2 Teaching Experience Fall 2011-present Assistant Professor, University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown Introduction to Sociology, Introduction to Criminal Justice, Criminology, Contemporary Issues in Criminal Justice, Social Problems, Criminal Court Procedure, Deviance & Social Control, Sociology of Law, Corrections As the sole faculty member with a criminology background, I was hired to help design and develop the curriculum for the new Justice Studies & Criminology baccalaureate degree program. In addition to the normal responsibilities of an assistant professor (designing course content; presenting lectures and discussions; creating syllabi; designing classroom activities; designing and evaluating assignments, papers, and examinations; and holding office hours), I have been working closely with the division chair to implement the new degree program and to design and teach new courses. I have also re-activated the local chapter of Alpha Kappa Delta, the sociology honor society, and am serving as faculty advisor. Summer 2009-Spring 2011 Graduate Instructor, University of Delaware Introduction to Sociology, Social Deviance I was responsible for designing course content; presenting lectures and discussions; creating syllabi; designing classroom activities; designing and evaluating assignments, papers, and examinations; and holding office hours. Spring 2009-Spring 2011 Adjunct Instructor, Delaware State University Introduction to Sociology, Juvenile Delinquency, Introduction to Criminal Justice I was responsible for designing course content; presenting lectures and discussions; creating syllabi; designing classroom activities; and designing and evaluating assignments, papers, and examinations. Classes at Delaware State provided an opportunity to instruct a more diverse group of students at an HBCU and to provide mentoring services since most of the students are first generation college students. Spring 2009-Spring 2010 Adjunct Instructor, Rowan University Introduction to Sociology, Sociological Research Methods, Deviant Behavior and Social Control (Writing Intensive) I was responsible for designing course content; presenting lectures and discussions; creating syllabi; designing classroom activities; and designing and evaluating assignments, papers, and examinations. In the writing intensive course, I was responsible for assigning numerous writing assignments and working with students to develop and improve writing skills. 3 I was responsible for designing course content; presenting lectures and discussions; creating syllabi; designing classroom activities; and designing and evaluating assignments, papers, and examinations. This course provided an overview of research methods utilized in the social sciences to a highly diverse group of twenty-four traditional and non-traditional undergraduate students. Fall 2005-Spring 2009 Teaching Assistant, University of Delaware Introduction to Legal Studies, Problems of the Criminal Judiciary, Theories of Society, Introduction to Sociological Research I assisted professors with management of students, including keeping an accurate grade roster; grading assignments and exams; running review sessions; composing review sheets and exam questions; suggesting different teaching materials; and lecturing on several topics including how international laws against genocide fit into the rule of law and classical sociological theory (Marx and Weber). I also ran the lab sessions for the quantitative methods class (Intro to Soc. Research). Research Experience Current Activities My current research activities include examining the ways in which American cultural ideas influence the mitigation process in Delaware capital cases, analyzing the use of victim impact evidence in capital cases and how the portrayal of victims reflects the societal value placed on different groups, looking at the impact of gun control laws, and examining genocide criminologically Research Associate, Capital Jury Project, Phase III, Delaware Portion Principal Investigator: William J. Bowers, Ph.D. Delaware Co-Principal Investigators: Judy Ritter, J.D., and Benjamin Fleury-Steiner, Ph.D. This project was designed to investigate the decision-making process utilized by jurors and juries sitting on capital murder cases through the use of in-depth interviews and reviews of trial transcripts. Using both open- and close-ended questions, the goal of the project is to chronicle the experiences of capital jurors from jury selection through final sentencing verdict, to investigate what factors they consider important in making their decisions, what arguments make the most impact on them, how they make sense of the evidence presented, and how closely their recollections mirror the evidence actually presented at trial in order to determine the ability of different guided-discretion statutes to reduce arbitrariness in capital sentencing verdicts. This project is being funded by the National Science Foundation Research Assistant, Cornell University Delaware Criminal Homicide Review Project Principal Investigator: Valerie Hans, Ph.D. This project was designed to examine all homicide court files on record in Delaware from to assess the fairness of capital sentencing decisions by judges and capital charging 3

4 decisions by prosecutors. My role was to go to the courthouse and read through all available homicide files and code the cases on more than 600 variables, including details of the crime, the victim, the offender, the outcome and sentence, the evidence against the defendant, and the severity of the defendant s criminal record and of the crime.
