The SEEREN web site was created to improve the project visibility with updated information with regard to the project conferences & workshops, other events related to SEEREN, Newsletters, Deliverables, SEEREN logo, etc. It serves as a communication tool for the project consortium and a dissemination tool for the project activities and successful results. Since its establishment (before the official start of SEEREN) it s structure and information has been gradually updated to serve the principles of the project. The results of SEEREN are publicly available and provide useful data that could potentially be used to for other initiatives that will contribute to the stability and prosperity of the SEE region. The SEEREN Web site is public and used for the dissemination of the project results. The FTP site is internal and used to exchange documents among partners, and plays the role of the SEEREN documents repository. 4 D02b SEEREN Web/ftp site Page 4 of 12 Preface SEEREN is expected to upgrade and integrate the Internet services and infrastructure of the National Research and Education Networks of SE Europe, in an attempt to ease the digital divide that still separates most of the SEE countries from the rest of the continent. Moreover, the project promotes the cooperation of scientific and educational communities of EU member states with the SE European countries and provides a platform for dissemination and development of next generation Internet technologies in those states that are on course to joining the EU. The project involves the Research and Education Networks of Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, FYR of Macedonia, Greece, Hungary, Romania, Serbia-Montenegro, as well as TERENA and DANTE. The main objectives of the SEEREN project are to: 1. Establish the South-East European (SEE) infrastructure interconnecting the National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) of Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, FYR of Macedonia, Serbia- Montenegro, Greece, Hungary and Romania (called regional NRENs); 2. Interconnect the regional NRENs to the major GÉANT Points of Presence (PoPs) in this area and thus to the Pan-European research network. The major GÉANT PoPs in the region are located in Athens, Budapest, Bucharest, Ljubljana, Zagreb and Vienna; 3. Guarantee the stable operation of the networking infrastructure and interoperability with GÉANT; 4. Serve as a guide for future upgrades, so that all regional NRENs will be able to participate in GÉANT and be part of the European e-science distributed platform; 5. Ease the digital divide that still separates most of the SEE countries from the rest of the continent. Build awareness of IST in SE Europe non-eu countries and serve as a paradigm for bridging the digital divide in other areas. Provide a platform for cooperation of scientific and educational communities of EU Member States with Newly Associated States (NAS) and 3 rd Countries. 6. Investigate additional sources of funding from the EC, from EU States national funds and international organizations that are actively involved in the SEE region, such as UNESCO, NATO, CEENet, UNDP, World Bank, USAID. The expected key results of the project are: 1. NRENs requirements collected and analysed 2. Technical and operational requirements analysed 3. Promotional package available 4. Tenders prepared 5. Suppliers selected 6. Connectivity, equipment and network management contracts signed 7. Final SEEREN topology determined 8. Operation of the regional networking infrastructure offering to all NRENs GÉANT visibility starts 9. Stable network operation accomplished 10. SEEREN workshop proceedings ready The SEEREN project has started its activities on December 2002 and is planned to be completed by the end of June It is led by Dr. Jorge-A. Sanchez-P. of GRNET. Five contractors (GRNET, HUNGARNET-NIIFI, RoEduNet, DANTE and TERENA) and five subcontractors (INIMA, BIHARNET, ISTF/ICTDA, MARNET, AMREJ) participate in the project. The total budget is Euro. The project is funded by the European Commission s Fifth Framework Programme for Research & Technological Development (IST Programme).

The focus of this deliverable is to report on the progress of the SEEREN web and ftp servers and describe the the structure, the information that has been published during the implementation of the project. The Web and FTP site are part of the overall communications system setup in the SEEREN consortium. The Website has IPv4 capability. The results of SEEREN are publicly available and provide useful data that could potentially be used to for other initiatives. What is next in the process to deliver the SEEREN results? Promote the use of SEEREN by informing the appropriate user groups through special events such as organizing workshops, distributing publicity material, delivering presentations at scientific conferences, setting demonstrations in academic events, all aiming at presenting the new opportunities provided by SEEREN. Individual NRENs will carry out complementary promotional activities in their national user communities as well as participate in activities at the European level. Establish relations with organizations that are actively involved in the SEE region, in order to work out common visions towards reducing the "digital divide" in the Region under question, i.e. the information and technological gaps within the region, as well as between the region and European Member States. Look for other possible sources of funding including the Development Assistance Committee (DAC) of the OECD, the Stability Pact and other European programmes such as INTERREG, PHARE and CARDS. Extra funding will be used so as to ensure network's viability beyond the project's lifetime. Assessment of project results. What are the deliverable contents? The FTP site is internal and used to exchange documents among partners, and acts as the project s library. The Web and FTP site are part of the overall communications system setup in the SEEREN consortium. The Web and FTP site together with the mailing lists, documents templates and communication rules agreed constitute the communication infrastructure of the SEEREN consortium. The SEEREN web/ftp site has a public section that is accessible by anyone with a web browser and a secure site that is accessed with a user name/password. Various levels of access rights have been implemented. Both services are accessed from The seeren.org domain is reserved currently by GRNET. Additionally SEEREN setup a one-stop-shop for all the open source tools/applications setup by the SEEREN VNOC to monitor and manage the SEEREN infrastructure is available at In the site one can visit the live SEEREN weathermap, the integrated motitoring modules in NetIS, Nagios, Looking Glass, RequestTracker, SmokePing, cflowd, flowscan and RRGrapher (some areas are password protected). Furthermore SEEREN beneficiary NREN's hosted local SEEREN sites (netiis.rcub.bg.ac.yu, The following is a screenshot of

This section is also used to disseminate the public project results. The structure is: Overview: This section provides a detailed description of the project objectives, technical approach and horizontal activities, with links to the project WPs, as well as GEANT and GRNET. Participants: In this category the role in the project of all the partners is presented with a link to their web sites. The Project: In this category the project description, timetable, deliverables and Work Breakdown Structure are presented. Related: In this category the related material and links are listed. The related section also links to the project results. Results: This category presents the public results of the project. It contains useful data for the region that can be potentially used for other initiatives. Events: This page includes the events that were organized within the framework of SEEREN and links to further information, including the proceedings. Events that SEEREN has been presented, is also included, together with the presentations made. News: Includes the project Newsletters that the SEEREN consortium has produced. The newsletters provide information with regard to the project progress and other related news and constitute an additional dissemination tool for the project. Brochures: Includes the project brochures that have been compiled so as to serve as a tool for the dissemination of the project objectives, its status and project results. Additionally the brochure aims to attract interest of international organizations that are actively involved in the SEE region, the governments within the countries that participate in the project, the industrial world and research & academic communities in Europe and contribute to ensuring the viability of SEEREN beyond the project s lifetime. Press Releases: Includes the project press releases, as well as links to other websites where SEEREN news has been published. SEEREN video: This section includes the videos that were produced during the implementation of the project. Two videos were produced in the framework of the project: The SEEREN video provides an overview of the project, emphasizing on the human network that has committed to assist towards the creation of the R&E Network of SE Europe. The SEEREN video is available on the project website. It was also distributed at the SEEREN inauguration event that was held in Thessaloniki. The SEEREN inauguration event video consists of the key points of the event, made by distinguished invited speakers form the region, the EC and international bodies that activate in SEE. The SEEREN inauguration event video is available on the project website. The video proceedings are also accessible at the events section of the website. The high-level structure of the repository is depicted in the following picture. The SEEREN secure section includes all the deliverables of the project, several reports and other documents that were produced in the framework of the project. The structure of the above documents is in line with the project s structure. Figure 3.
