This talk and demonstration by RHS staff will teach you the theory behind pruning shrubs at this time of year along with vital pruning principles which will allow your plants to be at their best for the year ahead. General maintenance and pruning shrubs and climbers such as Buddleja, Wisteria and Cornus (dogwood) will be covered, as well as renovative pruning for overgrown shrubs. 6 Horticulture Greenhouses for Beginners Saturday 27 February 10am to 1pm Whether you have recently acquired or are thinking of acquiring a greenhouse, or would simply like guidance and ideas on how to get started, this illustrated talk and practical demonstration by Wisley s Glasshouse Specialist Team will set you on the right track. The session will cover different types of greenhouses to suit your needs, useful gizmos and gadgets, setting up the greenhouse for spring, raising plants, growing early crops under protection and growing spring-flowering plants. This full-day course with renowned plantsman Noel Kingsbury seeks to explore the plants that look good in winter as a springboard to understanding the annual growth cycle and how gardeners can make the most of it. There will also be a guided tour around the propagation glasshouses at Wisley where thousands of plants are raised for the garden every year. This day will focus on the vegetables that can be grown during spring and how to sow and plant them. This time of year is often a lean time for harvesting so discussions will also cover crops to plant in your garden this year for a harvest next spring. A range of practical jobs such as soil preparation, seed sowing techniques and intercropping will be covered. Let the RHS experts help you through the gardening year providing a whistle-stop tour of techniques, tips, tricks and advice on seasonal tasks so that you know what you could be doing when. March and April will include pricking out, lawn care, propagation, staking, sowing annuals outdoors and pruning for winter stem colour with opportunities for you to have a go at many of these tasks yourself. The session will include practical activities and a walk outside in the garden, so please come prepared with suitable clothing, footwear and gardening gloves. If so, then come and find out the secrets to keeping a healthy, luscious lawn all year round on this one-day course. Discover how to establish a lawn from scratch with turf or seed and how to renovate a grass area that is past its best. Yearly maintenance will be covered including feeding, mowing and weeding as well as effective solutions for removing moss. Grass types for different situations will be covered, as will equipment for keeping your sward smart to set your garden off to its best and be the envy of your neighbours. This informal walk will include information and identification points of the birds seen. All are welcome, especially newcomers to bird watching. Children under the age of 16 are to be accompanied by an adult. Binoculars would be useful and dress for cold weather conditions as this is an outside activity. 9 Horticulture Plant Supports and Staking Tuesday 10 May 10.30am to 12.30pm Discover how to support different plants in your garden including grasses, roses, flowers and shrubs. The session will cover why we stake, the different options for staking materials and how they are used at Wisley. You will then have the opportunity to have a go using birch stems on the Mixed Borders, so please come prepared with suitable footwear, clothing and gardening gloves. All materials are provided and included in the price of the course. This course includes the opportunity to make and take home a birch obelisk. This course will focus on vegetables that can be grown in summer months and how to sow and plant them. Harvesting, using and storing crops from spring sowings will also be explained. A range of practical techniques will be covered including seed sowing, successional sowing and planting out techniques. This is a practical day and attendees will have the chance to practise skills they are shown, so please come prepared with suitable footwear, clothing and gardening gloves. Growing Berries, Currants and Soft Fruit Friday 3 June 10.30am to 1pm Soft fruits are immensely rewarding to grow and can produce an abundance of crops even in minimal space. Learn how to get the taste of summer in your garden from strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and more. This session will cover different soft fruits and their care, planting, soils, siting, training, pruning and maintenance. Fruit trees and ornamental trees will be covered, including the techniques and aftercare of chip budding and side-veneer grafting. Selection of scion wood, rootstocks and the compatibility of the two will be covered, as well as the techniques used to achieve a successful graft. 10 Horticulture Growing Tree Fruit Thursday 23 June 10.30am to 1pm Learn how to grow tree fruit successfully in this half-day workshop with RHS Garden Wisley s fruit experts. Looking at tree form and selection, establishment and maintenance, you will feel much more confident about caring for your apples, pears, plums, cherries and more. This session will involve an outside section in Wisley s fruit garden, so please come prepared with suitable clothing and footwear.
