4 Eligibility for School Choice If you live outside of Denville, Rockaway Borough, Rockaway Township, or Wharton, you are eligible to apply for school choice if: You are currently enrolled in your local public school or a public charter school (Tier 1). You are currently enrolled in a private/parochial or choice school or are homeschooled (Tier 2). You will be in grades 9, 10, 11, or 12 next year. You file an Intent to Participate Form and Application by December 2 nd. We are required to offer seats to all eligible Tier 1 students before we can offer seats to Tier 2 students.
5 School Choice Decisions Decisions for the regular high school program are based on: Space availability Ability of our district to implement your IEP (if applicable) What happens if more students apply than there are seats available? Choice applicants with siblings enrolled in the district get preference. Choice applicants who are current MHRD students moving out of district get preference. All other students will be placed in a random lottery with a ranked waitlist.
6 Transportation Provided to all in-district students For out-of-district students who live within 20 miles of MHRD, resident district must provide either transportation or aid-in-lieu of transportation. It is your resident district that decides what it will offer-- there is no guarantee. For out-of-district students who live over 20 miles of MHRD, transportation is solely the responsibility of the parent/guardian. For a fee, MHRD allows choice students to ride existing routes pending space availability. Parents/Guardians must drop off and pick up at bus stop. Students participate in academics/activities/athletics at the host school.
7 Application Process (Regular Program) Intent to Participate Form (Out-of-District students only) Due December 2 nd to home district Superintendent (send us a copy) Online application at (Click on School Choice Programs): Due December 2 nd Send in a copy of the student s IEP or 504 Plan (if applicable) You may indicate a preference for Morris Hills or Morris Knolls on your application, but there is no guarantee that you will get your selection (dependent on space availability) If a lottery is needed, you will be notified via of the date and time. Decisions will be mailed out on or before December 20 th Responses must be received by January 6 th or your spot will be given away to the next student on the waitlist.
