1 Curriculum Vitae Dr. Carlijn van den Boomen Personal details Title(s), initial(s), first name, surname: Dr. C. (Carlijn) van den Boomen Date and place of birth: July 27, 1986, Geldrop, the Netherlands Nationality: Dutch Gender: Female Current position University/College of Higher Education: Utrecht University Starting date (dd/mm/yy): 08/03/2014 Position: post-doc Doctorate University/College of Higher Education: Utrecht University Starting date (dd/mm/yy): 01/09/2009 Date of PhD award (dd/mm/yy): 07/03/2014 Supervisor ( Promotor ): Prof. Dr. Chantal Kemner Title of thesis: Suddenly I see! A developmental perspective on face processing Master s ( doctoraal ) cum laude University/College of Higher Education: Maastricht University Date (dd/mm/yy): 31/08/2009 Main subject: Research Master Neuroscience, Neuropsychology, and psychopathology Brief summary of my research over the last five years My research focuses on development of visual processing. I showed that basic visual processing continues to develop until early puberty, and that the influence of basic on complex visual processes changes throughout life. I used and compared psychophysics and neuroimaging (EEG, fnirs), showing that these techniques can complement each other in our understanding of the developing visual brain. Now that we know that the visual system needs multiple years to mature, we can continue to study what affects visual development. I previously showed that environmental (anesthesia, learning) or genetic factors (Cataract, Autism) limit visual development. To relate visual processes to a broader range of social and cognitive development, I am actively involved in two longitudinal cohort studies. I have a coordinating international role in the EU-AIMS project, studying early signs of Autism in infants and toddlers. Furthermore, in the Consortium Individual Development, we study individual differences in the development of social competence and behavioural control. In my future research, I aim to continue to examine the relation between basic and complex visual processes, and how these relate to social development. Ultimately, I aim to understand the flexibility of the developing brain, and possible influences on the course of development. Therefore, my research currently focuses on facilitating and restricting factors on visual brain development.
