1 The International Human Resources Management Academy (IHRMA) International HRM and the Global Corporation Programme March September 2011
2 Programme What are current trends in the staffing of global multinationals? As firms continue to globalize what is the impact on managers? How do firms address diversity challenges across international operations? What opportunities and threats are there in developing a global employer brand? How can talent management be effective in an international context? In what way should corporations manage workforce risk across global operations? King s College London s HRM Learning Board and The Forum for Expatriate Management (FEM) has established the International Human Resources Management Academy (IHRMA) specifically to help global organizations address these and other highly challenging international business issues. The IHRMA s annual learning & development programme International HRM and the Global Corporation examines the key issues and activities encountered by HR professionals working in an increasingly international environment. The programme will help you think strategically about the management of people in organizations from different cultural and institutional environments. You will work alongside a diverse international group of like-minded professionals from organizations that operate globally. The programme will provide comprehensive teaching and insight from leading academics around the world, industry experts and respected practitioners. Programme This programme comprises six workshops at King s College London, as follows: Globalisation & the workforce 18 March pm 5.00pm Managing workforce risk within international operations 8 April pm 5.00pm Reward in an international context 20 May pm 5.00pm Globalising talent management 17 Jun pm 5.00pm Return on investment in international HRM 22 July pm 5.00pm International mobility: factors for success 23 September am 5.00pm Participants will also be invited to submit a 3,000 word research project on an IHR Management subject of their choosing. The research projects will be reviewed by IHRMA faculty and a prize awarded for the best submission. With permission, this will also be published by the FEM and circulated to members worldwide. All successful participants will gain certification in the IHR Management programme from King s College London and will be awarded the designatory letters IHRP (International Human Resources Professional) by The Forum for Expatriate Management. The programme will cost 3,750. Participants who register before 31 January will be entitled to an early-bird discounted rate of 3,250. Members of the Learning Board will receive a third off our standard fee for each course participant.
3 Workshops Globalization & the workforce How has the globalization of business impacted the nature of workforces and human resource management? This workshop will provide an overview of the management of HR in multinational companies in the context of how firms have globalised e.g. through international mergers and acquisitions. It will consider the role of global managers, the nature and creation of global teams and it will also highlight some of the challenges and opportunities associated with managing diversity and inclusion across international boundaries. Managing workforce risk within international operations What is the nature of workforce risk within international operations? From the security of employees assigned to dangerous places, understanding legal & regulatory obligations, to protecting organizational reputation from inappropriate actions of staff. This workshop will outline the types of risk that international HR professionals should understand; know how to assess, and be able to mitigate. It will also consider the nature of both HR and business roles in dealing with people related risk factors in the wider organization. Globalizing talent management The workshop will consider the notion of contemporary careers within international organizations, what the observed changes are from an individual s perspective, and how organizations are changing their ways of managing talent. As part of talent attraction and retention in the global corporation, the workshop also will examine the meaning and impact of employer branding and stimulate discussion into the challenges faced by the HR function when considering talent management initiatives around the world. Reward in an international context What factors create a global reward strategy that drives performance across international workforces? How do you deal with risk, reward and governance within the global corporation? This workshop will consider the nature of these issues and how firms have sought to resolve challenges and difficult business issues. It will also examine specific issues around complex reward such as international pensions, equity based incentives, and reward trends for expatriate assignments. Return on investment in international HRM The financial impact of HR programmes is starting to be understood and measured effectively. This workshop will look at how to design a cost/benefit model in an HR context and how this can be applied for international HRM. It will also consider the nature of HR metrics and workforce analytics and how these might be best utilised in an international HR context to help organisations make better informed evidence based decisions. International mobility: factors for success The workshop will focus on the staffing of global corporations and the use of international assignments. It will consider how a more strategic view of staffing arrangements is essential in an international context and will review how the management of international assignments has altered significantly and what success now means. It will also reassess the prospects for the international assignment and analyze the emergence of a portfolio of alternatives to the traditional international assignment including short-term assignments, commuter assignments, international business travel and virtual assignments. Here recruitment and selection, training, reward, career management and occupational health and safety issues will all be explored. Faculty The IHRMA will have faculty drawn from leading academics from King s and around the world, industry experts and respected practitioners within the International HR community. This programme will provide a challenging environment of skilled tutors and world class scholars who are experts on the functioning of organizations and their workforces within the global business environment.
