3 Introduction Welcome to Raceform Interactive By installing Raceform Interactive on your PC you agree to abide by the Licence Agreement at the back of this manual (see p ). Raceform Interactive is a horse racing evaluation tool, which contains the official British Horse Racing Board s race results plus analysis from Raceform s team of experts, giving you the most comprehensive and authoritative database of form in the world. You can update the form quickly online every day, with results, declarations and all entries, including early closing races, making it the fastest updated form book anywhere. Every detail of form and performance is at your fingertips, along with invaluable statistics on trainers, jockeys, pedigrees and sales information. This truly interactive database allows you to store and search your own ratings; make lists of significant horses, trainers or jockeys, and research complete trends and statistics. Raceform Interactive is used by professionals and enthusiasts alike, including leading trainers, owners and professional punters. 4 introduction Registering Raceform Interactive The CD enclosed in this pack contains 5 years of form. To install Raceform Interactive, simply insert this CD into your drive and follow the on-screen instructions. After the data on the CD has been loaded onto your PC, you will be asked to complete the registration details online to allow you to pick up Results and Decs (declarations & entries). You will need to do this just once (the first time you launch RI) Should your registration fail, you will see the registration window again when you launch Raceform Interactive the next time. This probably means that the registration details were not sent to Raceform s server. Make sure that you are connected to the internet when you send the registration form to us. Firewalls If you have a firewall, you must either disable it or configure it to allow you to communicate with the Raceform server. The IP address you should use is The port should be set to 21. If you are unsure about any of this, please contact your network administrator. Your Raceform Interactive database is specific to one machine. The registration process will register your name, address and database details with the Raceform Update site. Each time you update your database or download declarations, the database will register itself and confirm the data requirements for results and decs. No password is required after the initial registration is completed. Launching Raceform Interactive Raceform Interactive is launched by going to the Start Menu and selecting the Raceform Interactive icon. Should you wish to have a shortcut to Raceform Interactive on your desktop, you should right-click on this icon and choose Send To...Desktop, which will automatically place a shortcut there. When you launch RI, you will see a welcome screen, which provides you with several options on using RI. This window can be deactivated at the bottom. 2

5 Database maintenance updating your database database maintenance Update allows you import declarations, entries and results into your database from the Raceform Interactive data centre. Once you are a registered subscriber (see page 2), all you need to do is click on the Update menu to take you to Raceform Interactive s Online Update Manager and select what you wish to download from the menu. Use the What s Available button to see which files have been updated since you last downloaded them. These are denoted with a green blob those that have not been updated as yet will have a red blob next to them. declarations You have five options: Overnights These are updated at 12 noon the day before racing and again at 7.30pm (to incorporate individual betting forecasts, diomed comments and jockey silks as well as late jockey changes.) Whenever you download the latest decs, you will automatically pick up the latest 10-year trends, Jockey/Trainer Spot and Signposts files relating to that day s racing. Please note that in order to view today s cards, you need to pick up your declarations before 12 noon on the day of racing. If you are accessing them later, you will need to use the Old Overnights option (see below). As part of the declarations, you will also download the PDF printouts (colour racecards) relating to the day s racing. These include the Racing Post Spotlight verdict and the betting forecast. NB these PDF files are not available until about 7.30p.m. the night before racing. 4 Days These are updated at 3pm each day and contain runners and riders (where available) and weights. For the Saturday and Sunday cards, these 4-day entries are made available at about 3pm on a Tuesday. 5 Days Also updated at about 3pm each day these entries do not have weights as these are framed at the 4-day stage. Early Closers These are updated on a Monday morning at about 7am. The early closing races are all Class 1 and 2 races in the racing calendar which have an early declaration stage. These include the Derby & Oaks, major races at Royal Ascot and the big Sales races. (see also p16) Old Overnights If you are updating today s cards after the 12 noon cut-off point, you need to use the Old Overnights option to get them. Put a tick in the box and type in the date corresponding to the day s racing. This feature can also be used to get old cards from, say, a major meeting to see how the ratings before the races matched up with the results. Please note that the results since the races will be added to the form for all the runners. Also, it should be noted that only approximately 3 months worth of back-data is stored on the RI data server. RESULTS In the Online Update Manager window you can see how up to date your database is. When you click on the What s Available button, the Latest Available dialogue box is updated so you will instantly know how far out of 3

6 database maintenance 4 date you are. No matter when you last updated your database, RI always knows exactly what needs to be downloaded. However, it is recommended that you do not leave your database too long without updating the download limit (in the defaults menu) is set to 20 days. You can change this to get more data but bear in mind that this may take some time and we only keep about 6 months worth of information on the server. If you do get too far out of date (after a holiday for example) please contact us and we will send you the latest CD. It is recommended that you only use the Update to Latest option when updating results, unless there is a specific reason for using the other options. Skeleton Results You are now able to pick up the previous day s results automatically, using Update to Latest in Raceform Interactive. These temporary skeleton files are generated at midnight, so from roughly ten past that hour, you will be able to update your database to include the previous day s results. They are then updated again at approximately 5pm. These results will use temporary race numbers that start with 9 and end in an X, and these are only available until 3pm updating after 3pm the following day will not pick up the previous days results until the main update at 5pm. You will be able to use these results in the usual way i.e. Query Database, Data Export and Rate Race. The official Raceform race number will overwrite the temporary number when the 5pm update takes place, but any notes or ratings that you add will not be lost or overwritten. The 3 -, 4 - and 5 days ago to date options should be used if recent results are not there, despite a recent download (this is rare.) So, for example, if you are a Flat and Jumps subscriber and the Flat portion of the database is lagging one day behind the Jumps, the 3 days ago to date option will pick up results for both codes of racing, regardless of whether RI thinks it has picked this information up before. Fast Results this option can be activated from the Defaults menu. Results will be fed to you within about half an hour of races being run, these are unvalidated and will end in F when you open them up, plus you will see the latest results at the bottom of the screen in the form of a rolling banner. Old Results This option must only be used as a last resort. If you spot any missing results (from more than a few days ago) you can use this option to download the file that was generated on that day. However, Notebooks and ratings for that day may be incomplete (as these may have been added later) and so it is not recommended that you use this option often. If you do find gaps in your database (extremely rare) please contact us and we will send you the latest CD free of charge. Automatic Updates the option to use if you leave your PC on overnight and you are connected to a network or if you use a broadband internet connection. Instead of updating your Raceform Interactive database manually (via the Update menu), you can add this updating process to the Windows Task Scheduler so that when you arrive at your PC in the morning, your database is bang up to date. To do this in Windows XP go to Start, Settings, Control Panel. Double click on the Control Panel called Scheduled Tasks. Click on Add Scheduled Task. Browse to the Raceform Interactive folder (usually in the Program Files folder of you main hard disk) and select autoupdate. Then follow the instructions to determine how often the updates should take place. It is recommended that you update daily and in the middle of the night, when you are unlikely to need your PC. If your PC is switched off, nothing will happen. In Vista, and Windows 7 click on Start and type Schedule in the Start Search area.

7 Help Contextual help is provided in all parts of the Raceform Interactive programme. Please click on the symbol to obtain more information on that part of RI. Optimising your database Periodically (we recommend at least once or twice a month) your database should be optimised to enhance performance. Click Start/ Programs/Raceform Interactive/Optimise, or click on Optimise in the top menu within the programme itself. Note: The Optimise process will clear out all old (and current) Edecs files. A Quick Optimise takes only a few seconds. A Full Optimise also reindexes the entire database and this process can take 5-30 minutes depending on the performance of your PC. If you do choose to do a full optimise, be aware that this process must not be interrupted as it could irreparably damage your database. It is recommended that you back up any user files (see p.42) before doing an optimise in case there is a problem, such as a power cut. Backing Up saved notes, ratings, lists & queries You can, and should, back up your own ratings, horse and race notes, lists and query extracts to a separate directory on your PC. If you use Own Ratings and Notes, Lists or Queries, you are advised to do this as often as you feel comfortable with. That way, if the programme crashes and needs to be re-installed, all your own input can be restored to a fresh installation in seconds. To launch Backup, please click on the Rate Race menu and select the Maintenance tab. Then click on Do Backup/Restore. Alternatively, close Raceform Interactive, go to the Start menu, then to Programs (All Programs), choose the Raceform Interactive folder and click Backup. Follow the on-screen instructions. You will be asked to specify or create a directory to do this. Make sure that you back up to a completely separate folder (ie not Raceform Interactive) so that the relevant files are secure. It is also recommended that you periodically copy your folder containing the backed up files onto a separate computer or onto a CD in case your whole system crashes. If you don t have many years worth of ratings, notes etc. these files can be ed as an attachment. The backup routine only takes a few seconds. It is advisable that you check that the files have been backed up by going to the target folder using Windows Explorer. If you choose to back up everything, about 20 files should be backed up. database maintenance Restore Uses the reverse of Backup and puts these files back. You will need to back up and restore if, say, you need to re-install a copy of Raceform Interactive or if you have been sent an updated version by Raceform. 5

8 horse & race details 6 Horse & Race Details FINDing horses, Courses, races & meetings Search for a Horse, Raceform Number, Course or Race Date using the Find menu: Horse Reveals the all-in-a-line form for the selected horse (see p. 7). Type in one letter or more and then select the horse. The more letters you type the quicker the selection process will be. You also have the option to activate autocomplete for horse names, which means you are provided with possible matches once you have typed at least 3 characters. This option can be activated in the Defaults menu. Raceform Number These numbers correspond to the numbers used in Raceform s Official paper form books. Course Displays details of each Flat and Jumps racecourse in Great Britain, including maps, admittance charges and median times for races over all distances. Race Date Enter a date in DD/MM/YY format to see all races that took place on that date. Double click on the desired race to view the result. Meeting Search for a day s racing at the click of a button. For example, if you wish to look at the 2010 Lincoln but cannot remember any of the runners, you would use this option and type in Doncaster. The meetings are listed in reverse order (most recent first) and scrolling through the past meetings at any course will allow you to retrieve the race in seconds. Double click on the race to select it. Date Picker By clicking on the calendar icon you can quickly select a date without typing it in. You can toggle through the months by clicking on the < or > character next to the month. Double click on the date to bring up the races for that day. NB the results for the current date are not available until the following day.

9 7 horse & race details HORSE details The individual horse window contains current and previous owners and trainers, Raceform and Official Master Ratings, Speed Ratings, pedigree information (two generations), and a full record of all previous form in a sortable list. Raceform Ratings have a colour-key for quick visual race recognition (Red = Flat Turf, White = Flat All-Weather, Green = Hurdles, Blue = Chase and Light Green = NHF.) Comprehensive print options allow you to create printouts of a horse s past form, including a summary of their career earnings, wins to runs ratio plus all Master Comments, Note-Books and ratings achieved. The screenshots below show the past runs, training, owner and master rating details plus master comments, breeding information and Sales information for Supaseus. Note that all current entries for a horse can be found at the click of a button. Click on Prize Money to bring up a career breakdown of prize money earned by the horse. Click on the career summary button to see a summary of the horse s form broken down by various filters (see p.16). By clicking on any of the horse s past runs, a Notebook window pops up with the Raceform race-reader comments for that race. Double clicking on these runs will open a race result window (see p.9). Click on the Relatives button to show a list of horses who share the same Dam. The Details tab provides owner, trainer & breeder history, all master ratings and age & sex details.

10 horse & race details The Comments tab has the Raceform Master Comment for the horse plus space for any comment you may wish to add. In the Pedigree tab, two generations of breeding are listed. It is possible to double click on a sire or dam to bring up the statistics for the progeny of that horse. The Sales Information tab contains a complete sales history for the horse. 11 RACE details The race result window contains information on going, weather, stalls positions, race times (plus a comparison with the median time for that distance). Also Official Explanations, Stewards Enquiries, In-focus comments about the race, weight for age conditions, SPs and Tote Returns (including over-round calculations), comments in running for all runners, Note-Book comments for all noteworthy performances and all ratings for the race. Use the Maximise button to resize the screen to the number of runners in the race without the need for scrolling up and down. The above example is the race result window for the 2009 running of the Epsom Derby. Previous & Since At the click of a button designed to show each horse s achievements before or after the race date. This feature is particularly useful for assessing the quality of a race, i.e. a horse may finish down the field, but the quality of opposition may well have been of a high calibre. The display will include the ratings that were achieved in these runs. All runs can be double-clicked to take you straight to the race in question. The example below gives a previous and since screen for all the runners in the 2009 Derby. It is also possible to choose any ratings set to display in the Previous and Since windows. Simply go to the Defaults menu and change the setting for Previous / Since Rating Set. To use this function, first click on Since or Previous in the bottom right hand corner of the race result window. 9horse & race details

12 declarations & entries Declarations & Entries Detailed & Summary Declaration Style The decs menu allows you to view all future races (once they have been downloaded via the Update menu) either Overnight declarations, 4-day entries with weights, 5-day entries without weights and all Early Closing Races. For more information about these files and when they are updated, please go to p. 3. For all declarations and entries, you have two display options Detailed and Summary. An example of both displays is shown below:- Both options show the runners in race card order; the last 10 outings for each runner are loaded into the higher memory of your PC. You can reduce this by using the Max Past Runs display box. 10 The race cards have several useful features built into them to make form study easier. These are explained below:- Click on the name of a course to bring up a Course Information window, with a map, draw statistics, median times and more. Double click on the name of a horse to bring up that horse s details. Right-click on a horse to bring up a Diomed spotlight verdict for a horse (available when you update your overnights after 7.30pm on the day before racing) plus a Master Comment for the horse, the Sire Comment for the horse s sire (Flat horses only), your own comments about the horse plus a betting forecast (if available) and a Relatives button which will display all horses who share the same dam.

13 Right-click on the Trainer or Jockey to bring up the stats for that Trainer / Jockey at the course where today s race is being run. Double click on the Trainer, Jockey or Owner (Detailed decs only) to display the full stats for them. Double click on any previous run to bring up the race result window for that race. Ratings in Racecards Four sets of ratings are contained within the Raceform database and these are all incorporated in the declarations window. In the Detailed view, they are all visible, while in Summary view, you can toggle between the ratings using the buttons under SORT in the top menu bar. This booklet contains a section on page 40 which provides a detailed explanation of these ratings sets. The four types of rating included in Raceform Interactive are:- 1) Current Official Ratings (black) for the type of race i.e. Flat Turf, All-Weather, Hurdle, Chase or National Hunt Flat. 2) Raceform Master Ratings, which are colour-coded, using the following format: Red Flat Turf Red text on White All-Weather Green Hurdle Blue Chase Light Green National Hunt Flat 3) Raceform (Split Second) Speed Ratings (grey). 4) Own Ratings (turquoise). Up to four sets of own ratings can be entered and displayed to choose the default rating in the Summary declaration view, please go to Defaults and choose a Primary Ratings Set. For more information about rating a race, please refer to the Rate Race chapter on p. 20. Distance Pull-down Use this pull-down menu to isolate previous form over a specific distance only. Note that this is rounded to the nearest half furlong, so 1m 3f 110 yards is rounded up to 1m 4f, while 1m 90y is rounded down to 1m (there are 220 yards in a furlong.) Navigate Use these buttons to navigate to the next or previous race within the current declarations. declarations & entries 11

14 declarations & entries Sort, Display and Scratch The Sort buttons allow you to sort the race in either saddlecloth or ratings order. BHA will display the Official BHA ratings (these BHA performance ratings are colour coded in the same way as RF ratings when this option is clicked), RF will display the Raceform Master ratings in order of merit, similarly SPD will display the best Speed rating for each horse and Own will display your Own ratings (Set One, although you can specify which set is displayed in the Defaults menu). The Display buttons allow you to change the display to show three different sets of information for each past performance (Detailed declaration style only) Scratch is used to delete a horse from a Dec race. Highlight the horse which you wish to remove by clicking on it with the mouse, and then click on Scratch. The horse will be removed from the race. If you Scratch horses from a Dec race, you will need to save the changes by clicking on Save and giving the race a name of your choice. Otherwise the full race will be displayed when and if you wish to look at the race again. To call up the saved race click on Load and select the file name that you have given the race. You can also scratch several horses at once by clicking on the Multiple button. Sorting by draw double click on any of the stall numbers and the runners will automatically be displayed in draw order. To reverse the order, double click on any stall number again. Print Options the print icon in the main decs window allows you to choose from a variety of print formats. You can either print the race as a Standard report with form, in-line form, comments and notebooks, or you can print off a Racing Post PDF, which is a colour card with the Spotlight verdict. Note that these cards cannot be amended in any way and they are only available for the next day s racing from about 7.30 p.m. onwards. 12 Within the declaration windows itself, there is a print icon which allows you to print out what is on the screen in front of you.

15 double top & List Manager A selection of printouts from within the Decs section of Raceform Interactive Double Top this feature highlights all the horses in the current overnight declarations file who are top-rated on BOTH Speed ratings and Raceform ratings. Double click on the horse in the list to open up the declaration for that race. These Double Top selections can be printed by clicking the icon in the window. declarations & entries List Manager to ensure you never miss a runner The lists you build can be checked against the latest declarations each day. You can create multiple lists based on horses, trainers, jockeys, owners or sire/ dam information. These lists can be checked against the overnights, 4/5 day entries and early closing races. All runners will be flagged up at the click of a button once the declarations have been downloaded. You can also add notes within the List Manager to remind yourself why you added a horse, trainer or jockey to your list. These lists can also be printed by clicking on the icon. 13

16 declarations & entries Noted runners This brings up a list of horses that Raceform s expert race readers have flagged up as horses to follow. You can be sure that our analysts believe that they are capable of running well again. Make sure that you read the notebook comment to see why they were noted. Signposts and 10-year trends For more information on these features, please go to p Top, Collateral & Xtend These tools help you with your form-study: Top a button which instantly identifies top-rated horses based on the day s race conditions. The ratings are broken down by course, distance, going and weight. You can specify the number of days and runs are taken into account. Number of runs means the number of runs based on the selected criteria e.g. 2 runs on the day s going or over the same trip. Weight means within 2lbs of today s weight. Collateral Select any horse in a race and view the collateral form involving all the other runners in the field, based on either direct meetings or via third horses. 17 Jockey Spot & Trainer Spot This useful feature allows you to instantly look at the current form for all the trainers and jockeys in the race that you are analysing, ordered by their RTF figures. RTF stands for Running to Form and is expressed as a percentage figure. A horse that runs within 5lb of its current Master Raceform Rating (or better) is judged to have run to form. Apart from this figure, the full form for the trainer or jockey over the past 14 days is shown, as well as a ratio of wins to runs in that period. Draw Analyser This feature allows you to instantly view the draw stats for each race that you are analysing. Every race over course and distance on the database is analysed to provide you with detailed draw stats for these races, including total wins/runs for each stall number, including a percentage total. This draw information is also displayed as a graph to give you a visual impression of a potential draw bias. You can fine-tune these statistics by using the pull-down menus at the top. These allow you to alter the race distance, minimum number of runners, going, track type, stall position and month/year of race. After setting your parameters, simply click on the Analyse button to re-generate the statistics. NB to see draw stats for any course, please go to Statistics menu. declarations & entries 15

18 declarations & entries Other options from the main decs menu Manual Race Entry Allows you to create races, well before they happen. Look through ante-post markets and see if the betting matches up with the ratings or create mythical match-ups between recent topclass race winners. Early Closing Races All Class 1 and Class 2 races that have declarations available for them in advance of the 5-day stage (e.g. races at Royal Ascot, Cheltenham, the Derby, the Grand National, major sales races) can be downloaded from the Update menu. You can search through these races to see whether, for example, a maiden winner has a Derby entry or to find out what big prizes a trainer has in mind for one of his runners. You can search directly in the Decs window or you can click on the Current Entries button in the horse detail window to retrieve these entries. These files are updated weekly, on a Monday. Horse Career This button provides a full summary of how a horse has performed over its lifetime and these results are filtered to show only today s race type. The figures are broken down into 9 different sections, with a wins to runs breakdown for Runners, SP, Track, Headgear and Favourite. In the Going, Rating, Class and Distance sections, all performances are displayed (up to a maximum of 35), with the most recent on the right. Any row highlighted in red means that the horse is running in a race of the same type, which allows you to make direct comparisons. 16

19 signposts Based on the popular feature in the Racing Post, Signposts gives you clues to the day s form, based on the latest statistics available. These statistics are automatically downloaded with your overnight declarations each day. The following information is provided: Hot Trainers the top trainers (with runners today) based on their performance over the past 14 days. This includes number of wins to runs and an overall strike rate for this period. If you double click on the trainer name, all races in which that trainer has runners today are isolated. Cold Trainers Out of form trainers, shown in days since last win (X for no wins) and number of runners since that trainer last had a winner. Course Trainers Based on trainers with declared runners at any of today s meetings. The trainer name, course, strike rate at the course (wins runs) and overall percentage of winners to runners is listed. You can double click on the trainer to call up the runners entered today. Trainers & Jocks This shows all the top trainer/ jockey combinations with declared runners today. An overall strike rate at the course is displayed along with the trainer s and jockey s individual strike rate for that venue. Please note that double clicking on these combinations will NOT bring up matching runners. First Time Blinkers the name of the horse, the race time & venue plus the trainer s overall record at the course. Double click to isolate the race. Tongue Tied same as first time blinkers. Travellers Check The horses who have travelled furthest to fulfil their engagement today. You can see the number of miles travelled and the trainer name plus their overall course record. Double click the horse to isolate the race. Following Favourites highlights the type of race at each venue which have a winning record for favourites e.g. Newb 2yo Non-H caps This covers the current season, plus the previous four. Hot Jockeys, Cold Jockeys, Course Jockeys see course trainers. One Trick Jockeys Jockeys (excluding amateurs and conditionals) with only ONE ride at a meeting today. Note that with evening racing, a jockey might have one ride at one meeting and a few others elsewhere. Late jockey changes cannot be taken into account for this. declarations & entries 17

20 declarations & entries year trends If you need to know whether a race follows a particular pattern, the 10-year trends feature is a powerful tool that can point you in the right direction. Here you get full details for the last 10 runnings of the corresponding race (where available.) Please note that for many races no data exists and in other cases it is incomplete. This could be due to an abandonment or because a race has changed its name or was previously run on a different course. The example on page 16 shows the 10-year trends for the Grand National run at Aintree in April. The following details are included (L-R): Year of race Form figures coming into the race (last 4 outings, plus season breaks) Name of the winner double click on the name to bring up the horse details window for that horse Age at the time of the run Weight carried in the race BHA Rating If applicable Raceform Rating (RR) Master Rating that the horse had on the day of the race. In brackets is the difference in rating between the winner and the top-rated horse. If the winner was top-rated, a (T) is displayed.
