2 Introduction to Mailbox Restore for Microsoft Exchange This chapter provides an introduction to Mailbox Restore for Microsoft Exchange (Mailbox Restore) and serves as an overview of the product. It describes the relationship between AppAssure 5 and Mailbox Restore as well as key features of Mailbox Restore. This chapter consists of the following topics: About Mailbox Restore for Microsoft Exchange on page 3 Mailbox Restore for Microsoft Exchange Key Concepts on page 5 About AppAssure 5 on page 8 AppAssure 5 Core Technologies on page 8 About Mailbox Restore for Microsoft Exchange Mailbox Restore for Microsoft Exchange is a comprehensive recovery program that works with AppAssure 5 and the AppAssure 5 Local Mount Utility (LMU) to recover Exchange items, from a full data store to a single message. The recovered Exchange item comes from an AppAssure 5 recovery point. When you install the AppAssure 5 Agent on an Exchange server and protect the server with an AppAssure 5 Core, the Exchange items stored on that server can be recovered using Mailbox Restore. Introduction to Mailbox Restore for Microsoft Exchange 3

The following diagram depicts the Mailbox Restore workflow for recovering an Exchange item. Figure 1. Mailbox Restore workflow diagram Mailbox Restore uses AppAssure 5 and the LMU to access the recovery point containing the data store that you want to search and use to recover items. After you open the recovery point with Mailbox Restore, you can search for any combination of criteria, such as names of mailboxes or folders, across one or multiple Exchange database (.edb) files. The Outlook-like user interface provides a preview pane, where you can view the message or item in full before performing a recovery. The items available for recovery coincide with the folders found in Outlook, as described in the following table. Item Calendar Contacts Deleted Items Drafts Inbox Journal Junk News Feed Notes Outbox RSS Feeds Sent Items Suggested Contacts Description Contains appointments scheduled in the Outlook Calendar. Contains saved contact information such as addresses, phone numbers, and mailing addresses. Contains items from the Outlook Deleted Items folder. Contains items from the Outlook Drafts folder. Contains items from the Outlook Inbox, including all folders created by the account user. Contains entries from the Journal folder. Contains items from the Junk folder. Contains items from the RSS Feeds folder. Contains items from the Notes folder. Contains items from the Outlook Outbox folder. Contains items from the Outlook RSS Feeds folder. Contains items sent from the Outlook Sent Items folder. Contains Contacts suggestions received. 4 Introduction to Mailbox Restore for Microsoft Exchange

Item Sync Issues Tasks Description Contains errors and warnings received by the Outlook account. These items are commonly used for troubleshooting purposes. The folder contains the following subfolders: Conflicts Local Failures Server Failures Contains items from the Outlook Tasks folder. After you identify the item you want to recover, you can restore it to one of the following destinations: Original location Alternate location PST file Mailbox Restore for Microsoft Exchange Key Concepts Mailbox Restore features several key concepts that contribute to a successful Exchange-item recovery, such as e-discovery and differential restore. Because you use AppAssure 5 for backup and disaster recovery, every Microsoft Exchange data store benefits from mountability and integrity checks, ensuring that your recovered data can be mounted and recovered and is free of corruption. The key concepts of Mailbox Restore include the following: Exchange Data Store Search on page 5 E-Discovery and Creating PST Output on page 6 Elimination of Brick-Level Mailbox Backups on page 6 Reduced Disk and Server Space on page 6 Differential Restores on page 6 Outlook Message and Exchange Item Previews on page 7 Data Store Corruption Checks on page 7 Data Store Mountability Confirmation on page 7 Exchange Data Store Search Mailbox Restore lets you search through large amounts of data to find individual items for recovery. You can search any Exchange data store by field and keyword within mailboxes, messages, calendars, tasks, notes, and folders to quickly and easily find the item that you want to recover. Introduction to Mailbox Restore for Microsoft Exchange 5

E-Discovery and Creating PST Output Mailbox Restore identifies for e-discovery with the simple search of a keyword, phrase, or user name and then performs a complete scan of the Exchange data store for messages that meet your criteria. After you identify the file you want to recover, you have the option of exporting it either to a folder or to a PST. A PST satisfies the native file format requirement for legal and compliance e- discovery. Elimination of Brick-Level Mailbox Backups Although AppAssure 5 backs up all volumes in an Exchange server, Mailbox Restore performs item-level recovery without using Microsoft Exchange Server Mailbox Merge (ExMerge) to extract the data or Microsoft Recovery Storage Groups to mount the Exchange Database. After you use the Local Mount Utility (LMU) to mount an AppAssure 5 recovery point, Mailbox Restore can recover items from any unmounted.edb file without performing expensive and time-consuming brick-level backups that only back up one mailbox at a time. Reduced Disk and Server Space Because Mailbox Restore is bundled with the AppAssure 5 Core, Mailbox Restore requires little disk space for message-level recovery. Rather than copying the entire Exchange data store to perform a recovery, it accesses the.edb file from the AppAssure 5 recovery point, which eliminates the need for a dedicated Exchange server to restore messages. Differential Restores Mailbox Restore lets you perform a differential restore, restoring only the differences between a rolled back data store and the latest recovery point. To perform a differential restore, Mailbox Restore synchronizes the unmounted.edb file with the online server. With a differential restore, you can synchronize the data store after a rollback or recovery from a backup as well as populate an empty database. 6 Introduction to Mailbox Restore for Microsoft Exchange

Outlook Message and Exchange Item Previews With Mailbox Restore, you can preview the contents and attributes, as well as attachments, of a message or Exchange item in their entirety before recovering, which lets you confirm that you have selected the correct item. Additionally, you have full access to calendar items, tasks, notes, and so on for viewing and recovery. The user interface leverages Outlook functionality to provide a preview pane and lets you browse mailboxes, messages, and other Exchange items. Data Store Corruption Checks Mailbox Restore works with AppAssure 5 to perform a physical integrity check on your Exchange data store to identify issues before they become more serious. This integrity check scans the data store for corruption and ensures that the data you recover is in a healthy state. The physical integrity check is a manual process that is available from the menu bar in the Mailbox Restore user interface. To conduct a physical integrity check, Mailbox Restore and AppAssure 5 scan and validate each individual page of the.edb file. During the integrity check, if Mailbox Restore detects corruption in the.edb file, only the healthy portion of the file is available for recovering Exchange items. Data Store Mountability Confirmation Every time you mount a recovery point, AppAssure 5 conducts a mountability check for corruption. Because the Exchange data store you want to open is included in the recovery point, the test ensures that Mailbox Restore is able to access the item that you want to recover. 12 About AppAssure 5 AppAssure 5 sets a new standard for unified data protection by combining backup, replication, and recovery in a single solution that is engineered to be the fastest and most reliable backup for protecting virtual machines (VM), physical machines, and cloud environments. AppAssure 5 combines backup and replication into one integrated and unified data protection product that also provides application awareness to ensure reliable application data recovery from your backups. AppAssure 5 is built on the new, patent-pending True Scale architecture which delivers the fastest backup performance with very aggressive, near-zero recovery time objectives (RTO) and recovery point objectives (RPO). AppAssure 5 combines several unique, innovative, and breakthrough technologies: Live Recovery Recovery Assure Universal Recovery True Global Deduplication These technologies are engineered with secure integration for cloud disaster recovery and deliver fast and reliable recovery. With its scalable object store, AppAssure 5 is uniquely capable of handling up to petabytes of data very rapidly with built-in global deduplication, compression, encryption, and replication to any private or public cloud infrastructure. Server applications and data can be recovered in minutes for data retention and compliance purposes. Today's legacy backup tools and first generation VM backup tools are inefficient and ineffective. The outdated backup tools lack the ability to handle large-scale data and do not offer the level of performance and reliability needed for protecting businesscritical applications. Combine this with complex and mixed IT environments and it presents an administrative challenge for IT professionals and vulnerability of system data. AppAssure 5 addresses this complexity and inefficiency through our core technology and support of multi-hypervisor environments including those running on VMware vsphere and Microsoft Hyper-V, which comprise both private and public clouds. AppAssure 5 offers these technological advances while dramatically reducing IT management and storage costs... AppAssure 5 Core Technologies Details about the core technologies of AppAssure 5 are described in the following topics. 8 Introduction to Mailbox Restore for Microsoft Exchange

. Live Recovery Live Recovery is instant recovery technology for VMs or servers. It gives you nearcontinuous access to data volumes on virtual or physical servers. You can recover an entire volume with near-zero RTO and an RPO of minutes. AppAssure 5 backup and replication technology records concurrent snapshots of multiple VMs or servers, providing near instantaneous data and system protection. You can resume the use of the server directly from the backup file without waiting for a full restore to production storage. Users remain productive and IT departments reduce recovery windows to meet today's increasingly stringent RTO and RPO service-level agreements. Recovery Assure Recovery Assure lets you perform automated recovery testing and verification of backups. It includes, but is not limited to, file systems, Microsoft Exchange 2007 and 2010, and different versions of Microsoft SQL Server 2005, 2008, 2008 R2, and Recovery Assure provides recoverability of applications and backups in virtual and physical environments, and features a comprehensive integrity checking algorithm based on 256-bit SHA keys that check the correctness of each disk block in the backup during archiving, replication, and data seeding operations. This ensures that data corruption is identified early and prevents corrupted data blocks from being maintained or transferred during the backup process. Universal Recovery Universal Recovery technology gives you unlimited machine restoration flexibility. You can restore your backups from physical to virtual, virtual to virtual, virtual to physical, or physical to physical, and carry out bare metal restores to dissimilar hardware; for example, P2V, V2V, V2P, P2P, P2C, V2C, C2P, C2V. It also accelerates cross-platform moves among virtual machines; for instance, moving from VMware to Hyper-V or Hyper-V to VMware. It builds in applicationlevel, item-level, and object-level recovery: individual files, folders, , calendar items, databases, and applications. With AppAssure 5, you can also recover or export physical to cloud, or virtual to cloud. Introduction to Mailbox Restore for Microsoft Exchange 9

True Global Deduplication AppAssure 5 provides true global deduplication that dramatically reduces your physical disk capacity requirements by offering space reduction ratios exceeding 50:1, while still meeting the data storage requirements. True Scale inline block-level compression and deduplication with line speed performance, along with built-in integrity checking, prevents data corruption from affecting the quality of the backup and archiving processes. 10 Introduction to Mailbox Restore for Microsoft Exchange

3 Preparing to Use Mailbox Restore for Microsoft Exchange This chapter provides instructions on what you need to do to prepare your machine for using Mailbox Restore for Microsoft Exchange (Mailbox Restore). It describes the system requirements and other prerequisites. This chapter includes the following topics: Mailbox Restore System Requirements on page 11 About Installing Microsoft Outlook on page 13 Granting the Required Permissions in Microsoft Exchange on page 13 About the Local Mount Utility on page 14 Prerequisites for Mailbox Restore on page 17 About Navigating Mailbox Restore on page 18 Mailbox Restore System Requirements Mailbox Restore is included with the AppAssure 5 Core and works with the AppAssure 5 Agent, the Local Mount Utility (LMU), and Microsoft Outlook to complete an Exchange item recovery. To recover an Exchange item, you use the LMU to open an AppAssure 5 recovery point of the Exchange data store, which Mailbox Restore can then access. If you choose to restore the item to its original location, Mailbox Restore then exports it to the online Exchange server to complete the recovery. For a successful recovery, all of these products must be compatible with each other. This user guide assumes that, as an AppAssure 5 customer, you already have the AppAssure 5 Core service installed on a core machine and that the AppAssure 5 Agent service is installed on and protecting your Exchange server. The version of Microsoft Exchange installed on the server must be compatible with Mailbox Restore. Mailbox Restore supports the following versions of Microsoft Exchange: Exchange 2010 Exchange 2007 Preparing to Use Mailbox Restore for Microsoft Exchange 11

If you attempt to use Mailbox Restore to open an Exchange data store that was created in an unsupported version of Exchange, you receive a message that prompts you to copy the Exchange libraries. Clicking OK opens Mailbox Restore, but the data store is not available. Libraries not created in Exchange 2010 or Exchange 2007 are not compatible with Mailbox Restore. Mailbox Restore supports the following operating system versions on the AppAssure 5 Core and AppAssure 5 Agent with the associated, supported versions of Exchange: AppAssure 5 Core Windows Server 2012 Windows 7 64-bit Windows 8 64-bit Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit Windows Server bit AppAssure 5 Agent with Exchange 2010 Windows Server 2008 SP2 Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit AppAssure 5 Agent with Exchange 2007 Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Windows Server 2008 R2 Windows Server 2008 SP2 Windows Server 2008 Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 Windows Server 2003 SP2 AppAssure 5 Core and LMU installers require.net Framework 4.0 (x64, x86). AppAssure 5 Core machines using 32-bit operating systems are not supported. For more information, see Exporting an Entire Exchange Mailbox or Data Store for Recovery on page 48. Dismount the recovery point after recovery is complete. For more information, see Dismounting a Recovery Point using the Local Mount Utility on page 27. Roadmap for Recovering a Microsoft Exchange Mailbox or Data Store In Mailbox Restore, an advanced export recovers the whole mailbox or data store, depending on your selection, and avoids the time-consuming process of having to manually search and select each item that you want to recover. Performing an advanced export is helpful if you need to recover many items from the same mailbox or data store; for example, in the case of a severe outage or data loss where every mailbox within a data store must be fully recovered. Recovering an Exchange mailbox or data store involves performing the following tasks: Mount the AppAssure 5 recovery point and launch Mailbox Restore. For more information, see Mounting an AppAssure 5 Recovery Point and Launching Mailbox Restore Using the Local Mount Utility on page 24. Export the mailbox or data store you want to recover to a mailbox or folder. For more information, see Exporting an Entire Exchange Mailbox or Data Store for Recovery on page 48. Close the data store after recovery is complete. For more information, see Exporting an Entire Exchange Mailbox or Data Store for Recovery on page 48. Dismount the recovery point after recovery is complete. For more information, see Dismounting a Recovery Point using the Local Mount Utility on page 27. Using Mailbox Restore for Microsoft Exchange 23

Roadmap for Performing a Differential Restore When circumstances require you to recover Exchange data from an AppAssure 5 recovery point, time is of the essence and access to the appropriate data is critical. A differential restore lets you identify the differences between the offline data store in the recovery point and the online data store on the Exchange server. Performing a differential restore involves completing the following tasks: Mount the AppAssure 5 recovery point and launch Mailbox Restore. For more information, see Mounting an AppAssure 5 Recovery Point and Launching Mailbox Restore Using the Local Mount Utility on page 24. Export the differences between the backed-up data store and the online data store. For more information, see Exporting the Differences Between Backed-Up and Online Data Stores on page 49. Common Mailbox Restore Procedures Refer to the following sections for instructions on completing common mailbox restore procedures: Mounting an AppAssure 5 Recovery Point and Launching Mailbox Restore Using the Local Mount Utility on page 24 Copying Exchange Libraries to the Local Mount Utility Machine on page 25 Opening an Additional Exchange Data Store on page 26 Closing an Exchange Data Store in Mailbox Restore on page 26 Dismounting a Recovery Point using the Local Mount Utility on page 27 Mounting an AppAssure 5 Recovery Point and Launching Mailbox Restore Using the Local Mount Utility If the Exchange item you want to recover is located in a data store protected by AppAssure 5, you can automatically launch Mailbox Restore and open the data store by mounting the recovery point of the data store in the Local Mount Utility (LMU). If you want to recover an Exchange item from an unmounted database, or a data store that cannot be found in an AppAssure 5 recovery point, see Searching for an Exchange Item on page 29. Complete the steps in the following procedure to mount an AppAssure 5 recovery point of an Exchange data store using the LMU. 24 Using Mailbox Restore for Microsoft Exchange

To mount an AppAssure 5 recovery point and launch Mailbox Restore using the Local Mount Utility 1. From the Core machine, open the Local Mount Utility. The localhost recovery points automatically load into the main view. 2. Expand the recovery point that contains the item that you want to recover. 3. Expand the drive that contains the Exchange data store you want to recover. 4. Right-click the data store, and then click Open database for recovery. NOTE: If you are opening the database from a non-core machine and a message displays prompting you to copy the Exchange libraries (DLLs), see Copying Exchange Libraries to the Local Mount Utility Machine on page 25. Mailbox Restore automatically launches and opens the data store. Copying Exchange Libraries to the Local Mount Utility Machine The Local Mount Utility (LMU) lets you mount a recovery point from an AppAssure 5 Core machine or remotely from any non-core machine. When you mount and open a database using the LMU on a machine with the AppAssure 5 Core installed, the Core automatically downloads the necessary Exchange libraries (DLLs) from the protected Exchange server; however, when you mount and open a database using the LMU on a non-core machine, the correct DLLs may not be present, and you may need to manually copy them from the Exchange server. The DLLs on the machine using the LMU must match the version of Exchange in which the database was created; for example, if the database you want to open was created in Exchange 2007, the DLLs on the non-core machine must contain DLLs that correspond to Exchange If you were prompted to copy the Exchange libraries because you are opening the database using the LMU on a non-core machine, complete the steps in the following procedure. To copy Exchange libraries to the Local Mount Utility machine 1. From the Copy Exchange 2007 or 2010 DLLs window, enter the name or IP address of the Exchange server from which you want to copy the DLLs, and then click Browse. 2. Enter the credentials for the machine on which Exchange is installed. 3. Specify the location in which you want to search for the DLLs (for example, the Bin subfolder in the Exchange Server folder), and then click OK. Mailbox Restore searches the folder for compatible DLLs. The results appear on the Copy Exchange 2007 or 2010 DLLs window. 4. If the DLLs are compatible, click Get Files. 5. If the DLLs are not compatible, click OK on the Error dialog box, and then repeat Step 1 through Step 3 as necessary. Using Mailbox Restore for Microsoft Exchange 25

Opening an Additional Exchange Data Store You can open an additional data store while Mailbox Restore is open; for example, if you learn the item you want to recover is not in the first data store you opened. However, if the additional data store is not located on the same Exchange server as the first data store, and therefore not backed up within the same recovery point, you must repeat the procedure Mounting an AppAssure 5 Recovery Point and Launching Mailbox Restore Using the Local Mount Utility on page 24 to access the new data store. Complete the steps in the following procedure to open an additional data store from the same recovery point. This task describes how to open a data store from a recovery point that is currently mounted. To mount a new recovery point, see Mounting an AppAssure 5 Recovery Point and Launching Mailbox Restore Using the Local Mount Utility on page 24. To open an additional Exchange data store 1. On the Mailbox Restore home page, click File. 2. Click Open Database. 3. Next to the Exchange data store file text box, click the ellipses (...) to locate the.edb file within the mounted recovery point. 4. After locating the.edb file, click Open. The Exchange data store file path, Log File Path, and Database System Path text boxes automatically populate with the location of the file. 5. In the Open Exchange database file dialog box, click Open. The data store file opens and is available for you to recover the data it contains. Closing an Exchange Data Store in Mailbox Restore After you finish recovering the Exchange item, close the data store. If you do not explicitly close the data store, it remains open the next time you launch Mailbox Restore. Maintaining a clean environment by only opening databases that you are using for recovery could prevent future technical issues. Complete the steps in the following procedure to close the Exchange data store using Mailbox Restore. To close an Exchange data store in Mailbox Restore From the Mailbox Restore home page, click the File menu, select Close Database, and then select the data store that you want to close. The data store closes, and Mailbox Restore remains open. 26 Using Mailbox Restore for Microsoft Exchange

Dismounting a Recovery Point using the Local Mount Utility After you finish recovering your data and you close the Exchange data store, you should return to the Local Mount Utility (LMU) and dismount the recovery point. If you do not dismount the recovery point, it remains mounted on the Core after you close the LMU. Maintaining a clean environment by mounting only recovery points that are in use could prevent future technical issues. Complete the steps in the following procedure to dismount a recovery point on a remote core using the LMU. To dismount a recovery point using the Local Mount Utility 1. From the machine on which the LMU is installed, double-click the Local Mount Utility desktop icon to launch the program. 2. From the main Local Mount Recovery screen, click Active mounts. The Active Mounts window opens and displays all mounted recovery points. 3. Do one of the following: To dismount one recovery point, select a recovery point you want to dismount, and then click Dismount. To dismount all mounted recovery points, click Dismount all, and then click Yes in the Dismount All dialog box to confirm. 4. To close the Active mounts window, click the X in the upper-right corner. 5. To close the LMU, click the X in the upper-right corner of the Local Mount Utility window. Using the Mailbox Restore Profile Wizard The Profile Wizard lets you create, edit, and remove Outlook profiles directly from within Mailbox Restore. The Profile Wizard is only available if Microsoft Outlook is present on the machine on which Mailbox Restore is installed, for example, the Core. For more information about the Microsoft Outlook requirements, see About Installing Microsoft Outlook on page 13. Creating an Outlook Profile in Mailbox Restore Mailbox Restore lets you create, edit, and delete Outlook user profiles. This ability is useful if you have multiple profiles for one user, if there is more than one employee working from a single computer, or if you want to create a new profile for your recovered items.
