1 IISA PROGRAMMES IN INSURANCE ACCREDITATION AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING OF IISA (including the College of Insurance) EXAMINATION CREDITS Credit (recognition) may be awarded for prior learning, including examinations that you may have already passed under discontinued IISA qualification routes. These credits can be used as part of your route to the qualifications in the Insurance Programmes, by providing exemption(s) from having to sit the examination for a specific module(s). If you sat for and passed examinations with the Insurance Institute of South Africa (IISA) and/or the College of Insurance (CoI) up to including the March 2006 examinations you should study the requirements below, as specific requirements and arrangements exist for such credits. Unisa CBM agreed to offer the Programmes in Insurance from 2005, when it became obvious to the IISA that the requirements imposed on the IISA/CoI to register as a Private Higher Education Institution were too onerous to achieve. Agreement was reached that the Programmes would be offered by Unisa CBM without any changes during the initial period, while full recognition of academic credits held by individual students would be awarded as module(s) dispensations, to students registering during the 2005 to 2007 academic years. The usual Unisa rules and requirements as apply to applications for exemption, from having to sit the examination, for a specific module(s) largely started applying to these Programmes as well, from Although still more lenient and accommodating than the rules applicable to other qualifications, a number of regulations and limitations have now become applicable and are detailed below. If you hold a qualification (or credits obtained by examination towards one) which you obtained through the IISA, you need to check whether you qualify for exemption(s). A reference table is provided below, as well as the basic regulations that are applicable if the qualification/subject(s) is not reflected in the table. A further table, giving details of subjects that were discontinued by IISA prior to the transfer of the Programmes to Unisa is also available and can be obtained from the Programmes website. If you believe that you may qualify for exemption(s), you should obtain and complete the Application for Accreditation of IISA/CoI Examination Credits (available on request or by download from the Insurance Programmes website It is strongly recommended that you apply for this when first registering as a student with the IISA Programmes in Insurance. This will avoid disappointment at a later stage. You will need to have been fully registered and have paid your tuition fees, before Unisa CBM will consider and process your application for exemption(s). You should note that there is no limit to the number of module(s) credits your IISA/CoI qualification(s) might provide, but you must complete at least 20% of any Programme in Insurance with UNISA CBM in order to be awarded the Certificate by UNISA. If you hold an IISA/CoI qualification which would make you eligible for an exemption in respect of an Insurance Programme module, but do not apply for the exemption before taking and failing the exam, you may only apply subsequently if you had obtained a mark within 10% of the pass mark (i.e. you achieved at least the stated subminimum mark for the examination) at the first examination attempt for the module concerned. Application for exemption(s) must be made with the Programme Co-ordinators detailed below on the specified application form, together with an IISA Extract of Academic Records, supporting the application. Copies of examination result notifications are not acceptable. NB The ultimate decision to award credits towards any module(s) applied for, rests with UNISA and the decision communicated to the student by UNISA CBM is final and binding. Until such time as all the required documentation, as determined by UNISA at its sole discretion, has been obtained and submitted, and until such time as UNISA has advised that any, or all, the applied credits have been granted or otherwise, the student is deemed to be required to comply with all the normal requirements and specifications of the Programme(s) concerned IISA Programmes in Insurance RPL IISA Credits Page 1

2 Requirements: 1. The module(s) concerned must still be examined unchanged in the Unisa syllabus and appear in the cross-reference tables below; 2. The qualification studied for at IISA/CoI or its equivalent must now be available from Unisa CBM; 3. The successful examination must have been passed within the last five years prior to the application, but not later than March 2006; 4. If the module(s) examination was not passed within the last five years, the student needs to prove that he /she continued to gain experience/was actively working in the area(s) covered by the subject matter of the module(s) if it is a practice subject, but this requirement may be waived if it is ruled that it is a theory subject. 5. All subjects discontinued by IISA/CoI prior to the transfer of the Programmes to Unisa CBM will not rank for exemption credits, except if credits are held for the Legal Framework subjects (IISA s 3111, 3211, 3311 or 3411) which were obtained in the IISA examination sessions between September 1999 and March 2003, provided at least two other subjects concomitantly qualify for module(s) exemption credits, or if the applicant can prove that he/she has been actively employed without interruption in the insurance industry since passing the examination and has sat for insurance examinations with the IISA/CoI on at least four occasions during that period.; 6. Applications for credit for any subject for which the IISA/CoI credit was originally awarded by dispensation/exemption will not qualify for exemption in terms of this arrangement, but a separate application for exemption based on Non-IISA examination credits may be submitted, subject to the normal regulations, rules and limitations applicable to Unisa CBM. 7. Any application for exemptions is subject to the normal admission conditions and requirements as specified and published by Unisa CBM in general and the Programmes in Insurance in particular being complied with and that the applicant is granted admission (or re-admission) to the Programmes.
