1 Master in Clinical Nursing - Critical Care Nursing Introduction: Health care is undergoing dramatic changes at a speed that makes it almost impossible to remain current and proactive. The chaos and multiple challenges facing health care providers and consumers are evident in critical care where new treatment modalities and technologies interface with a continued strive for quality and positive outcomes. Therefore, the critical care nurses practice in an environment that demands the integration of high level cognitive, psychomotor, humanistic and problem solving skills in order to provide safe and efficient quality care. In Saudi Arabia, faculties of nursing are the main pool for professional nurses who are expected to be prepared to work in complex and challenging health care environments. Moreover in recent years, due to the increased acuity of the disease and the economic forces nearly all hospitals are undergoing restructuring, reorganization and redesigning to meet the increased market demand for creating new acute and critical care settings with a need for more nurses working in those areas assuming new and challenging nursing role. In response, a rapid intense increase for developing critical care specialty has emerged. Therefore, without the strong academic preparation, which is built on a caring focus, critical thinking, multidisciplinary and research-based practice, and the continuing education, these efforts will not come true. Critical care nursing specialization is a valuable tool in promoting excellence of care for critically patients, by providing an international and interdisciplinary forum, critical care nursing specialization encourages dissemination and exchange of research findings, sharing of experience and ideas, and develops the knowledge and skills essential to good critical care nursing practice.

2 Critical Care Nursing - Study Plan The Study Program consists of the courses in addition to Clinical Research Project that will have to be prepared. 5 Summary syllabus of the courses First Semester Nursing Research and Evidence-Base Practice Number Credit(s) 2 E learning: web CT Nursing staff This course design to provide the student the overall introduction to fundamental concept in nursing research. During the course, the student will learn the principles of research designs, how to formulate and justify a research idea, collection of research data. The course also helps student to analyzing qualitative and quantitative data, and using research finding in nursing practice and understanding research utilization and evidence- based practice in addition to the stages, barriers and strategies to facilitate evidence based practice in nursing. Nursing Informatics Number Credit (s) 2 E learning: web CT This course is designed to introduce the students with emerging field of informatics and it's relevancy to modern healthcare systems. The course will explore the health management

6 information system as an important component of the health system, and its practical utilization for planning, management and monitoring nursing and/ health care activities. Also it will examine the ways in which information technologies may be used to support nursing care delivery. Students will also explore computer technology, tools of internet and world wide web with focus on selected computer applications utilized in data processing and management. The student will also examine the impact of informatics on administration, clinical practice, and research, and apply the knowledge and skills to their field of work. Biostatistics Number Credit (s) 1 none E learning: web CT The course will introduce the students to the role of statistics in nursing care delivery and create awareness for acquiring an understanding of the statistical principles and method used in the health field. The student will explore the nature, sources, types, collection of data needed for planning, and management of health care activities. As well, the course will focus on the purposes and ways of handling, organizing, managing, and summarizing health data.. The students will also explore the impact of descriptive and health facility indicators on administration, clinical practice, and health research in the nursing field Legal Aspects and Ethical Issue in Nursing Number Credits 1 none E-Learning Web CT available

7 This course is geared towards enhancement of candidate knowledge about ethical issues and legal aspects confronting nursing practices. Current issues in ethics are considered in practicing nursing. Laws controlling nursing practices, resolving ethical dilemma, and using ethical and legal principles are taken into consideration. Quality Improvement Number Credit (s) 2 The course describes the history of quality management and the evolution of total quality management (TQM), a philosophy seeking to care. TQM provides the initial framework that nurses can implement according to their organizational needs. This course examines the role of nursing management in relationship to the concepts of quality and risk. Nursing Education Number Credit (s) 2 This course is designed for candidates enrolled in the preparatory core courses.. Emphasis is concerned with the components of the educational spiral and recognizing the need for developing proper educational strategies according to learner s needs. The course will also emphasize on the

8 principles of curriculum development and reconstruction for critique and developing educational programs for nursing and nursing services Second Semester Critical Care Nursing I Number Credit (s) 9 Core s The course provides the candidate with opportunities to apply and integrate nursing knowledge, technical skills, while providing nursing care for critically ill patients, Also provides opportunities to develop comprehensive decision making, apply nursing knowledge related to assessment, monitoring, intervention, health promotion and comfort for Critically ill patient. The concept of critical care is integrated with evidence base practice. Advanced Critical Care Health Assessment Number Credit (s) 2 Core s This course is designed to equip the candidate with effective of clinical examination skills. It includes discussion and skills practice with the objective of developing skill for doing thorough physical examination, developing communication skills for client history taking and

9 interviewing. The course emphases also on training candidate to recognize deviations from normal and appropriate intervention. Pathophysiology of Critical Illness Number Credit (s) 1 Core s This course is designed to examine a range of severe disturbances to health, and associated treatment modalities, that occur in patients in critical care areas with particular emphasis on clinical assessment, data analysis and clinical decision making for patients experiencing acute and severe illness or injury. Clinical Pharmacology Number Credit (s) 2 Core s This course provides information about the common critical care drugs used in life threatening condition with special emphasis on the precautions that should be taken into consideration.

10 Third Semester Critical Care II Number Credit (s) 9 Critical Care I This course is designed to apply and integrate nursing knowledge to provide competent nursing care for increasingly complex critically ill patients and their family members. Provides the opportunity to further develop comprehensive assessment abilities, monitoring skills and clinical decision making and to create partnerships with patients, family members and other members of heath care team. Critical Care Medicine Number Credit (s) 1 This course focuses on knowledge related to pathophysiology and therapies to be employed by candidate during caring for acutely or critically ill patients having medical complex health problems.

11 Critical Care Surgery Number Credit (s) 1 This course focuses on knowledge related preoperative management and surgical therapies to be employed by candidate during caring of acutely or critically ill patients having complex or life threatening surgical problems. Seminars in Critical Care Nursing Number Credit (s) 2 The course provides the candidate with the essential knowledge regarding the critical care nursing practice and explores what it means to be a critically ill person. Examines concepts, comprehensive assessment, technology as practice, and clinical ethical decision making. An observational experience in a critical care unit provides insight into the patient s experience of illness, the role of critical care nurse, and the context of critical care nursing practice. Psychosocial Aspects In Critical Care Number Credit (s) 2

12 This course is directed toward specific measures that candidates use to support patients through the stress of crisis and adaptation to illness, heath and death. An understanding and appreciation of the intricate relationship among mind, body, spirit and the healing process will help the candidates provide emotional support to the patient. Health Education Number Credit (s) 2 This course introduces the candidates to the concepts, theories and new trends of health education. This will enable the candidate to gain broader knowledge, practical skills and experience in providing health education to patients and their families.

13 MASTER IN CLINICAL NURSING NURSING: CLINICAL RESEARCH PROJECT th 4 Semester: Research Project (4 credits) Research Project Number Credit(s) 4 1 st,2 nd and 3 rd semesters courses Under the guidance of the adviser, the student takes four credit hours for research project and submits it to the adviser. A clinical research project will be under the supervision of a graduate faculty member that employs the scientific process in analyzing a clinical problem or issue relative to advanced nursing practice. Emphasis is on a project that has tangible application to the practice setting. Prior approval of the research topic by the faculty of record must be obtained prior to registration for the course
