grade year Ninth, tenth, and eleventh grade students are provided academic guidance counseling to develop a three year plan for graduating high school college and/or career ready Twelfth grade students have a dedicated college and career counselor monitoring their final year and facilitating placement in post-secondary education and/or the workforce 2. Provide most ninth grade teachers a common teaching area, common planning, and a dedicated ninth grade counselor (Kay MacKenzie) and dedicated ninth grade administrator (Kristy Bedell). 3. Implement lunch time tutoring programs through National Honor Society to assist struggling grade nine students. 4. Implement Freshman Seminar to provide students with study skills, organization habits, character education and goal setting. 5. CAT 5 program is implemented school-wide to target character development, core values of the school, learning activities, and academic success. Page 28

29 6. Full time lab manager facilitates online learning requirement, credit recovery, and online testing requirements. 7. Implement AVID program in grade nine and ten to identify and accelerate students toward academic and AP success. Stretch Learning Objective One (College Readiness - SAT Scores) By the end of the school year the average SAT composite score will be at or above 1600 in critical reading, mathematics, and writing subtests combined. SAT Performance 1. Grade 11 and grade 12 teachers participating in the various Florida Standards focused professional learning communities will align and implement Florida Standards standards for literacy, speaking and listening, and writing in all standard/non AP coursework. 2. 30 Objective Two (College Readiness - ACT Scores) By the end of the school year the percentage of students scoring college ready in all four subject areas will be 40%. This represents a 14% increase over the current year. ACT Performance 1. Grade 11 and Grade 12 teachers participating in the various Common Core focused professional learning communities will align and implement common core standards for literacy, speaking and listening, and writing in all standard/non AP coursework. 2. In preparation for PSAT administration, PSAT practice tests are being utilized in grades Objective Three (Career and Technical Education) During the School Year, Coral Shores High School will align curriculum and resources, so that all Career and Technical course sequences will prepare students to earn industry certification. By the end of the school year 90% of students who complete a Career and Technical sequence will earn a Certificate of Readiness for industry certification from an outside source. Page 30

CTE teachers will become certified (as needed) in the industry certification areas in which they teach. 3. Web Design class converted to online course that meets the online requirement for graduation. Objective Four (AP Participation) By the end of the school year the number of students enrolled in AP courses during a particular school year will increase to 40%*. This represents a 2% increase over the current year. Objective Five (AP Performance) By the end of the school year the percentage of passing scores (3 or higher) on AP exams taken will be greater than or equal to 65%. 33 Advanced Placement Courses 1. Implement A/B scheduling for AP Macroeconomics and AP United States Government and Politics in order to increase AP participation. 2. AP teachers will apply common core delivery strategies in AP classrooms in order to improve student free response question performance. 3. AP Social Science and English Language Arts teachers will collaborate to support both curricula (AP Language and Comp & AP U.S. History, AP World History & English II Honors). 4. Based on success of ninth grade students in AP Human Geography a greater number of grade nine students will be provided the opportunity to take the course. 5. AP Calculus and Pre-Calculus classes will loop with their respective classes providing two years of consistent outcome based instruction. Similar strategies will be used in AP Biology. 6. Add AP Music Theory, AP Spanish, and AP Art studio 7. Offer Dual Enrollment Marine Biology/Oceanography (alternate years with AP Chemistry). 8. Objective One (Student Attendance) During the school year the percentage of students missing more than 10 days will be less than 25%. This represents a decrease of 5% over the school year. Objective Two (Community Service Hours) By the end of the school year, 50% of seniors will accumulate 100 or more community service hours. Objective Three (Climate Survey - Bullying) By the end of school year the percentage of students indicating that students are bullied most of the time will decrease to 10%. The percentage of parents that indicate students are bullied most of the time will decrease to 10%. This represents a decrease of 11% and 7% respectively. Page 37

38 Objective Four (Climate Survey Illegal Substances) By the end of school year the percentage of students indicating that most students bring illegal substances to school will decrease to 10%. This represents a 20% decrease over the current year. Strategies for Student Success Attendance 1. Truancy team will continue to meet and focus on early intervention during semester one to decrease habitual absenteeism. 2. State of the Hurricanes will recognize and reward students with positive attendance histories. 3. Fully utilize CINS/FINS and the judicial system to enforce truancy laws. 4. Implement Saturday school as a remedial measure for student nonattendance. 5. CAT 5 program incorporates school values, school spirit, and camaraderie. 6. AHEC physician s assistant available on site. Community Service Hours 1. Partner with Upper Keys Foundation to provide service opportunities for Coral Shores student athletes that will count toward both athletic department commitments and community service hour requirements. 2.
