3 PSY384a Laboratory Course in Experimental Psychology 3 cr, Practical Course spring term (January-April) Student familiarizes with the basics of research in experimental psychology in practice: reading of scientific articles, planning of research on a specific topic, doing experiments in a laboratory, analyzing and reporting the results. After the completion of this course the student masters the basics of experimental research and scientific reporting. Minimum of 3 English-speaking students required for a group. PSY384b Practical Work in Perceptual or Cognitive Psychology 9 cr full academic year (September-May) prerequisite: PSY384a or equivalent knowledge The phases of experimental research: planning an experimental research, carrying out the experiments, evaluating the results, scientific communication. After the course the student knows the fundamentals of modern experimental research and is capable of reading and reporting scientific results of psychology. The topic of the research can be about visual or auditory perception, memory and attention, or experimental field research in traffic psyhology. Reading, tutorial, practical work, report, presentation in the Science Day of the Department in April. Minimum of 3 English-speaking students required for a group. PSY231 Developmental Psychology II 7 cr This course deepens the knowledge of the central questions of the research and theory formation in development psychology. The focus areas are the significance of heritability and prenatal factors in the individual s development, the basis, the mechanisms, and the significance of dyadic interaction, the fundamentals and the significance of the attachment theory in life span perspective, as well as understanding the connections between research and clinical applications Prerequisites: Developmental Psychology I (or equivalent knowledge). a) Online course and lectures (recommended!) or b) a written exam. a) A collection of online scientific artticles and D. 4 PSY 421 Multisensory perception and processing 3 cr Content: Perception is multisensory in natural interaction with the environment. For example, a predator may see its prey hiding in bushes, hear the sounds it makes, or even smell it's track. It is important for survival that the senses work together smoothly and efficiently. In this seminar, multisensory perception and processing is studied by reading, discussing and presenting chapters from a handbook, mainly focusing on interactions between vision, audition and touch. Object recognition, speech perception, perception-action links and multisensory processing mechanisms are addressed. The seminar consists of eight weekly meetings, where participation is compulsory. Each student presents a chapter, and participates in discussing all chapters. Number of students: 6-12 Prerequisites: Perceptual pscychology I, Cognitive and Neuropsychology I (or equivalent knowledge). For visiting students: The course can be extended by taking a practical course on experimental psychology (worth 3 credits) during spring 2014, provided that a minimum of three English-speaking students participate. PSY462 Humans, Organizations and Technology II: Experience 5 cr Target group: Psychology and cognitive science students; also other students with necessary prerequisites Objective: Understand the concept of experience. Understand how experience can be measured in quantitative and qualitative manner. Become familiar with aspects of experience in relation to gaming, media and communications context. In this course we will handle the concept of experience from multiple viewpoints. The course will start with a theoretical introduction to the experience formation, and will proceed to introduce experience research in different contexts, starting from gaming and threedimensional movies, and continuing to communications experience as well methodological aspects of experience measurement. Main texts The texts will consist of multiple articles selected from literature. The texts will be announced and available at the beginning of the course. Completion:

PSY 493 Human factors in traffic safety 5 cr Description: The aim of the course is to give students an overview on the main theories, methods and empirical findings of traffic psychology. Main emphasis in the course is on traffic safety and means of improving driver behavior. Since traffic safety is a product of many societal, psychological and environmental factors, the approach in the course is interdisciplinary. PSY493 Introduction to Community Psychology 5 cr Community psychology is concerned with person environment interactions and the ways society affects individual and community functioning. The focus in community psychology is on social issues, social institutions, and other settings that influence individuals, groups, and organizations. The aim of community psychology practise is to facilitate psychological competence and empowerment, prevent disorder, and promote constructive social change. Community psychology aims at optimising the wellbeing and political participation of individuals and communities with innovative interventions. The aim of this course is to provide an overview of the history and development of community psychology, key concepts and values, and intervention techniques. Students will also visit and prepare a presentation of one non-governmental organization working in communities in Finland. After the course, students should be aware of the organizations aimed at improving quality of life in local community. Docent Timo Lajunen PSY493 Introduction to Intelligence 6 cr Intelligence is among the most important topics of psychology, yet it is often severely misunderstood by lay people and academics alike. In this course, you will learn about the basics of the concept and measurement of intelligence as it is used in psychometric intelligence research; what is known about the biology and environmental influences of intelligence; what is the role of intelligence in people's physical and mental health; how intelligence is relevant in broader societal processes, such as social mobility; and how to understand the relevance of intelligence differences in mundane everyday tasks, including planning and decision making. Intelligence in everyday life + Book PSY529 Scientific Writing (in English) 3 cr Objective: To learn practical and theoretical fundamentals of good scientific writing in English. Writing theory: composition, language, targeting, visualisation. Practicalities: tools, resources, reference managers. Exercises: reading and writing. Target group: Master and Doctoral students In Autumn, 2nd period PSY 518 Introduction to Imaging Genetics 5 cr The course will introduce to the new field of imaging genetics, which combines information on genotypes extracted from DNA with neuroimaging methods to understand the genetic origins of variations in brain functions and to identify the genetic risk factors for neurological and psychiatric pathologies. The students will read selected articles and chapter from a textbook and at the end of the course the students will be conversant with the main concepts in this new field and understand its potentials and limitations. For master and doctoral students PSY518 Current research themes in methodologies, values and personality 3 cr Students participate in the seminar in which researchers present their current research themes about above mentioned topics. Students write learning journal of the presentations and write summaries of articles of the topics. PSY529 Advanced Topics in Intelligence Research 4 cr In this advanced course on intelligence, we will consider more specific topics in intelligence research, including the association between intelligence and basic information processing and cognitive mechanisms; the role of cognitive aging in late-life psychological development; evolutionary hypotheses of intelligence; societal changes in intelligence levels; and requirements of intelligence in modern economies. Finally, we review some of the longitudinal datasets available for researchers interested in the study of intelligence.
