WELCOME Welcome to Congress Religious Education Congress
WELCOME General Info February 2009 Dear Congress Participants, May I take this opportunity to welcome you to another wonderful Religious Education Congress. Each year this marvelous event affords us an opportunity to renew our faith and our commitment to the ministry of evangelization and catechesis. The 2009 theme Love Unfolding Igniting Our Yes flows from the Scriptures of the First Sunday in Lent. We are reminded that Covenant Love, poured out and at the heart of all of creation, draws us ever more profoundly into the heart of a loving God. It is the way of Jesus who called his disciples and now invites us to utter our yes with courage, confident that through our own passion the lives of others will catch fire and be made new again. The excellent keynotes, workshops, and liturgical celebrations offered throughout the weekend are a source of enrichment and renewal for all. I am gratified and encouraged that so many of you take advantage of the wonderful opportunities for networking, input, and renewal. Your leadership and participation are key to the ongoing growth and well being of our parish communities of faith. Please be assured of my continuing support and encouragement as you dedicate your time and energy to this most vital catechetical ministry. Asking God s blessing on you, your families and parish communities, and with every best wish, I am Sincerely yours in Christ, His Eminence Cardinal Roger Mahony Archbishop of Los Angeles 3
WELCOME Dear Friends, It is with great joy that I welcome you to yet another wonderful faith-filled Congress. The weekend offers us the opportunity to gather, renew and recommit to sharing the Good News. Our theme for 2009, Love Unfolding... Igniting Our Yes, is inspired by the Scriptures for the first Sunday of Lent. Trusting in God s faithful Covenant, we are nourished and sustained on the journey. Our bond of oneness generates and ignites a fresh energy and propels us to give voice to our yes anew. As you will recall, a Religious Education Endowment Fund has been established in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles for the ongoing education and formation of Directors of Religious Education, Adult Educators, Young Adults and Youth Ministers. The fund is currently enabling 10 students to pursue a master s degree in Religious Education. Your gift offering at the 2008 Congress Saturday night liturgies added $42,000 to this fund. We also thank those who made a special contribution to the endowment with their online registration. The creative and inspirational liturgical celebrations and entertainment provided are sure to lift our spirits and ignite our yes. At the heart of the many activities there is also opportunity to come apart and rest in the silence of Sacred Space, walk the labyrinth or celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Thank you for your wonderful leadership and your unwavering commitment to uttering your yes and keeping the vision of Jesus central to all that you are and do. I look forward to greeting you at this spirit-filled gathering. Sincerely, Sr. Edith Prendergast, RSC Archdiocesan Director Office of Religious Education Religious Education Congress

See! Touch! Hear! The overwhelming Love of God unfolding, Igniting within us a sacred romance; A covenant of faith, A river of compassion; A promise of peace. We know this unfolding love so well In igniting the response of Mary, The yes of a young woman, Giving birth to the Savior of the world. We know this unfolding love so well In feeding the yearning of the blind and homeless one Abandoned by family and friends, who recognized the Light of the World in a stranger on the side of the road; We know this unfolding love so well In the search for wholeness Of a woman sitting near Jacob s well where she drank deep of God s lavish grace made flesh for her, for all. We know this unfolding love so well In opening the hearts of ordinary people To recognize and celebrate God s love In surprising circumstances, In unexpected places. Arena But this love is not just an ancient love. With every breath we take, God s love unfolds around us and within us, And with persistent patience and abiding hope, Waits for our response to God s simple and stark invitation to Come and see, Even when we have become tired of looking; Even when our eyes are filled with tears; Even when we are unsure of what we might see. Still, God calls, And each day extends the same invitation: Come and see. And God yearns for our yes to tasting and seeing and touching and hearing the love of God poured out in every time and every place, reminding us to live the promise, to be faithful to the covenant to ignite the yes of the world. E Hô mai you are the source and breath of life. We gather here as family both friends and strangers too. To hear God s word, to share God s breath, open our hearts to you. You are the source that gives us life, you are the hope we seek. And in our lives help us to be filled with compassion and love. And by your love we are made whole, help us to share this call. To be your sons and daughters now to build your kingdom here. In times of tragedy and loss, when words just aren t enough. When questions leave us filled with rage, help us to find your grace. As parents, mothers, fathers all, help us to be your light. Give our eyes the sight to see your dwelling in each heart. And as we go our separate ways, renew our hearts and minds. Show us the path to follow you, be with us as we go. Copyright 2008 Joe Camacho. All rights reserved. Used with permission. 42 HAWAIIAN LITURGY 2009 Religious Education Congress

Will you kiss the leper clean, and do such as this unseen, And admit to what I mean in you and you in me? Will you love the you you hide if I but call your name? But those trophies could not equal to the grace by which I stand. (Refrain) Refrain 2 In Christ alone will I glory for only by His grace I am redeemed.
