3 Choosing the right High School The process that mimics the college application process There is a wide variety of school choices and programs within CPS Admission procedures and requirements can vary by school and by program The right high school provides a student the foundation for life and career success
4 New for this Fall! The NWEA MAP has replaced the ISAT as the test used to determine applicants eligibility for Selective Enrollment High Schools, IB High Schools, Magnet High Schools, Military Academies, and CTE-College and Career Academies. Students with 504 Plans have the same minimum eligibility requirements as general education students. Applicants to IB High Schools are only required to attend one Information Session, at one of four sites, even if they are applying for more than one IB High Schools. New schools and programs may be under review by CPS, stay tuned at
5 What options are out there? Centrally Managed by Office of Access and Enrollment n CTE-College and Career Academies n International Baccalaureate n Magnet High Schools and Programs n Military Academies n Selective Enrollment High Schools Not managed by Office of Access and Enrollment n Neighborhood schools n Specific programs within neighborhood schools (ie. Honors/ Double Honors, Arts) n Charter schools n Private and Parochial schools is your guide for all programs within schools
6 Neighborhood Schools Neighborhood High Schools (sometimes referred to as Zoned School) offer admission to any student in the attendance area Admissions n Students in the attendance area are automatically enrolled in these schools High School Options To find your assigned neighborhood high school: n Most neighborhood high schools have spaces for non-attendance students. Applications are available either at the school office or on the school s website. n Criteria are determined by the neighborhood school
7 Selective Enrollment Schools Designed for academically advanced students. They offer primarily honors and AP courses. High Schools n Brooks College Prep n Jones College Prep n King College Prep n Lane Technical n Lindblom Math and Science n Northside College Prep n Payton College Prep n Westinghouse n Whitney Young n South Shore Application Process One application per student Can apply up to six schools Admission testing is required Apply online at *schedule test first and THEN apply Students who schedule their exam for October or November will receive their test results and final point score within three weeks of the test date. If submitting paper application, test will be scheduled by OAE and parent will receive a letter with date, time, and location of the test
8 Eligibility Requirements: Students must pre-qualify based on their NWEA MAP scores. *General Education students and students with a 504 Plan must score at the 24 th percentile or above in Reading AND Math *Students with an IEP and students receiving bilingual education must have percentiles in Reading and Math that equal 48 or more. 7 th grade grades Entrance exam The Admission Exam: Covers Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary, Language Arts (grammar) and Math word problems Takes approximately three hours to complete (unless student has an IEP/504 Plan that allows for additional time) Calculators are not allowed (unless specified on an IEP) Selection Process: 900 point scale -Derived from admission test scores, NWEA scores, and final cumulative grades. Each category is worth 300 points. Socio-economic Factors- Taken into consideration and is based on your home address. Each street address falls within one of four tiers. (For details on how tiers are used in selection process, please visit under News. It is also in the High School guide) Selection Process Part II: First 30% of seats at each school are filled by rank score ONLY Remaining seats are divided equally among the four tiers The top scoring students in each tier are selected No sibling preference and no consideration for proximity Application Pool and Principal Discretion: Principal Discretion allows principals of Selective Enrollment High Schools to fill a designated number of seats, outside of the regular selection process. The process takes place in March, after the first round of regular selection. Information will be posted at in February 2015.
9 Magnet High Schools and Programs Offer specialty programs in areas including fine and performing arts, engineering, and agricultural science. High Schools and Programs Von Steuben Metro. Science (Science and Scholars Program) Curie High School (Fine and Performing Arts) Senn Fine and Perfoming Arts Program Chicago HS for Agricultural Science Harlan Engineering Program Michele Clark Academic Prep RTC Medical Prep HS (Health Sciences) Disney II Magnet (Fine Arts and Technology) Application Process One application per student Students must pre-qualify to participate in the selection process Apply up to eight schools/programs Audition / portfolio review is required for Senn * if applying online schedule audition/review first THEN apply Apply online or paper application
10 Eligibility: Magnet High Schools General education students and students with a 504 Plan must score at the 24 th percentile or above in reading and math. Students with an IEP and students receiving bilingual education services must have percentiles in reading and math that equal 48 or more. *Von Steuben has two programs- Science program and a Scholars program *Von Steuben Scholars Program: The Scholars program requires minimum percentile of 60 in both reading and math. In addition, applicants must submit teacher recommendations and an essay. For additional information, see Von Steuben s website, Selection Process: Most magnet HS take into account socio-economic characteristics into consideration (Tiers) Most schools students selected by computerized lottery. Siblings accepted first but there are two exceptions: *Senn-eligible students are selected through audition and/or portfolio review process *Von Steuben Scholars-eligible students are selected based on test scores, GPA, teacher recommendations and essay Waitlist: After available seats are filled, non-selected students are placed on waitlists Waitlists are managed by the school
11 Military Academies Offer college preparatory curriculum and each academy focuses on a branch of military. There is no expectation for students to enter the military after graduation. Focus on leadership, teamwork and service. High Schools Air Force Academy Carver Military Chicago Military Marine Math and Science Phoenix Military Rickover Naval Application/Selection Process One application per student Attendance at ONE information session is required. Must pre-qualify based on NWEA/MAP scores Students must have percentiles in Reading and Math that equal 48 or more. Apply up to 4 schools online or paper application (if applying online schedule Info. Session first and THEN apply) If using paper application, go to for a list of information sessions and attend the session of your choice. Selection: 2 part questionnaire (50 for each part) Essay completed at Info. Session (100 points) NWEA scores (150 points) 7 th grade grades (150 points)
12 International Baccalaureate (IB) Offer a comprehensive and challenging pre-university program. Widely recognized for high academic standards. High Schools Options Admissions Please visit for a list of schools that offer IB Diploma Programme and IB Career Related Certificate. Eligibility Requirements Students must pre-qualify for the selection process, based on their NWEA/MAP scores and 7 th grade GPA. General education students and students with a 504 Plan must score at the 24 th percentile or above in reading and math, AND have a minimum 7 th grade GPA (grade point average) of 2.5, AND attend one Information Session. Students with an IEP and students receiving bilingual education services must have percentiles in reading and math that equal 48 or more, AND have a minimum 7 th grade GPA of 2.5, AND attend one Information Session Apply to up to six schools. Students must attend one Information Session. If the student is applying online, they will schedule the Information Session first and THEN apply. If the student submits a paper application, OAE will schedule the student s Information Session and send a letter to the parent s home containing the location, date, and time. Students are given points based on their NWEA/MAP scores and seventh grade final grades. Applicants meeting a school s cutoff score will receive an offer. If a student lives in the attendance area or overlay boundary of an IB High School to which they are applying, they will receive 50 additional points.
13 College and Career Academies Prepare students for college and career success. While in High School, in addition to taking all CPS college prep core courses like math, science, and English, students participating in CCAs will experience hands-on training in their chosen industry. High Schools Admissions For a complete list, please visit and select College and Career Academies under Programs tab. CCA students may also have the opportunity to: Receive college scholarships Attain industry-recognized certifications Earn college credit Participate in job shadows & internships Attend college fairs & tours Compete in city, state and national competitions Apply to up to five academies. Lottery Academies do not have minimum eligibility requirements. For Jones Only: General education students and students with a 504 Plan must score on the NWEA/MAP at the 24 th percentile or above in reading and math; students with an IEP and students receiving bilingual education services must have percentiles in reading and math that equal 48 Lottery Academies select students through a computerized lottery, with preference given to students with minimum NWEA MAP scores at the 24 th percentile in reading and math (or percentiles that add up to 48 or more, for students with an IEP or students receiving bilingual education services). Students are ranked by score from high to low. Seats are filled starting from the highest score.
14 Charter Schools Please research each school s website to find out more information about the school. Some Charter School Options North: ASPIRA Chicago Math and Science CICS Northtown Muchin College Prep South: CICS DuSable Leadership Perspectives HS UNO Urban Prep Admissions Students must apply to each charter school directly. Application dates vary considerably from school to school. Applications are often available on the website or at the school office. Many schools do require you attend an information session prior to applying. West: Chicago Bulls Noble Street North Lawndale Pritzker Information on charter schools
15 Parochial Schools Parochial schools are run through the Catholic institutions, students from all religions are welcome to apply. These schools have a tuition fee associated with them, however scholarships and financial aid options are available. Admissions Even though admissions differ by school, in general, most Catholic High Schools will ask for 7 th and 8 th grade grades Standardized test scores Take the Catholic School Entrance Exam Essays and/or letters of recommendation from teachers, counselors, or principals *Please visit school websites to learn more about requirements and key dates because schools may differ *Interested students must apply directly to the school. 16 Private Schools Private schools are not public, nor affiliated with a church or organization. They vary considerably in terms of size, quality, and area of focus. Like parochial schools, these schools come with a tuition fee. However, there are scholarship and financial aid options for those interested in attending. Admissions Though admissions differs by school, in general, most private High Schools will ask for: Students 7th & 8th grade grades 7th grade test scores Students must also take the Entrance Exam Students will need to write an essay and submit letters of recommendation from a teacher, counselor or principal. Like Charter Schools, it is recommended to visit the school website to learn about admissions requirements and key dates because schools may differ. 18 Online Application Process Online scheduling will allow you to pick appointment dates, times and locations that work best with your calendar. If your schedule changes, you will be able to reschedule yourself at your convenience. If you lose your confirmation form for an appointment, you can log back on to print another copy. After you schedule your appointment(s), you will also be able to begin your applications on the same website starting October 1st. All eight grade students received an Eligibility Letter that contains a Personal Identification Number (PIN) to be used for the online site. If a student is applying to schools with admissions screenings-tests, information sessions, and auditions-you will need to Schedule appointments first and THEN Apply. You will receive a confirmation page after you schedule your appointments. Please print it out as you will need to take it with you to your appointments this is your entry ticket. Testing will begin in October. All students who sign up for a test that is administered in October or November will receive their exam results within three weeks of their testing date. This will help inform students decisions regarding the schools to which they wish to apply.
19 Paper Application Process Obtain paper applications from Complete all section and select choices Parent needs to sign the application and mail or hand deliver to OAE If you enclose a self-addressed, stamped postcard/envelope, it will be returned to you as confirmation If admission screenings (i.e. admission test, information session, audition) are required for the schools to which you apply, OAE will schedule your appointments and notify you by mail of the dates, times, and locations

Click here for more information Scroll down until you see How to Determine your Tier Follow steps 1-4 You will click on a link that will take you to US Census website Type in your address and click GO Under Geography Name column look in the FIFTH row for your census track number and WRITE IT DOWN Go back to the How to Determine your Tier list and click on number 4 Table titled Census Tract to Tier for Chicago will open. Click Ctrl F on your keyboard Small box will appear in the right hand corner. Type in your census number that you retrieved earlier. Your Tier will display next to your census number in the third column
21 Key Dates ALL Applications Deadline: December 12 th, 2014 If submitting an application to Mr. Jovanovic, please due so by November 21 st If they are not turned in by this date, you will be responsible for getting them to the schools! *Students who have not enrolled in a high school are automatically enrolled at the neighborhood high school by the end of April.
22 Other Information Letters of Recommendation: Some high schools require letters of recommendation from the teacher/counselor and/or student written essays. Please provide teachers with at least one week notice. Auditions/Portfolios: If you are applying to schools that require audition and/or portfolio review, please let your Fine Arts teachers know immediately so they can help you prepare.
