1 Winter 2010 Note from the director of graduate programs in psychology Alumni spotlight: Kelly Miller, PsyD by Sarah Clark David L Downing, PsyD, ABPP On behalf of the School of Psychological Sciences Faculty and staff, I wanted to register the hope that you had an enjoyable holiday season, and are already looking forward to a brand new term, in a brand new year; ready to embark upon the opportunity to test your mettle in such a way as only graduate studies in professional psychology can so readily challenge. As ever, while I have had an opportunity to meet many of you, I look forward to meeting everyone in the program. Please feel free to avail yourself of my office hours, even if it is to introduce yourself to me. We have highlighted in this Newsletter a number of items from the Faculty, programs, Committees, and students, which we hope will be informative. If you have additional feed-back or suggestions, just let us know. Additionally, there is a locked Suggestion Box in the Graduate Study Area, if you would feel more comfortable rendering this in an anonymous fashion. The months of January and February will bring with them extra doses of angst amongst students, as prospective interns continue to interview and then await their fateful notification from internship sites on the national Match Day. We wish the internship applicants all the best in their interviews and the outcomes. Also, later in the term, first-year, and other, upper-level students will begin the ritual, as old as professional school training, of applying for practica for the up-and-coming academic year. However, we should weigh in with a hearty Not to worry.. as your Clinical Training Department is here to assist throughout the process, and will do whatever it takes to find all applicants an appropriate site. The School of Psychological Sciences reviews and approves new training sites on an on-going basis. Further continued on page two Dr. Miller is a 2003 graduate of UIndy s PsyD.program. She received a B.S. in Business/ Marketing from the University of Cincinnati. In 2006, Dr. Miller began at the UIndy Counseling Center as the training director, and is now Director of the Counseling Center. I had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Miller about her experiences at UIndy. Dr. Miller worked in Advertising for six years before applying for the Clinical Masters program at UIndy. While completing her Masters, she was accepted into the second cohort to go through the PsyD program. While obtaining her degree, Dr. Miller worked as a director and assistant to the president at the Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center. From the beginning, Dr. Miller knew that she wanted to work in a University Counseling Center. She completed practica at Counseling Center sites and an Internship at Indiana University. Working with a university population, said Dr. Miller, keeps me on my toes. She loves being surrounded by students who are at a pivotal time in their lives and being in an environment where education is stressed and new information in the field is readily available. As Director of the UIndy Counseling Center, Dr. Miller has the opportunity to combine her continued on page four
2 Faculty spotlight: Dr. Neil Perdue by Lani Jones This year, the Psychology Department welcomed to the university a new faculty member: Dr. Neil Perdue, one who claims his face can be found on M&M s and owns a bulldog named Abigail Tiger Lilly Love Tank. At Butler University, Dr. Perdue embarked on his academic career as a business major but quickly changed to a communication studies major. This major enabled him to experience numerous interactions with psychologists, and he discovered that many of the communication theories or ideas were based in psychology, which peaked his interest in the field. Dr. Perdue pursued this area of study in graduate school, and he obtained a Master s in Counseling and Counseling Education. Dr. Perdue s experiences in human development intrigued him and influenced his decision to pursue a Ph.D. at Indiana University in Human Development, with a minor in Counseling. His current interests lie in the field of school engagement and disengagement, effects of peers during development, and developmental periods of late childhood through middle adulthood. While attending graduate school, Dr. Perdue listened to approximately books on tapes, ranging from the Harry Potter series to mysteries and spy novels. He and his wife, Heather, travel as much as possible, and he ranked his top three favorite cities as Rome, London, and Dublin. When asked about his doctoral dissertation, Dr. Perdue replied that he enjoyed the experience as much as possible for that type of project. He also stated that consuming the high volume of coffee and caffeine throughout the duration is possibly what continued top of page made the dissertation so enjoyable. He advised future dissertation writers to choose their committees carefully and to take into consideration their fit with their members in regards to personality traits, the ability to assist, and work styles. And as a final piece of advice, Dr. Perdue stated that every good psychologist needs a Yoda in his or her office because when dilemmas arise, such as research questions or issues with your dissertation, all you need to do is squeeze his hand, and Yoda will impart wisdom. PsyD Alumni Reception Friday, February 12, 2010 Schwitzer Student Center From the director continued from page one UIndy Hall A 5 p.m. 7 p.m. more, should you have a particular site in mind which is not in our data base, your Clinical Training Department can help by contacting them and forwarding the necessary paperwork to establish the site as an authorised clinical training facility. Additionally, Friday, 12 February and Saturday, 13 February are the days when the SoPS welcomes the applicants for the entering class of 2010 to our program. I want to thank everyone, in advance, for the efforts in this most important arena. The logistics are quite daunting, and you can be sure to hear from Margie Keaton, PsyD, our Director of Student Services, regarding on-going arrangements, as well as requests for assistance. One of the best advertisements [my apologies] for the SoPS is, of course, our student body complete with a most activist student governance structure: the Graduate Psychology Association. The participation of students in the admission interview days has been extremely helpful in the past, and I hope that many of you will consider volunteering to help this year as in years past. 2
3 Dr. Anastasia Rush Athens campus Adjunct spotlight: Dr. William Kallman by Jenna Cacciola Dr. Kallman has taught undergraduate classes at UIndy for the past seven years; occasionally, he substitutes for professors and teaches graduate level classes. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. in Biological and Clinical Psychology from the University of Georgia. He taught at the Virginia Commonwealth University for ten years before coming to UIndy. Throughout his career, he has also done consulting work at a juvenile center and state hospitals. His published work includes writing chapters in the Handbook of Behavioral Therapy and the Handbook of Behavioral Assessment. He has worked in the field of forensic psychology for 25 years. In the future, Dr. Kallman would like to teach gestalt psychology as an experiential growth course to foster learning and development in training psychologists. Dr. Kallman wants students to know he is always available to them as a resource, or to serve as a committee member for dissertation. He also encourages students to contact him if they are interested in becoming involved in his research. As of June 1 st, 2009, Anastasia P. Rush, PhD, has been appointed Chair of the Psychological Sciences Department of the University of Indianapolis, Athens Campus. Dr Rush attended the University of North Florida, Pepperdine University, the University of Florida and the Villarreal International University, in the fields of Psychology. She worked 28 years in the State of Florida, where she held the position of Director of the Mental Health Center for 22 years (Baker Co.). She has received many honors for governmental Pilot Programs, with the highest honor to be appointed by the Governor of Florida, at the Governor s Constituency for Children Board. Upon her return to Greece, Dr Rush established the Hellenic Branch of Employee Assistance Professionals Association Int. (EAPA), opened the first Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) company in Greece and was hired as a Professor in the Greek Police Academy. In addition, Dr Rush is a Board Member of the Foundation for the Protection of Minors in Athens (Ministry of Justice) and a registered Forensic Examiner in the areas of Juvenile and Family Law. She is also the owner of a Psychotherapy Center in Glyfada. Striving for academic excellence and optimal department functioning, Dr Rush envisions promoting Uindy students academic endeavors to a life-transforming experience. By blending her international academic and professional experience with the Greek cultural heritage, Dr Rush s ultimate goal is to bridge these two elements, for the benefit of Uindy Psychology graduates. Providing for varied practicum training sites and ensuring quality in teaching, the Psychological Sciences Department aims at best preparing students for the complexity of challenges they will be facing as young professionals, in the cross-cultural demands of today s societies. His claims to fame are that PsychToday cited him as being fundamental in the start of research on seasonal affective disorder, and he was once quoted in National Enquirer. Fun facts about Dr. Kallman include: he was classmates with the editors of the Comprehensive Handbook of Psychopathology we use in Advanced Psychopathology, he interned at the same site as Dr. Wall and Dr. Essman at the University of Mississippi Center, and Dr. Hansel had an internship at VCU while Dr. Kallman was teaching there. 3
4 Dr. Kelly Miller continued from page one administrative experience with her love for seeing clients, and she continues to supervise students who work at the Counseling Center. When asked what advice she has for students, Dr. Miller emphasized finding your passion. Get an idea of what you love to do, and expand on it, she said. "Finding something you are passionate about makes the process of developing and pursuing your niche in the profession a much more rewarding and enjoyable experience." She also spoke about the importance of balancing family and school. Dr. Miller had her daughter Haley, now 8 years old, just before going on Internship. She also has a 7 month old daughter, Ava, and a husband, Dan. The program can be very demanding, but keep in mind your values, which for me, includes family. Finding that balance can be hard but is very important, explains Dr. Miller. Madame presidente by Jenna Cacciola Kristin Thurman, a 3rd year in the Psy.D. program, is the current president of GPA. Her vision for GPA is for students to recognize the resources and usefulness of the club. She believes this is especially important for 1st year students, as the club can provide an instant social network, social support, and information about Indy and the program in general. Kristin believes helping individuals realize the resources GPA can provide is of utmost importance because often times, people do not know what resources to ask for. For example, people often forget about the library GPA has created in the Grad continued top of page Lounge. Currently, there are numerous books, files, and other resources, yet people do not always know they can ask for more resources, such as treatment planning books. She explained that GPA has extra money for such resources, therefore, she hopes to spread the word that if there is a resource you truly want, that GPA can provide it for you. She also hopes to emphasize the importance of utilizing our alumni network and joining LinkedIn, as alumni can provide resources for jobs after graduation, or extra research and assessment opportunities while in the program. Kristin recently put up a list of GPA officers and their addresses in the Grad Lounge, and hopes to add pictures soon to put a face to the names of the officers. She hopes this will make it easier for students to approach officers and ask them questions about GPA and the program in general. Upcoming events for the Winter semester are another Blood Drive, fundraising activities (current ideas are bake sales, a silent auction, and an Easter egg hunt for children and their families), and the Social Committee is beginning to plan prom. She hopes the M.A. students will become more involved with the club, and wants them to realize that GPA offers M.A. students the same resources as the Psy.D. students. The club has also discussed forming an alliance with the undergraduate Psychology Club and Psi Chi to have co-fundraising projects, develop mentoring relationships, and to provide each other with resources.
