ACC CONTINUING EDUCATION TEACHING AND LEARNING CENTER Camp Description Students will spend five days at ACC s Eastview Campus learning about the conscious design, creation, and maintenance of sustainable human settlements. Students will also be given a chance to develop their skills in landscape design, construction, lab methodologies, and public speaking through the following projects; building a perennial food garden, working with natural building materials, assembling a rain water collection system, cultivating algae for bio-fuel production in one of ACC s laboratories, and presenting a group designproject to the other students, instructors, and student parents of the class. Students will be informed about career opportunities in sustainable design, and Austin area projects related to sustainable design. Students should come prepared to tour the Eastview campus on Monday, to build a garden on Tuesday and Thursday, and to participate in demonstration exercises during the other days of the week. Student Objectives 1) Introduce students to the principles of designing sustainable systems and harvesting renewable energies; 2) Examine the application of science and technology to the creation and advancement of sustainable human settlements; 3) Complete five projects during the camp: create a perennial food garden work with clay, sand and straw to create earthen building materials assemble a rain water collection system produce algae for bio-fuel production present a design project to the class Registration opens June 1, 2011, first come, first served. A waiting list will be taken by the staff at , , or tchrcert@austincc.edu. Students will also need to bring or purchase their lunch for each day. Course tuition is $300 per student (limited to 30). 2 EDTX 3018 ~ Sustainable Designs Systems Camp 2011 Faculty KIRBY FRY studied Natural Resource Conservation at Texas A&M University and continued learning from Bill Mollison, one of the original developers of permaculture systems design. He founded and taught at the Cross Timbers Permaculture Institute in North Texas and served in the U.S. Peace Corps in Guatemala. He currently teaches and offers over 15 years of experience in natural building and design consulting services through his firm Southern Exposure. PATRICIA PHELPS earned her PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Colorado at Boulder. She spent six years in applied research in the biotechnology industry; eleven years in basic research in academic laboratories in Colorado, Texas, and Louisiana; sixteen years teaching chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology and biology courses in colleges and universities in Texas and Louisiana. Research areas include: biodiesel production by microalgae, bioremediation of polluted aquifers, genetic engineering an industrial enzyme, conversion of industrial waste streams into agricultural products, isolation of fungal genes for cell wall synthesis, and characterization of ice-nucleating bacteria that cause frost damage in crops. LUCRETIA KRAUSE began her education at ACC before completing an honors thesis in molecular genetics in conjunction with a Microbiology B.S. at Texas State University. This summer she will complete an advanced technical certificate in environmental science water quality and analysis. She works as the Biology Lab Technician at ACC s Eastview Campus, where she prepares experiments, engages and tutors students, assists with summer camps, and implements cutting edge experiments with an emphasis on zero waste. She serves on the college s Recycling and Sustainability Committee and volunteers in local public schools with hands-on science programming. CAITLIN CAGLE s interest in natural building and renewable resources led her to study Renewable Energy in the United Kingdom. During her school career she became a student Energy Institute member, traveled to France and Iceland to study tidal, hydroelectric, and geothermal power, and presented a "green energy" alternative to planners in Samos, Greece. Caitlin received her Bachelor's of Science from the University of Exeter in Penryn, England and was awarded an Associateship of the Camborne School of Mines. After returning to Texas from the UK, she worked in floodplain management research before turning her attention to solar electric design. She currently works for an engineering and consultancy firm that specializes in the energy sector.

ARRIVE ON TIME (9 AM) AND LEAVE/PICKUP AT 5 PM EACH DAY. WEAR CLOTHES THAT ARE COMFORTABLE, CAN BE WORN OUTSIDE OR INSIDE IN HOT WEATHER, BRING LAYERS AS NEEDED WITH SUNSCREEN AND PLENTY OF WATER.
