8/00 Rev MANUAL Installation,Using, page 3 Installing the printer driver The driver package is supplied as a self-extracting archive file. To extract the package, double-click the appropriate file and follow the instructions. Installation or upgrade requires proper user rights granted by the system. Extracting the driver files The printer driver files are contained in a single self-extracting archive file (ending *.exe). You will find eight of those *.exe files in different directories on CD, sorted after operating system, printer brand and language. Each file is stored in it s own directory: Operating system Printer brand Language Directory on the Docu-CD Win95 Avery german \Driver\Win95\Avery\deutsch\ english \Driver\Win95\Avery\english\ Novexx german \Driver\Win95\Novexx\deutsch\ english \Driver\Win95\Novexx\english\ WinNT Avery german \Driver\WinNT\Avery\deutsch\ english \Driver\WinNT\Avery\english\ Novexx german \Driver\WinNT\Novexx\deutsch\ english \Driver\WinNT\Novexx\english\ Table 3: Directory on the Docu-CD containing the self-extracting archive files. Proceed the following steps to extract the driver files: 1. At first choose the directory with the designation of your operating system (Win95 =Windows 95, WinNT = Windows NT 4.0). Then choose the directory with the name of the printer brand (Avery or Novexx), finally open the language directory (english or deutsch) of your choice. Start the *.exe file contained there in. The following window shows up: Fig. 1: Window appearing after opening the self-extracting file. 2. Click on OK. Another window appears. P See figure overleaf
8/00 Rev MANUAL Installation,Using, page 4 Fig. 2: Write the destination directory for the driver files in the input field. 3. Declare a destination directory by typing it to the input field (Fig. 2). 4. Click on Unzip. The Self-Extractor writes the driver files to the designated directory. A non-existing directory will be created. After unzipping all driver files successfully, another window appears (Fig. 3). Fig. 3: All driver files have been successfully unzipped and copied to the designated folder. Press OK. Install a printer driver for the first time Double-click the Add Printer icon in the Printers folder of Windows. Follow the instructions of the installation wizard and choose the directory where the driver files were extracted. The last page of the wizard offers the possibility of printing a test page with the printer. Selecting this options is not recommended: Unlike office printers where default settings of the driver usually match the paper in the printer, label printers require setting up the type and size of the label before printing. (A test page can be printed later from the General page of the printer property sheet.) Updating an existing printer installation. Updating an existing printer installation Open the Printers folder of Windows, and (using the right mouse button) open the properties of the printer that should be updated. On the Details page press the New Driver button. Follow the instructions of the wizard. As some of the driver components may be kept in memory Windows should be restarted. After Windows has restarted, go to the Printers folder. The updated printer has now Copy 2 appended to its name. If required, the original name can be restored. Check version information in the About box of the printer driver to make sure that the driver update was successful.
8/00 Rev MANUAL Installation,Using, page 5 Using the printer driver As printer drivers are background components of Windows, they remain hidden for the user. Their only visible parts are setup property pages to allow configuring the driver. There are two sets of such pages: the printer and the document properties. Printer properties are common for all the users and applications on Windows. These are mostly settings regarding hardware features of the printer (print head resolution, installed options ). The document property pages control properties that can be different for each document. Property page Printer Settings Accessing property pages in Windows 95/98 All printer driver property pages appear together on these Windows versions. They can be accessed either from the Printers system folder or from any application having printer setup implemented. The last of the property pages Printer Settings refers to printer properties. Changes made on this page are stored globally and will have effect for all users and applications. Other property pages control document properties. If called from the Printers folder, document properties will be saved as default settings for the documents, if called from an application, the changes will affect only the current document. Property page Printer Settings Accessing property pages in Windows NT 4.0 The Printer Settings property page can be reached only from the Printers folder. Select the printer to set up, and select Properties. The appearing property sheet contains several standard pages from Windows, and as the last page the Printer Settings page from the printer driver. Proper user rights are required to modify these settings. There are two ways to access the document property pages. By using the Document Defaults in the Printers folder, you can modify base settings for newly created documents. These settings are stored in the profile of the current user. These pages can also be opened by the printer setup feature of most applications. Changes have effect in this case only to the current document.
8/00 Rev MANUAL Installation,Using, page 6 The property pages Printer Settings property page Printer properties can be specified and global features of the printer driver configured. Fig. 1: The Pinter Settings property page (Example: Driver for Avery TTK) Resolution Pressure Roller Cutter Installed Substitution Table Select the resolution of the actual printer. (This option appears only for printers available with different resolution print heads.) Select the type of pressure roller installed on your printer. In case of textile pressure roller the width of the printable area is decreased to 53 mm. (This option appears only for Avery TTK / Novexx Texxtile printers.) Check this options if your printer is equipped with a cutter. The cutter related document properties appear only if this option is checked. (This option appears only for printers with cutter option.) Press this button to open the font substitution dialog box. See below for details about the dialog box. Font substitution is a feature of the printer driver allowing the user to replace some True-Type fonts by printer fonts at print time, while still seeing the True- Type fonts on the screen. Printing with device fonts means the text in the do-

This results in a significant increase of printing speed. Fig. 2: Dialog Box Font Substitution Table opens after pressing the Substitution Table... button. Font Cards The Substitution Table comprises a list of True-Type fonts, and their substitution printer fonts if any defined. The name of the printer font may be preceded by an icon ( ) indicating that the printer font does not exist at the moment. Select a printer font as a substitution of the currently selected True-Type font, or the empty item, to delete a substitution. This combo box contains the list of resident printer fonts and card fonts. Press this button to open the font card installation dialog box. (This option appears only for printers capable to use font cards). Most of the printers are capable of extending their internal fonts by font cards. The cards may contain special symbol fonts (e.g. symbols for textile industry) or special national characters. Use this setup dialog to make the fonts in the font card(s) added to the printer available to Windows applications. Continued overleaf...
8/00 Rev MANUAL Installation,Using, page 8 Left side list box Right side list box About Fig. 3: The font card installation dialog box opens after pressing the Font cards... button. The left side list box shows the names of available font cards for the actual printer. There is an icon left to the name to indicate whether the card is installed and in which card slot. By clicking on the icon it can be toggled between empty and a check-mark if the printer has a single card slot, while for printers with two card slots it can be empty, 0 or 1. The right side list box shows fonts contained in the font card selected. A description of the selected font card can be found at the bottom of the dialog box. Installing a font card: P Refer to the Manual cards, topic section Application for detailed information on installing cards. Open this dialog box, select the name of your font card. Click the icon left to the name. If your printer has only one card slot a checkmark will appear. In case of printers with two card slots the index of the first free card slot will appear ( 0 or 1 ). This dialog limits the number of cards installed to the number of card slots on the printer. If the maximal number of cards has already been selected, one of them must be deselected before a new card can be selected. Press this button to open the about dialog box providing version information.
8/00 Rev MANUAL Installation,Using, page 9 Labels property page Basic document properties can be edited on the page, controlling the media and the placement of printout. Gap: Gap between labels (required only for labels). Direct thermal / Thermal transfer medium: Select a type of medium: Choose thermal transfer if printing on material by using a ribbon, or choose thermal direct if you are using a special thermal paper without ribbon. Adjustments Press this button to open a dialog for shifting of the print image. This dialog box controls placement of the printout on the medium. Fig. 7: The button Adjustments... opens the dialog Label Adjustments. Horizontal Correction Specifies a horizontal displacement of the printout on the label. This setting may be useful to adjust printout to pre-printed media. A negative value will displace to the left and a positive value to the right. This value shifts the printout within the printable area. (e.g. entering 0.1 will move the printout left, but leaves the printable area at place. Items in the printout within the left 0.1 column will not be printed.) Vertical Correction
8/00 Rev MANUAL Installation,Using, page 13 About Specifies a vertical displacement of the printout on the label. This setting may be useful to adjust printout to pre-printed media. Enter a negative value to displace downwards or a positive value to displace upwards. The same rules apply to this displacement as to Horizontal Correction. Top Border Specify a non-printable area at the top of the label. The printer will skip this area with feed speed. Bottom border Specify a non-printable area at the bottom of the label. The printer will skip this area with feed speed. Applications will see a reduced printable area if using this and/or the top border. (Printable Height = Label Height Top Border Bottom Border). Skip Distance Top This option makes possible the usage of very long labels. Windows limits the printer media size to 3.2 meters. Avery / Novexx printers are capable of handling longer labels. To use a very long label specify a label in the media database with the size of the printed area (should be shorter than 3.2 m). Enter the distance from the top of the label to the start of the printed area into this field. Distance from the end of the printed area to the bottom of the label should be entered into the next field. (The real length of the label = Skip Distance Top + Label Height in Media Database + Skip Distance Bottom) Skip Distance Bottom Distance from the end of printed area to the bottom of the label. (The Skip Distance Top and Skip Distance Bottom options are available on selected printers only) Press this button to open the about dialog box providing version information.
8/00 Rev MANUAL Installation,Using, page 14 Graphics property page This page controls how the driver processes color graphics. The driver converts color pictures into black & white (a process called halftoning) for the printer. Depending on the type of graphic, media and halftoning method the quality of printout can vary. The best method for a given type of graphic and medium should be selected by making test prints. Fig. 8: The Graphics property page controls how the driver processes color graphics... Halftoning method One of three halftoning methods can be selected. None No halftoning will be applied. Pixels of pictures will be converted to black or white depending on the value of Contrast. Dithering Processes pictures by using a small pattern. A different pattern can be selected by Rough, Medium or Fine. Error Diffusion Processes pictures by using a random pattern. This method is preferred for photos. Levels of dithering Specifies the level of dithering. Each of the options selects a different dithering pattern. The picture on the Graphics property page is a representation of the selected halftoning method and contrast value. The actual printing result may look differently, depending on printing resolution. Contrast Specifies the darkness of graphics in the document.
8/00 Rev MANUAL Installation,Using, page 15 Fonts property page This page controls how True-Type fonts are printed. Fig. 9: The property page Fonts controls how True Type fonts are printed. Always use True- Type fonts Substitute True- Type fonts Substitute True- Type fonts automatically Select this option to print all True-Type text as graphics. This option gives the best matching between screen and printed output, but also results in slower printing. Select this option to substitute some True-Type fonts by printer fonts. Edit the Font Substitution Table on the Printer Settings page to specify substitution. Select this option to substitute all True-Type fonts by a printer font automatically. For fonts having substitution defined in the substitution table, the specified printer font will be used, for others the printer driver automatically finds the best fitting font. This option gives the best printing performance.
8/00 Rev MANUAL Installation,Using, page 16 Advanced Settings property page This page controls printer settings changeable for each document. Content of this page depends on the features of the given printer. Fig. 10: The content of the property page Printer Settings depends on the features of the used printer Unit Specifies which unit of measurement you wish to use. This setting will have effect on all property pages of the printer driver. Print mode Batch mode: Total surface of the label is printable. In the case of printers in Group A (TTX 600, TLX 604 Eagle), the last label of a print job is only cut (if programmed) when the next print job is carried out; high output volume. 1:1 mode: The initial zones of the label are not printable. All labels in a print job are cut (if programmed); high output volume. Real 1:1 mode: Total surface of labels is printable. All labels are issued (if programmed); reduced output volume. Data compression Select data compression format used to send graphics to the printer. In case of automatic mode the driver uses the compression method that creates the smallest amount of output data.
8/00 Rev MANUAL Installation,Using, page 17 Optimize Graphical Output Mirror Printout Print Speed Feed Speed Printer ID Cut interval Double Cut Distance Job End Flag Label Checking this option will allow the driver to send graphics on the page in several pieces excluding large white areas. Using this option together with Automatic data compression results in the smallest amount of data to be sent to the printer. Check this option to produce mirrored printout. Printout will be mirrored by on the vertical axis. Select print speed. Consider print media, printing technology and required print quality when selecting speed. (This option is not available for all printers.) The printer uses this speed to feed empty labels, and skip unprintable area at the top and bottom of the label. (This option is not available for all printers.) Enter printer ID. Assigning IDs to different printers allow more than one printer to be used on the same port. Specify after how many labels to cut. This and the following two cutting related options appear only if the Cutter Installed option on the Printer Settings page is checked. (This option is available for printers with cutter option.) Specify the distance between double cuts. Check this option to enable marking of job ends. Enabling this feature results in longer labels cut at the end of print jobs. It makes sorting of print jobs easier.
