1 First Semester Blueprint Department of Social Work The First Semester Blueprint is your guide to course registration in your first semester. Faculty from the Department of Social Work developed this blueprint. Recommendations for planning your first semester: Maintaining a balance between your academic responsibilities, extracurricular activities, and your social life is essential for your success. It is within that spirit that we advise you to register for a total of 14 to 16 credits. First Year Seminar is a required, writing-intensive course. Be sure to choose a topic that you enjoy because you will be doing a significant amount of reading and writing in whichever FYS you select. Consult the following pages for additional information: o Math recommendations, o AP and CLEP, and IB information if applicable. Social Work (B.S.W.) 2 Guidelines for Mathematical Science Courses School of Business, Education and Social Sciences STAT 269 is an introductory statistics course, with a prerequisite of two years of high school algebra. The introductory CIS courses to consider include: CIS 171 Problem Solving with Computers focuses on using computers and software to create reports, images, spreadsheets, web pages, and databases. CIS 180 Introduction to Computer and Information Science covers both technical and social aspects of computing, including privacy, security, reliability, and ethics. CIS 181 Computer Programming I in Python is the introductory programming course for both majors and non-majors. Social Work Majors: All students in these majors must take STAT 269, which is usually taken in the second year. This is a prerequisite for SOWK 385 Research. We highly recommend students who have a weak background in algebra not take a Math course during their first semester. First Semester Blueprint 2 Messiah College
3 QuEST courses offered in Fall 2016 appropriate for first year students QuEST, Qualities Essential for Student Transformation, is Messiah College s General Education Program. The program consists of four areas with the following objectives: Abilities of the liberal arts foster students who discern and communicate effectively. Knowledge of the liberal arts promotes students' grasp of the larger picture. Christian Faith encourages the development of an informed Christian conviction. Social responsibility spurs students to know self, know good, do good. This is a list of the approved QuEST courses being offered in Fall 2016 semester that are appropriate for firstyear students. Follow the blueprint for your major in deciding from which category to select. Select only ONE course per category.
