3 IN EUROPE FOR THE LAST THOUSAND YEARS A GROWING SUCCESS IN TERMS OF FIGURES A community of students studies at the University of Parma, where around faculty and staff members work. The Course catalogue consists of 35 First cycle Degree courses, 38 Second cycle Degree courses (2 held totally in English) and 6 Single cycle Degree courses; all the courses on offer are coordinated by the 18 departments. In the heart of the city you can find 9 departments, in the areas of arts and humanities, economics, law and social studies, medicine and veterinary. The University Campus is located in an area of over 77 hectares and hosts 9 scientific departments, with a number of sports facilities and services for students. RENOWNED SINCE THE TIME OF CHARLEMAGNE In 781 AD, a meeting between Charlemagne and the Irish monk Alcuin led to the rebirth of the Palatine School. This was the first important citation of higher education in the city. An imperial decree by Otto I on March 13, 962 granted Uberto, the bishop of Parma, the power to ordinate and elect attorneys, allowing them to exercise their profession anywhere in the Empire. SIGNIFICANT TO THE MOST IMPORTANT PEOPLE As far back as the 11th and 12th centuries, important students and professors arrived to study in Parma. Those such as St. Pier Damiani and Donizone, praised the secondary school of Parma through works such as the Vita comitissae Mathildis of in 1115: Parma leads the way in grammar the seven arts are taught with passion. Parma succeeded in keeping its renowned seat of education even two centuries later, so much so that Petrarch sent his son to study there. FROM PARMA TO THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS POSITIONS, SINCE THE BEGINNING According to the historian Ernest Dümmler, Parma has been a celebrated seat of learning since the 11th century, and has attracted students from countries beyond the Alps. Sinibaldo dei Fieschi and Simone de Brion studied at Parma before becoming, respectively, Pope Innocent IV and Pope Martin IV. In the 16th century, the House of Farnese founded one of the most prestigious University colleges ever seen in Italyright here in Parma. During the 18th century, recognized scholars such as the philosopher Condillac chose to study in Parma, and at the turn of the 19th century, Parma reached a point of such intellectual popularity that Napoleon extended its jurisdiction all the way to Alessandria. UP-TO-DATE STRUCTURES AND SERVICES For a thousand years, one of the secrets of the vitality of the University of Parma has been its ability to continuously renew itself. The results of this investment can be seen today in every university building, through its connections with the business world, its technological facilities and the excellence of research carried out here. In addition, constant effort is put into improving student services: simplifying their lives in making their education more effective and their entrance into the world of employment more rapidly successful. 4 RESEARCH Outstanding results of research teams, articles on international scientific journals and a high number of partnerships with foreign universities: top level research is a must at the University of Parma. Our research teams excel on many different fields: from food and agriculture to biotechnologies, from innovative medications to experimental medicine, including law, economics and arts. Among our most important discoveries, the mirror neurons by the Department of Neuroscience and our research in information engineering about Intelligent Transportation Systems, that lead to Intelligent vehicles. At the University of Parma there is also a TechnoPole for industrial research, including six different up to date research centers. 6 7

5 A LOVELY PLACE TO LIVE A FRIENDLY CITY FOR MODERN LIVING Busy but not chaotic, tidy but not boring, beautiful, efficient, and pleasant. With population of , Parma is the ideal size for getting around by bicycle. The countryside around the city is clean and unpolluted, with the fascinating Po valley to the north and the woods of the Apennines to the south. The Ligurian sea is also just an hour away. The quality of life in Parma is evident in the air, and the University actively contributes to this atmosphere. Part of this is due to the high quality of the large business community, the food industry and that irrepressible love for life that distinguishes the people of the Emilia-Romagna region. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has been located here since ACTIVITIES AND ENTERTAINMENT IN A BEAUTIFUL CITY A city immersed in art, Parma has around twenty theatres and cinemas; along with the greatest works by Correggio and Parmigianino; its a world famous opera house, the Verdi festival; and the new Paganini auditorium designed by Renzo Piano are only a few of the charms in Parma. International jazz and theatre festivals, rock concerts, art shows and galleries are always available to attend; for sports, the soccer, rugby, baseball, woman s volley and basketball teams, all rank in the highest Italian leagues. Pick any one of the events that Parma offers throughout the year and you will realize that here, cultural life never stops. 8 9

6 ORGANIZATION DEPARTMENTS RECTOR The Rector represents the University and supervises all its activities. He/she is elected every six years, convening and presiding over the Academic Senate and the Board of Directors. Pro-Rector Vicarious The Pro-Rector Vicarious is designated by the Rector to replace him when absent or unable to preside. Academic Senate Composed of: the Rector, the 18 Department Directors, 5 student representatives, 3 staff representatives, 6 faculty members representatives. This body defines the fundamental lines along which the University develops its teaching and research activities and student services. BOARD OF DIRECTORS This body, according to the fundamental lines defined by the Academic Senate, deliberates and supervises on general administration, financial affairs and property management of the University. It is composed of the Rector, 2 external members, 4 representatives of the academic staff, 2 student representatives and 1 staff representative. GENERAL DIRECTOR This figure supervises the administrative and accounting offices according to the fundamental lines of the Board of Directors. 13 STUDENT SERVICES AND FACILITIES IN EUROPA DA MILLE ANNI It is the official University web site, with up to date information about teaching and research activities, students services and facilities. It is one of the most visited websites of Parma and its province, welcoming about visitors per month. The site has been awarded as an example of excellence in the organization of the information to users by the CNVSU (National Committee for the Evaluation of the University System). EN.UNIPR.IT The English version of our website has been designed to fit all need of non-italian speakers. Another step forward of our University in the communication process towards an increasing number of English speaking users, through a description of the institution, our course catalogue, our services and facilities as well as the peculiarities of living in Parma. It is possible to reach the English version also by clicking on the UK flag on the official website (). URP - UNIVERSITY INFORMATION OFFICE The URP - Information Office manages communication between the University and its several stakeholders. The office provides access to documents and administrative procedures. It can be reached through the frontoffice, via telephone or . Tel COUNSELLING OFFICE The Counselling Office provides information about the courses of the University of Parma, the services available to students, as well as guides about all the courses. Informative and guidance interviews for individuals and small groups can be arranged by appointment. For senior classes of secondary schools and in order to help our prospective students, the office organizes educational visits to departments and university facilities. Tel. 0039/0521/ orienta@unipr.it POST GRADUATE COUNSELLING OFFICE This office offers information to graduates about postgraduate training and the best ways to enter the labour market. The office creates and manages databases of businesses and graduates, offers individual and group counselling, organizes internships with businesses and seminars on how to prepare for job interviews and submit resumes. The office organizes foreign language evening classes (English, French ) in each semester, intensive summer courses and courses on specific topics when requested by small groups of students. Tel. 0039/0521/ COMPUTER LABORATORIES AND WI-FI AREAS Each Department has computers rooms available to students. Almost all areas of the University are Wi-Fi covered. The connection is accessible to staff and students by entering the university account. SERVICE FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITY AND DISADVANTAGE PEOPLE - SERVICES FOR STUDENTS WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES The Delegate of the Rector, Prof. Caronna, welcomes disabled students at the Eli-Che. Eli-Che provides assistance in creating personalized curriculums as well as grants, the latest equipment and services required for personal needs (Lg.104/92). Students with certified disabilities of 66% or greater are entitled to exemption from university tuition fees, may request transportation, are given use of an electric scooter with one or two seats, can request to be accompanied by a student, tutor or peer who attends the same course and who will be paid for 150 hours of work (Lg.17/99). Disabled students also receive priority status for Erasmus scholarships, can participate in sporting activities and can co-organize events. As required by the Ministry of University since the academic year 2006/07, students with certified disabilities of less than 66% and students in need have also been welcomed. We have also planned specific educational paths for the learning disabled, according to law 170/2010. The current hourly rate is 7,00 euro. Tel. 0039/0521/ CULTURAL AND SOCIAL ACTIVITIES FOR STUDENTS The University finances cultural and social activities organized by 26 27

15 students. Student associations with representatives on Department Councils or on Course Councils, or groups of at least 50 students, can apply for financing. Tel. 0039/0521/ HOUSING AND MEALS The University Housing Office helps out-of-town students to find housing, acting as an intermediary between landlords and students on a non-profit basis. Tel. 0039/0521/ The University Residenza Sant Ilario can host visiting professors, researchers and students. Tel. 0039/0521/ The Residenza Terzo Millennio (located next to the University Campus) according to a special agreement with the University of Parma can offer housing solutions for students and professors. Tel. 0039/0521/ ER.GO provides student housing with more than 600 rooms in the 6 halls of residence within the city of Parma. It is possible to apply at for access to fixed rent benefits, based on income and merit requirements. It is also possible to make a reservation on the halls of residence vacancies board called BORSINO available on ER.GO also manages a network of snack bars and restaurants. PSYCHOLOGICAL COUNSELING SERVICE In May 2013 the University of Parma has set up the Psychological Counseling Service, for students, future students, graduates, university staff (both teachers and administrative staff) and their families. The counseling is a short-term path, based on the building of a helping relationship aimed at reorganizing the resources of the person and developing coping strategies for difficult situations. It consists of individual or group interviews led by psychologists trained in this area. The Psychological Counseling Service of the University, in which five psychologists psychotherapists work, offers free counseling guidance, personal counseling and group counseling. The Service is in Piazzale San Francesco, 2 (Parma), and is open from Monday to Thursday, Tel. 0039/0521/ counseling@unipr.it CUS PARMA, THE UNIVERSITY SPORT CENTER The University of Parma has many sporting facilities and equipment. At the University Campus at Parco Area delle Scienze (Via Langhirano) there are gyms for basketball and volleyball, a 6 lanes athletic track, 7 tennis courts, 2 multi-purpose facilities, 5 five-men soccer fields (4 with synthetic grass, one with natural grass outdoors, 2 indoors), 1 indoor athletic straight lane, 1 outdoor basketball court, a fitness centre, a gym, a six-hole golf green and driving range, a fencing hall, a judo hall, 3 soccer fields.
