3 Word from the directeur Sciences Po Lyon, which was founded in 1948, is a public school linked by a convention to Université Lumière Lyon 2. The Institute, member of the alliance of Higher Education in Rhône-Alpes (AGERA) carries out its teaching and research in international, national and local environments, profiting from numerous partnerships which have been developed progressively over its more than half a century of existence. Many research laboratories are directly linked to the Institute and its areas of expertise (political science, media studies and communication, cultural studies). 4 Sciences Po Lyon Sciences Po Lyon is a public school of higher education whose vocation is to train students to become executives in public and private sectors. It offers a five-year education which focuses on three important sectors: public affairs, international affairs, and communication. Rich from its 60 years of experience providing excellent training, Sciences Po Lyon leads its students to become true professionals, capable of taking initiatives and making decisions. An original pedagogical project The 5 years of study are divided into two parts : 3 years of general study followed by two years of specialization and professionalization study integrating in particular a Masters program, leading to careers in three important fields (international affairs, public affairs, communication). Effective international relations More than 160 foreign universities are linked to Sciences Po Lyon through agreements. 6 A double degree EM Lyon Business School / Sciences Po lyon! The students having integrated Sciences Po Lyon in the first or second year have the possibility to apply for this double degree. The degree from Sciences Po Lyon The degree from Sciences Po Lyon is a Master s degree and is issued at the end of 5 years of study. After a three-year general course of study, the remaining two years offer numerous channels of specialization and professionalization. The first 3 years of general study The teaching at Sciences Po develops a multidisciplinary and progressive approach. Therefore, in the first three years, the accent is put on core learning skills which constitute the base of common knowledge, before continuing towards specialized learning and international open-mindedness. The first and second year 2 years of general study organized in 3 semesters around core disciplines : - law - political sciences - economy - history A 4 th semester of orientation towards professional specialization gleaned from important industries : - international affaires - public affaires - communication The third year The courses at Sciences Po Lyon Throughout the first three years of study, classes take on different forms. «Les cours fondamentaux» (CF) The fundamental courses, taught in an amphitheater, provide syntheses, elaborate explanations and research hypotheses. «Les conférences de méthode» (CDM) The sections classes, organized in small groups of students, are centered on written expression (acquisition of investigative method and writing) and oral expression (presentations and debates). «Les cours d ouverture» (CO) et «cours spécialisés» (CS) The electives, specialized courses or workshops, whose number and wording are progressive, complete the core learning skills by providing specific clarification on various specialized topics. Two modern languages are required English, Spanish, German and Italian.There exists the possibility to begin or continue studying Arabic, Chinese, Japanese and Portuguese and Russian. Module Project and Professional Integration This module, proposed throughout the programme, is intended to provide the students operational tools facilitating their employability. 5 A 3 rd year allowing a gradual specialization by integrating academic or professional mobility, particularly abroad, either through study-abroad programs or interships. 10 Applying to Sciences Po Lyon Entrance exam into first year Six Institutes of Political Science (Aix-en-Provence, Lille, Lyon, Rennes, Strasbourg and Toulouse) organize a common exam for entrance into first year. The exam is open to high school students having graduated the year before or about to graduate that year. Each candidate must make a list of the six schools in order of preference when registering for the exam. Each candidate will take the entrance exam in the city closest to his or her home wherever possible. How to enroll at Sciences Po lyon? Enrollment at Science Po Lyon is dependant on passing the entrance exam. No preparatory school (école préparatoire) is required given that twothirds of the students accepted into first year obtained their high school diploma in the same year that they took the entrance exam. The examination of the first year The entrance exam into the first year takes place in july Contemporary questions History Modern languages 3 hours / 37 % choice between 2 questions This part of the examination is a dissertation. It assesses knowledge along with analytical and argumentative capabilities regarding important themes and debates from recent history. The candidate can draw on a range of varied knowledge: economics, history, geography, philosophy, literature, scientific and technological progress For instance, a few themes of recent exams have included aging, media, currency, borders. Two separate subjects linked to these themes are provided to candidates. No prior reading is required. 3 hours /37% dissertation, only one subject The period covered is the world since 1945 A written examination marked out of 20. There are no disqualifying marks. Admission is based on 4 grades for a total of 180 points. A total number of 1,100 spots between de 6 Institutes of Political Studies. About 180 spots are offered at Sciences Po Lyon. 1.5 hours / 25% choice between English, German, Spanish and Italian The exam consists of three excercises: comprehension, expression and grammar. There are no multiple-choice questions The average of the high-school diploma (baccalauréat) is also taken into account. The succesful candidates are accepted to one of the Sciences Po Institutes based on their preferences and their rank on the entrance exam. 11 Entrance exam into second year It is possible to apply to Sciences Po Lyon as a secondyear student for those students who have 60 ECTS credits (a recognized first year of higher education). Students in the process of obtaining the required credits are allowed to apply on the condition that they pass their exams in the first session from May to June. Entrance exam into fourth year It is possible to apply to Sciences Po Lyon as a fourthyear student for those students who have 180 ECTS credits. Students in the process of obtaining the required credits are allowed to apply on the condition that they pass their exams in the first session from May to June. The examination into second year The entrance exam into the second year takes place in March Three written exams 1. One exam on an essay related to the society.* 2. One exam about political, economic and social current affairs.* 3. One written language exam (German, English, Spanish or Italian). *For test 1 and 2 a mark of less than 8 is disqualifying. A number of about 40 spots are offered at Sciences Po Lyon The examination into fourth year takes place in two parts The entrance exam takes place in April Entrance exams Dissertation 3 hours / 66% This written exam will deal with the theme announced at the beginning of registration and accompanied by a selective bibliography. Written language exam 2 hours / 33% English, Spanish, German or Italian. Ranking will determine if the student can continue to the oral part. Acceptance exam Sciences Po Lyon proposes with the other six Institutes of Political Studies a way in for students of literary preparatory classes. It concerns the candidates of BEL (Bank of Literary Tests) which, at the conclusion of the tests, are declared acceptable or sub-acceptable at ENS and have applied for the entrance of Sciences Po Lyon. The admission is validated with an interview with the persons in charge of the specialities and master s degrees. This road of access into Sciences Po Lyon is added to the already existing procedures which are maintained. A number of about 12 spots are offered at Sciences Po Lyon. Motivation interview The interview for candidates having achieved a certain level on the written exam, takes place with the head(s) of the department which organizes the 5th year major chosen by the candidate at registration. Succes on the entrance exam can be declared only following the admission interview. Entrance into the 4 th year at Sciences Po Lyon is conditional on the choice of a 5 th year major. 12 Additional courses of study In-house Degrees The Diplômes d Établissement (DE) International open-mindedness is especially encouraged by the study of geographic and cultural areas as part of the six in-house degrees which focus on Europe (DEEE), Asia (DEMEOC), the Arab world (DEMAC), Latin America and the Carribean (DEALC), the United-States of America (DELUSA) and Sub-Saharian Africa (DEASC). These in-house Degrees are unique to Sciences Po Lyon. They are carried out in parallel to the Sciences Po Lyon degree over the course of two years. DEALC In-house degree in Latin-American and Carribean Studies (DEALC) This degree offers a specialization regarding Latin America and Carribean Studies, through complementary courses which take place during the 1 st and 2 nd years at Sciences po Lyon. This degree covers key subjects which allow students to understand this particular area (history, geography, economics, anthropology, geopolitics, political sciences, sociology, development...) In addition to the languages of the region (Spanish, Portuguese, English). DEASC In-house degree in Modern Africa south of the Sahara (DEASC) This degree in African studies offers teachings concerning the various aspects of society, geography and economy of contemporary Africa south of the Sahara desert. Certificate of Political Studies (CEP) The Certificate of Political Studies is geared toward international students. It is a one year certificat. Attestation of Political Studies (AEP) The Attestation of political Studies is geared toward foreign students. It is a one semester certificat. 13 DEEE DELUSA DEMAC DEMEOC In-house degree in European Studies (DEEE) In-house degree in Contemporary United States (DELUSA) In-house degree in Contemporary Arab Affairs (DEMAC) In-house degree in Contemporary Far Eastern Studies (DEMEOC) This degree in European Studies represents the desire to promote a curriculum based on recent requirements of the EU. These additional courses, taken during the 2 nd and 4 th years at Sciences Po Lyon, aims to consider European integration by drawing on the recognized knowledge of faculty in Law, Public Policy, History and Economics. The DEEE is an excellent asset for students who wish to continue or complement their studies of Europe. This degree offers fundamental teachings in law, history, political science and economy of the United States of America. A great majority of the courses are delivered in English. This degree includes both an initiation to modern Arab language (approximately 150 hours) as a language of communication as well as classes concerning the different aspects of contemporary Arab society and economy. The goal of DEMEOC is to teach general knowledge about Asia to students who do not know this area and/or who do not know Chinese or Japanese. The complementary courses take place in addition to regular courses during the 1 st and 2 nd years of study and must be accompanied by a Japanese or Chinese language module (220 hours) organized by Sciences Po Lyon. Life long Training Thanks to its scientific potential and its network of professionals, Sciences Po Lyon offers original training courses to the private and the public sectors and meets the training requests of businesses, administrations and organizations for their employees. Each participant can thus enrich and renew his or her knowledge and acquire the necessary information to understand important contemporary questions. Short training In the continuity of proposed teaching, Sciences Po Lyon developed training programs of a duration of one or two days. These intensive training courses allow the participants to diversify and strengthen their skills in various domains. They offer most recent theoretical knowledge as well as its operational implementation. Customized training Organized at the request of a company, of an administration or an organization (associations, labor unions, professional groups), these training courses are conceived and organized in their premises or in those of Sciences Po Lyon. Having analyzed their demand and having validated a project of training courses, the institute stays their partner along each step of the action. 12

14 Research at Sciences Po Lyon Sciences Po Lyon has a large number of research and teaching professors being part of different research groups which represent the multidisciplinary identity of our institute. Sciences Po Lyon has the gardianship or is partner of four research groups. Research laboratories UMR 5206 Triangle Triangle (CNRS, ENS-Lyon, IEP de Lyon, Univ. Lyon 2, UJM Saint-Étienne) Triangle is an interdisciplinary research group centered on the study of action, rhetoric, and political and economic thought. The research group gathers over a hundred of teachers-researchers, researchers CNRS (National Center For Scientific Research), partners and about 120 PhD students. Their scientific activity is organized around 5 principal divisions: Public action Politicization and participation History of economic thought Political and economical philosophy Genre and politics Political lexicology and thought In addition, research projects are often supported by the ANR and groupings from the Rhône-Alpes region stucture. UMR 5062 Institute of the Far East (IAO) Institut d Asie orientale (IAO) (CNRS, ENS-Lyon, Sciences Po Lyon, Univ. Lyon 2) L IAO is an interdisciplinary research group that gathers teaching and research professors and researchers working mainly on China, Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam and the adjoining regions. It gathers specialists of diverse disciplines as history, anthropology, political science, law, geography, sociology and philosophy. Their primary themes : Far Eastern cultures and societies Territorial dynamics and political innovation in East Asia New elites and new margins THE IAO leads programs in particular with the universities of Heidelberg, Tokyo and Peking. UMR 5195 Research group of the Mediterranean and the Middle-East (GREMMO) (CNRS, Sciences Po Lyon, Univ. Lyon 2) GREMMO is situation at the heart of the Center for the East and for the Mediterranean (MOM), the GREMMO is a multidisciplanry research group whose work examines the entire area covering the Middle East and Northern Africa. The research group GREMMO represents a regional group for the researchers, teaching and research professors and doctoral students whose research concerns specific aspects of history and social, cultural and political realities of this area which forms the door of Europe to the South and to the Big Middle East. GREMMO gathers over twenty researchers as well as associated researchers and over twenty Phd students. 13

15 The PhD of Political Science EA 4147 Research group on Information et Communication (ELICO) (Univ. Lyon 1, Lyon 2, Lyon 3, ENSSIB, Sciences Po Lyon) ELICO, the host group which gathers teaching and research professors and doctoral students in Information and Communication Studies from several higher education institutions in Lyon. Their scientific activity is formed around 3 main research fields: Media, public and culture Documents and society Communication and organization The research group gathers over fifty teaching and research professors as well as over thirty PhD students. Sciences Po Lyon assures the educational and administrative management of the Doctorate of political science of the University of Lyon, within de framework of the doctoral school «Social Sciences». Seventy PhD students prepare their thesis in one of several laboratories, mainly three UMR CNRS : Triangle (action, speech, political and economic thought), the research group of the Mediterranean and the Middle-East (Gremmo) and the Institute of the Far-East (IAO). The magazine «Mots» (Words). The lexicology of Politics (ENS-Editions) Sciences Po Lyon houses the direction of the magazine «Mots». The languages of politics, the only french magazine dedicated to a study of political language. Created thirty years ago at the school for higher education of Saint-Cloud and published with the support of the CNRS and the region Rhône-Alpes. 14

16 An high-quality community Resources adapted to today s teaching needs Since 1999, Sciences Po Lyon has settled into the renovated spaces of the former «École de santé militaire» in Lyon and is divided into four sections : pedagogical, with 3 amphitheaters and more than twenty classrooms, including computer and multimedia labs administrative, combining reception, offices, student career center documentary (library, periodical room, the center of contemporary documentation and reading rooms) associations (student association offices), as well as a cafeteria managed by CROUS.
