1 Center for Health Leadership UC Berkeley School of Public Health Leadership Fellows Program The most dangerous leadership myth is that leaders are born - that there is a genetic factor to leadership. This myth asserts that people simply either have certain charismatic qualities or not. That's nonsense; in fact, the opposite is true. Leaders are made rather than born. - Walter Bennis Program Handbook August 30, 2010 Draft Page 1 of 10 Page 2 of 10
2 Overview The Leadership Fellows Program is an 18-month leadership development program for 8-12 incoming 2-year MPH students in all disciplines. Built on a principle of developing leaders from the inside-out, the program aims to inspire students to become the best that they can be, and to strengthen their ability to make a positive difference in the world. The fellowship provides a stipend of $2000/semester and 2-3 units of credit/semester to support students full participation in program activities. Objectives The Fellows program provides an opportunity for students who are interested in pursuing a range of leadership paths (organizational leadership, community organizing and advocacy, policy, research and global health) to develop themselves over time in the context of a diverse cohort of colleagues and through a variety of integrated learning strategies. As a result of participating in this program, students will: Increase their self-awareness of their leadership strengths and areas in which they have opportunities for growth Increase their understanding of the competencies necessary for leading from where you are and serving in leadership roles Increase their ability to develop themselves as leaders over the course of their careers Enhance their ability to work successfully across disciplines Enhance their professional networks Demonstrate their ability to lead through their projects at the SPH and in the community Increase competencies in key leadership areas (described below) What Students Will Gain Personal Mastery is about knowing and discovering oneself for the purposes of understanding who you are as a leader, what developmental changes you want to make, and how you want to apply your talents in this world. Learn through Exploration and Experience. The program offers diverse learning strategies, including training workshops, mentoring, assessments, experiential exercises, case studies with health leaders, opportunities to facilitate and present with feedback, and action learning projects in the community. Learning is focused on developing students in four areas: Personal Development What are my strengths, what do I value, how do I learn and what to I want to become as a leader? Interpersonal - How do I model the way and conduct myself skillfully in relationships? Teams - How do I work effectively in teams, guide diverse groups towards becoming high performing teams, and develop collaborations? Organizational - How do I work effectively in organizations, find ways to bring my talents, and learn to practice influence? Leadership Competencies The Center for Health Leadership aims to develop the following leadership competencies in students: Communication Initiative Interpersonal Skills Meeting Facilitation Organizational Awareness Professional Integrity Project Management Relationship Building Self-confidence Self-development and Awareness Strategic Thinking and Problem Solving Teamwork Page 3 of 10 Page 4 of 10

4 Program Elements Initiated in First Semester Community Learning Sessions: Fellows will participate in a series of community learning sessions on a variety of topics to introduce them to models of leadership and core leadership and management skills, with special emphasis on facilitation skills. Individual development plan: Each student will complete an individual development plan during one of our Friday learning sessions. Students will discuss their plan with their coach and explore how to meet their learning goals within their individual action learning project. Coaches: Four professionals coaches and CHL faculty will work with students. Each coach will work with 2-3 students for 1 long and 3 short meetings each semester Coaches will work with students on their individual development plan, their plan for their action learning project, to review their multi-source assessments, and to explore dreams and challenges in their personal and professional development. Self-assessments and Myers-Briggs: Students will engage in a variety of selfassessments and continue to work with the Myers-Briggs Assessment they completed in Fall Team Projects (Spring 2011 Fall 2011): Fellows will be assigned to multidisciplinary teams to work on 2 team projects. Expectations Weekly meeting of teams outside of Friday sessions (2 hours at first, then can be 1-2 hour meetings TBD by group) Rotate roles of facilitator, recorder, chair of the week Blend of focus on product and process Projects: 1. Develop and facilitate case study in a community learning session Each team will develop a real-life local case study, write up case notes to send out to fellows in advance, and facilitate the case study session. Cases will be centered on a Public Health challenge that has occurred in the recent past (<3 years). Teams will select a case study from options prepared by CHL faculty. 2. Organize an event, learning program, or project for the School of Public Health In Spring 2011, each team will determine student body and faculty interest and needs around a potential event, learning program, or project to benefit the School of Public Health at large. These may include things such as a learning program for students on how to maximize leadership development in summer internships or organizing a special speaker event. Teams will work with CHL faculty to identify potential projects, and will implement programs in Fall Blogs: Students will create a blog and spend 30 minutes every other week writing on a prompt plus adding anything else they want to discuss related to what they are learning and thinking about in the Fellows program, and 30 minutes responding to the blogs of the other Fellows. Blogs can be created as text or video. Digital Storytelling Workshop: The Center for Digital Storytelling will give a 10-hour workshop in January 2011 (January 26, 6:30pm-9:30pm and January 28, 9:30am-6pm) and in April 2012 (Dates TBD). Participants will craft and record first-person narratives, collect still images, video, and music with which to illustrate their pieces, and are guided through computer tutorials that enable them, with teacher support, to edit their own stories. Field Trips and Retreat: Fellows will take part in one daylong field trip each semester. Field trips will provide an opportunity to tour and meet with a variety of health leaders and organizations in Northern California. The first field trip will be to Oakland (Alameda County HD, Asian Health Services, National Kaiser, & The Cal Endowment). The second field trip will be to Sacramento, and the third is TBD. In the second semester, Fellows will also have an overnight retreat at the Point Reyes Youth Hostel. Additional Program Elements in Second and Third Semesters Everyday Leaders video: Everyday Leaders is a new project for the CHL website, which will feature videos created by SPH students who interview individuals about how they are leading from where they are and their views on leadership. Fellows will each do one video featuring another fellow, student, faculty member, or alumni in the second or third semester of their program. Training will be provided. Mentors: Students will recruit a mentor to commit to 4 meetings over a 7-month period (Fall Spring 2012). Mentors will work with students on professional, leadership and career development issues, share their own leadership development journeys, and connect them with professionals and leaders in the field. Multi-source Assessment: Each student will develop a list of individuals to complete a web-based assessment of their leadership skills. This assessment will be completed in October 2011 and then again in April Students will meet with their coach to discuss the results of both assessments. Page 7 of 10 Page 8 of 10
5 Individual action learning project: Each student will select a Public Health or Healthcare organization where they will work from September 2011 through April Students will identify a sponsor in the organization who will serve as their preceptor for the experience. Students will work on one or more projects during this time that will support their personal leadership development goals. Projects could include: Serving on an organization s board, and carrying out projects for the board Working with the leadership team to develop/support/facilitate a strategic planning process for the organization Developing and facilitating a project team for a new organizational initiative Serving as staff for a collaboration or partnership Working with an organizational leader to carry out a special project These projects are meant to be different from the kinds of projects students might do for a class (such as a program evaluation or program plan) although these could be part of the overall plan over the year. The action learning project should not be a research project, although research can be a part of the plan. The project should be focused on expanding a student s current leadership skills and on learning about organizational culture, dynamics, and leadership. Students will identify the organization and sponsor by the end of August 2011, and set it up to begin in September (CHL faculty and staff will be available to help students identify options if they do not already have ideas). In our Friday sessions, we will discuss how to approach leaders in an organization to explore the possibility of their developing an action learning project there (practicing influence skills). Students will commit to 3-4 hours/week to their project, and at least half of their time should be spent on-site. Students will discuss issues that arise during these projects in community learning sessions, and with their mentors, and write about them in their bi-weekly blogs. Students will submit a proposal for their project in August 2011 for CHL faculty approval. Students will submit a mid-project report in January Students will complete a PowerPoint presentation, digital story, or video about their project and present at the Fellows graduation in May 2012; they will also design a page on their project for the CHL website.
