4 High precision system Due to the higher cost of R-1234yf refrigerant, German car manufacturers are requiring an extreme charging precision of ± 15g on a wide ambient temperature range of 10 C to 50 C. The American SAE J2843 standard for R- 1234yf service station requires the same precision, but only on a much smaller ambient temperature scale of 21 C to 24 C. In order to pick the challenge & to exceed these requirements, NUSSBAUM Group developed a specific charging system fitted on all the ACE 21 Expert Series. This new device is designed in very small dimensions in order to maintain easy access to vehicle s service ports. It give a charging precision < ± 10 C to 50 C. In addition the recovery performances are > 99%, with a reading precision which is also < ± 10 C to 50 C. 5 ACE 21 "E" for ELECTRIC... What can cause wrong oil into the A/C system on hybrid-electrical vehicles? Hybrid and electric car are using electric-motor-driven compressor allowing the A/C system to run independently of an internal combustion engine Most of these high voltage compressors are using POE oil which is more resistive and poses high resistance to voltage leaking or picks at starts. PAG oil is less protective and can affect life of windings from the electricalmotor-driven-compressors. Also lubricant cross contamination reduces the resistivity of refrigerant with oil in the compressor, which could create a potential danger to technicians of exposure to high-voltage under some conditions. In some hybrid systems, a low-resistance situation due to contamination with PAG oil, will generate a trouble code from the on-board computer, shutting downs the hybrid system. It also means that the service equipment connected to such vehicles shall be capable of charging refrigerant into a system with less than 0.1% by weight of any residual PAG oil. (Specified by SAE J 2843 standard) High voltage compressor Designed for high voltage compressors ACE 21 fitted with the ELECTRIC option, is compatible with all Hybrid & Electric vehicles fitted with high voltage compressors. It includes an additional POE oil charging system really independant from the PAG oil. It also performs automaticaly a flushing process of the service hoses & the internal components of the service station. This is keeping the PAG / POE oil cross-contamination down to 0,08% (Refrigerant charge analysis ILK laboratory, Dresden), 20% below SAE J2843 requirement of 0,1%. 6 Refrigerant analysis ACE 21 can also be fitted to perform a vehicle refrigerant analysis prior to each service process. Again knowing the nature and the high cost of R-1234yf refrigerant it is economicaly vital to avoid any crosscontamination with unknown or improper refrigerant fluids. The integrated refrigerant analyser is mounted in a secured compartment with easy access for filter replacement. The refrigerant analyser is fitted with an independant sampling hose in order to avoid the risk of the service hoses contamination. The analyser gives a status of vehicle s refrigerant. If result shows that R-1234yf is pure at 98,5%, recovery process can start. If not vehicle air conditioning service is aborted. In combination of the refrigerant analysis, ACE 21 is also fitted with an extra connection port for connecting an external contamination recovery unit. Which allows the removal of any contaminated refrigerant from service hoses & vehicle, protecting the ACE 21 internal coponents and stored refrigerant. ACE 21 can also be interfaced via USB, with an Handheld refrigerant analyser. This solution offers the possibility of testing systems away from the service station. 7 Leak detection......with UV dye Using UV tracer is a preventive solution for visually identifying leaks, leakages. ACE 21 is fitted with an automatic UV dye injection system. The program automatically sets the right quantity of UV additive in proportion to the refrigerant charge....with refrigerant Using refrigerant for finding a leak can give good results, however it is not a cost effective procedure because it can result in an expensive waste of refrigerant. In addition a leak could allow a lot of refrigerant into the workshop environment. This is not an acceptable solution given the flammable nature of R-1234yf...with nitrogen Another safe & economic solution is to pressurise the AC system with a neutral gas such as oxygen free nitrogen, then to look for any pressure drop. Locating the leak of nitrogen can be done with a ultrasonic detector or spraying the AC components with a soap solution and watch for bubbles. Leak-detection with nitrogen or tracer gas Connection for nitrogen or tracer gas Tracer gas detector...with tracer gas The best method would be to use a tracer gas which is composed of 95% of nitrogen & 5% hydrogen (very low quantity). After pressurising the AC system, again it is possible to look for a pressure drop but also to precisely locate the leak with an electronic hydrogen detector with a sensitivity of 3g per year. This process is cost effective and brings good results with an little risk. ACE 21 EXPERT Serie is fitted with a connection port for neutral gas and includes an automatic pressure test of the AC system. It uses an high precision pressure transducer for identifying eventual pressure drop which means leaking systems. In combination with an electronic hydrogen detector, it is simple to locate the leaks. ACE 21 EXPERT
