Facing the Blue Devils: Tech enters the game with a twogame winning streak at Durham Bulls Athletic Park, after taking the final two versus Duke in a three-game series there in The Hokies won 6-5 in 10 innings on Saturday before blanking the Blue Devils on Sunday, 9-0. However, Duke won all three meetings last year in Blacksburg, taking Friday s and Sunday s game by identical 5-3 scores sandwiched around a 13-0 win on Saturday. Home (state) away from home: During the 2013 season, Tech is scheduled to play 28 games at English Field, a good sign, because entering the season the team had a.659 winning percentage in its 24-year history and have had just two losing seasons at their home. Of their 28 road games scheduled, the Hokies are playing in the state of North Carolina 16 times, which included a 4-0 start to open the season and a 3-1 mark in the third weekend. The Hokies are getting used to the I-81 to I-77 road trip, as they are currently in the midst of a five-game road trip, going just 1-1 in the first two games. Red English and his wife, Ruth, who provided financial support for construction of the field. English, a native of Altavista, Va., played as an offensive and defensive guard on the Tech football teams from and graduated from Tech in English contributed to Tech athletics for more than 50 years and was one of the founders of The Student Aid Association in He served as president of that organization two of its first three years. English received the most outstanding alumni award at Tech in Through a generous gift from alumnus George Sampson, the home team dugout was named for long-time Tech baseball coach G.F. Red Laird during a ceremony on April 12, Laird recruited and coached Sampson at Tech. The Tech athletics department continues to make upgrades to the facility, with its newest completed in the spring of The natural grass surface was replaced with artificial turf. The $1 million field enables the Hokies to practice even during inclement weather, as grounds keepers can remove snow off of it quickly. Plus, it also drains quickly, allowing for a speedy resumption of play following any rain delays. Also, as part of this project, the dugouts were expanded to almost twice the size, and a new batter s eye and a new padded outfield fence were added. The Hokies opened play at their new home with a 7-2 victory against George Mason on March 22, 1989, and went on to post a 17-7 home record during their first season in the facility. The team s year-by-year and overall mark in its 25th seasons at English Field can be seen in the graph on the right. Prior to the 2004 season, a new lighting system was installed and the Hokies played their first baseball game under the lights in Blacksburg on April 28 of that year, defeating VMI, 8-0. 4 CHECKING THE POLLS Hokies vs. Ranked Opponents* vs. No vs vs vs. Top vs vs vs vs vs vs. Top vs. Top vs. Top * - Top 30 in the Hughes Era (2007-current) The Hokies were 5-13 versus ranked opponents in 2012 All-time, Tech is (24.5%) versus ranked opponents An unfamiliar road: In nine season in the ACC, last weekend marked just the second time Virginia Tech opened the conference slate at home, last doing it against Maryland in So, this weekend marks just the second time Tech will open its road ACC slate in the second weekend, but it didn t go well, losing all three at Clemson. Speaking of ACC road openers, the seven years the Hokies opened ACC play on the road, they only won one series - at Georgia Tech, 2-1, in They were swept three times and won just one game three times as well. Their record after two weekends: Tech has never been above.500 after the first two weekends of the ACC and only once, in 2007, were they.500, standing at 3-3. Only twice has the team had two wins after two weekends, in 2010 and in Opponents/ACC teams in polls Baseball America Pre UNC GT FSU ND NC State Virginia VT USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll Pre UNC FSU GT Virginia 25t NC State N. It marked the first time the Hokies had been ranked since the end of the 2010 season, when they were 16th in the BA poll heading into the NCAA Baseball Championship. After dropping 2 of 3 to No. 14 Georgia Tech last weekend, the Hokies fell out of the top 25. More on the rankings: In the column to the left is the history of Virginia Tech baseball versus ranked opponents all-time, as well as a detailed breakdown of the Hokies under head coach Pete Hughes. However, what is not listed is the Hokies success versus ranked opponents when they have also been ranked. That mark is a respectable 9-12 with 17 of those games occurring during the 2010 season and four this year. Overall, under Hughes, Tech is when ranked and that includes a 15-6 mark at English Field. Tech success in Blacksburg: Speaking of English Field, all-time, Tech is in 24 seasons at English Field (see chart previous page). The Hokies are also 1, in games played in Blacksburg and includes a 5-3 mark this season. Facing RV teams: Although the loss to then No. 22 Notre Dame was the first for Tech this year against a ranked opponent (top 30), Tech was 5-0 against teams receiving votes in various polls - Kent State (2-0), UNCW (2-0) and Radford (1-0) - seen on the left, bolded for the week played. vs. ranked opponents vs. unranked opponents vs. ACC vs. Atlantic vs. Big East vs. Big South vs. Colonial Athletic vs. MAAC vs. Mid-American vs. Patriot League vs. Southeastern vs. Southern when scoring first when opponent scores first when score in the first inning when opponent scores in the first in one-run games in two-run games in five+ run games in extra innings in shutouts leading after trailing tied leading after trailing tied leading after trailing tied Hokies 2013 record... when hitting a home run when opponent hits a home run when making 0 errors when making 1 error when making 2+ errors in day games in night games in doubleheaders/2-in-1 day vs. lefty starters vs. righty starters in February in March in April in May in June on Monday on Tuesday on Wednesday on Thursday on Friday on Saturday on Sunday when wearing white when wearing cream when wearing maroon when wearing grey (black #s) when wearing grey (orange #s) Score by Innings Ex Total Virginia Tech Opponent
5 Helping to Strike Out ALS: The Virginia Tech baseball team is partnering with Bull & Bones Brewhaus and Grill to help raise awareness and funds for ALS research. With every strikeout recorded by Tech s pitching staff this season, $5 will be donated to The Angel Fund in the name of Pete Frates - a former Hughes player (at Boston College) who was diagnosed with the disease just last year. The amount will go up to $10 for strikeouts recorded in any ACC Tournament game and $25 for any strikeout in an NCAA Regional or Super Regional game Strikeouts Total money raised 109 $545 Four games versus 2012 conference champs: In the opening weekend of 2013, Tech was the only team in the country to face two conference tournament champions (who were also picked to repeat), and went 4-0 over the weekend. Tech was one of just four teams in the nation that started the year with a total of four games against a team (or teams) that won a 2012 conference tournament title. The others: Portland (0-4) at Mississippi State (SEC) Miss. Valley St. (1-3) vs. Prairie View A&M (SWAC) West Michigan (0-4) at Pepperdine (West Coast) Non-conference win streak: The Hokies ended the 2012 season on an 18-game nonconference winning streak, the longest streak at the school since 1982, when Tech posted 20 straight in a single season. There has been just three streaks longer in a single season. The Hokies then extended their non-conference winning streak to 22 straight, before losing to Temple (2/23). That streak was the third longest ever in the program s history (spanning more than one season and excluding postseason) and was just three wins shy of matching a streak that set the standard almost a century ago. Season----Streak Seasons------Streak Notes won last 31 of 77 (lost two in NCAAs) and first four of won last three of 14, went 21-0 in 15 and won first of won last 18 of 2012 season and first four of won 20 in a row during the season More non-conference win streaks come to end: With the Hokies 4-3 loss to Elon on Wednesday, a pair of win streaks were snapped by the Phoenix. First, a 21-game midweek non-conference win streak came to an end - the last loss was on March 19, 2011 versus Radford (7-5). The other was a 14-game midweek non-conference road win streak - the last loss was on April 22, 2009 at Liberty (ironically 4-3). Here is Tech s record over the past five seasons in non-conference games: Year Overall Home Road Neutral Overall Comeback wins: Certainly, it s up for debate what is truly a comeback win, but last year Tech pulled out wins in 25 games in which they trailed. However there should be no debate to the 19 times they came back when trailing as late as entering their at-bats in the fifth and included four games entering their at-bats in the ninth. They have three wins this year already when trailing as late as their half of the fifth frame. Comeback win - not necessary in first weekend: Twenty-five of 34 (73.5 percent) of Tech s victories last year saw the team trail at one time during the contest. This season, its been just six of 13 (46.2 percent). The reason, Tech did not trail at any point during its first weekend. More impressive, excluding its first at-bats of the game, the Hokies came to the plate just four times in 30 innings with the game tied. That was mostly due to the team scoring in the first frame in three of the games. So far this year, the Hokies have 16 first-inning runs - scoring them in eight games. They are 6-2 when scoring in the first inning. Still haven t trailed too often: Going into weekend number five, the Hokies have come to the plate 37 times in 153 innings this season trailing in the contest. That includes eight in their first two losses - three against Temple, five versus Notre Dame - 18 innings in their three-game set versus Georgia Tech, in which they were victorious in one of them, and two innings at Elon. A welcomed rest: Tech s scheduled game with William & Mary last Wednesday was cancelled due to weather, giving Tech a four-day rest heading into its first weekend ACC series. It may have been welcomed as the Hokies were just coming off a stretch of playing nine games in nine days - they went and a week in which they played six games The last time that happened was in 2010, when Virginia Tech played nine games from March 12-20, and they went just 4-5. They also played six games in a week in that span (March 15-20) and posted a 2-4 mark. ACC Standings (thru March 14) Conference overall Atlantic Division W L T Pct. W L T Pct. 1.
