1 Fremont Unified School District & Mission Valley Regional Occupational Program PRE- PUBLICATION DESIGN REVIEW OF STUDENT CREATED WEBSITES These guidelines were developed as a key reference tool for Fremont Unified School District (FUSD) & Mission Valley Regional Occupational Program (MVROP) and how they define the roles, awareness and responsibilities of participants in the student web design technology course, and the creation of projects related to course instruction with the intent to publish these students projects on the World Wide Web. Students may also design educational and informative introduction pages for school administrators, teachers, aides, assistants staff, and Fremont Rotary sponsored Students of the Month Award Winners, as well as listings of the anticipated colleges & universities that students have applied to, and have received admittance letters from. Educational resources for staff, students and the, in addition to the Web Design Course student s completed web design projects, some of which may be community- service based projects which fulfill curricular goals of the course, as well as graduation service- learning requirements. These projects, based upon completion of a successful proposal review, offer a real- world practicum in the establishment of The course s Community Client Project. ( See appendix A ) Compliance 1. Students & Their Parents/Guardians acknowledge that use of electronic media provided by the FUSD district & MVROP is a privilege. Misuse of equipment or electronic files may subject the student to loss of privilege, an adverse impact on grades, and disciplinary action. (AR , BP/AR ) Signed Network Use Agreement forms, must be on file for a students to use the facilities. 2. All publications must comply with all state, federal, and international laws concerning: copyright, intellectual property rights, and legal uses of network computers. Students are not download, copy or share any material, ideas, text, music, games, movies, photos, software or other intellectual property without the express written permission of the original creator, In a written artwork release form. (An is not a viable verification of said release of property. Students wishing to use copyrighted materials, must provide the instructor, releases and other documentation which undeniably verifies the consent to use other s intellectual and copyrighted property Prior To Its Us. Students Must be able to provide consent documentation of release of property from the original artist to the instructor (with reasonable time to verify the release of property from the original artist) prior to the close of assignment deadlines. This time period Must Not Be less than 1 month prior to the intended due date and or publication of the website. All use of others intellectual / copyrighted materials, Must be properly cited within the website as well. 3. Students will receive instruction regarding the safe, ethical, legal, and responsible use of the Internet and of the District's Internet system and their rights and responsibilities under this policy. Compliance Cont. 4. Students will receive instruction regarding Sexual Harassment in the Workplace and School; how to recognize it, report it, and prevention measures, as well as FUSD s Anti- Bullying: Zero- Tolerance Policy, and be expected to uphold these policies and workplace ethics in the creation of their work, both in the classroom, as well as within the presented materials in their website designs. 5. All publications must comply with Fremont Unified School District s & Mission Valley Regional Occupational Program s Computer Network Use Agreements, MVROP Board policies and directives, Internet Use agreement(s), Website guidelines and The FUSD Parent/Guardian Student Handbook & Notice of Rights and Responsibilities found at: ook.pdf as well as the, Internet Safe and Responsible Use Policy & Website Concerns found in The Fremont Unified School Board Policy, BP which can be found at: 6. Communication with respect to the content of any page must be directed to : M.V.R.O.P. s Director of Instructional Services, or designee thereof, The FUSD Chief Technology Officer, M.V.R.O.P. s IT Manager, American High School s Principle, and to the teacher directly. Instructor. 7. Any website with an https prefix must have a security certificate associated with it. This allows for secured point- to- point communications. All of the websites to which the Technology Department transmits District information for purposes of regulatory compliance go to https secured websites. 8. Commercial use for the pursuit of personal financial gain is prohibited. Web sites may not contain advertisements. Web sites should not be used as a forum to advance personal beliefs or causes. These include links and references to commercial, political, social, religious and philosophical organizations not relevant to or outside the scope of curriculum or specific instructional material. Links to the personal home pages or sites of faculty or students is not permitted.

Additionally, all students who wish to participate in the course, must sign and return, along with a parent(s) or guardian(s) signature(s) a copy of this document, acknowledging: A discussion and review of these policies and documents with their instructor and relayed by students to their parent(s) / guardian(s), with an ultimate understanding that the classroom is a learning environment and through planning, designing, and implementing publications through website design lessons, students will learn to discuss, inquire, question and gain insight into the professional and proper application of these policies in their future schoolwork and workplace publications, vowing to employ knowledge of the above laws, agreements, guidelines, and netiquette considerations in their artistic, academic and web design projects on a daily basis. Parent s / Guardian s furthermore acknowledge that they approve of their student s work being previewed, And If Approved for publication, that the Student s First Name and Last Name, will be attached to the website, listing them as the creator of the website. 10. Users are responsible for the use of their individual accounts and should take all reasonable precautions to prevent others from being able to use their account, including protecting the privacy of their password(s). (Please continue to next page) File Naming, and Storage Locations 11. All completed student web design publications will reside primarily on the Web Design Technology Course server, a part of the FUSD web server, where files will reside and be placed within either or both of two folders: 1) a Staging folder, where websites are pending instructor review, then copied to 2) a Live Folder for publication to the World Wide Web after approval. Adobe Dreamweaver will be used to manage the staging and live publication areas. 12. An exception to Section 8, may be the successful completion and approval of a Community Client Web Design Project Proposal* (See Appendix A).

4 Web Design & Media Course Description Page 4 of 11 Student work may also be able to be submitted to artistic design competitions, should the Instructor, FUSD & MVROP be informed of the student s desire to submit the work, Pending Parental Approval of the artworks submission, and a fully completed prospectus is turned in for review at least 4 weeks prior to the contest deadline. 13. Students will maintain an original website index folder containing all website files: including but not limited to: html files, objects, attributes, images, and draft documents in Microsoft Word format, in addition to course related files and other project files. A backup copy of files is also be maintained by the instructor and the student individually, in the event of accidental erase, file corruption etc The instructor is not responsible for students error in file saving, nor the displacement of files, or for technical failures such as: poor read/ write errors, flash or School Loop DropBox errors, back- up failures etc. Students are encouraged to save their work at a least every 5 minutes and to save after every major complete action. Students may access the assignments School Loop Website s DropBox and locker to save non- directory / non- index files, and component files for use and back- up for this course. 15. Students should follow proper file naming conventions for all files within a lesson project, as incorrectly labeled files will not be search for, if located in another area of the student s computer, or if filenames are inaccurate from those instructed. File Naming, and Storage Locations 16. At no time are student s created web design projects to be posted to the World Wide Web on any other server. An exception to this, with prior advanced written request of at least 4 weeks, is the submission of students own website design course work to be used as a portfolio example for skill review by: future art media course instructors, perspective employers, scholarship award committees, or for the sole purpose of review for the entrance admission to a post- secondary institution of learning. File Naming, and Storage Locations Cont. Live Presentation of student Community Project Web Designs once completed on the World Wide Web, and If presented live on the World Wide Web by the Community Member, who was a non- paying, non- binding, acting- client for the benefit of affering students a community service- learning opportunity, must accept websites will remain intact with no alterations to the work whatsoever, and must include a direct link on the sites homepage, back to American High School s Visual & Performing Fine Arts & Career Technology Education Homepage. This is true even if the student s website is currently being presented on the homepage. Student work will not be kept on the FUSD server for a period longer than a school year, and there should not be an expectation on the part of students to be able to access their website file beyond the extent of the annual course. 17. Students, Parents and Guardians, acknowledge that the posting of student- designed websites, is at the sole discretion of the course instructor and the courses involved administrators; pending review by the instructor, and or the school principal, and or FUSD and MVROP staff and personnel. Web sites, which include information regarding administrators, teachers, and staff, and students, as a practice of professionalism will be asked to be reviewed by all parties involved, and only be posted if all parties involved consent. (Use of a website release contract form will be applicable for persons involved in all projects), prior

The submission of projects to the instructor for course objective achievement will be graded, but understand that not all submitted projects which are graded, are guaranteed to appear Live on the World Wide Web. Projects not meeting basic competency requirements will not be considered for publication, and FUSD, MVROP, and the instructor have a right to remove any project for any reason, at any time; without notice. Projects that do not comply will all requirements will not be considered for publication. 18. High school students will not disclose personal contact information except to educational institutions for educational purposes, and to companies, or other entities for career development purposes, or with specific staff approval or with Superintendent approval. 19. Students will not disclose names, personal contact information, or any other private or personal information about other students under any circumstances. Students may include their First and Last names in the work as web designers, should their parents/ Guardians, read, and acknowledge in writing (by signing and dating the Pre- publication acknowledgement at the bottom of the Web Design Course Syllabus which includes this document. 20. Students own the copyright to their creative works, including works created using District resources. The Internet agreement signed by parent/guardians will include a request for permission from parents/guardians to post student work on the Internet. All student work posted on the Internet will contain a copyright notice indicating the ownership of that work by the student. (See Pre- publication Check List, next page)

6 Web Design & Media Course Description Page 6 of 11 Pre - Publication Check List: Student designed websites must adhere to all compliance sections listed in this document above and below, in order to be considered for publication on to World Wide Web via the Fremont Unified School District/ M.V.R.O.P. Server. Meeting these does not automatically mean the work will be published live on the World Wide Web. Final Selection of Students work will be made by the Web Design Technology Course s Instructor, Mr. B.C. and/or, in conjunction with American High School Principal, Mr. Greg Bailey, and/ or, Mission Valley ROP Program Coordinator, Mr. James Briano and/or, Mission Valley ROP Internet Technology Manager Mr. Philip Subasa. All website design content published via the American High School / Mission Valley Regional Occupational Program s Web Design Technology Course Server and network must relate specifically to organizational activities, and comply with the following: All material presented on the student- designed website must present an image that will reflect well on the District(s), their Affiliations, Communities, Schools, Teachers, Staff, and Students. The web site should be attractive, interesting, and its main purpose is that of communication. Therefore, it must be easy to navigate and contain up- to- date information. All posted information must be verifiable, accurate, and appropriate. All Web pages should meet goals of high quality in style, grammar, spelling, design, and presentation. No slang acronyms, text spelling, etc are NOT to be used, unless used in a journalistic reporting fashion, such as in directly quoting a comment made by someone. Publications should be designed for clarity and readability, and easy of access to information. This includes the use of HTML markup attributes to allow for considerations of persons who have accessibilities challenges to be able to navigate your website. The MVROP & FUSD logo, must link directly to their homepage, and American High School s Logo must link directly to the VPFA Web Design Technology homepage. Copyright It is to be understood by all students participating in this course that The Fair Use Copyright shall Not Apply to the works produced in this course, as the District and Instructor are training these individuals to become excellent working professionals, and that Students will strive to create projects which are completely original creations, and all students vow to properly cite ALL Source materials they use which Are Not of Their Own Direct Creation. All websites will respect the rights of copyright owners in use of materials found on, disseminated through, posted to, or re- posted, to the Internet (See Appendix Item B) Pre - Publication Check List Cont. : CREATIVE COMMONS LICENSED MATERIALS may be used on your website, but it is the responsibility of the student to be aware of the creative commons license attribute- copyright type the material is covered under. (Some Allow Commercial Use, Other types Do Not.) Some creative common licensed materials are Attribution- ShareAlike and This means any work created which includes these materials, is automatically through (you consent by using the materials) the use of the material, allowed to be shared and used by others. (See Remember if creating a Community Client Web Design Project, this falls under the category of Commercial work, and requires correctly attributed Creative Commons licensed work for this specific use. ALL CREATIVE COMMONS LICENSED MATERIALS REQUIRE POSTING OF THE CREATIVE COMMONS LOGO, NEXT TO THE MATERIAL USED, AS WELL AS CITATION(S) MADE TO THE THE ORIGINAL CREATOR(S). 2 PUBLIC DOMAIN MATERIALS may also be used with proper citations made. Web Design & Media Course Description Page 9 of 11 Web pages shall not contain the personal address or phone number of students, nor other personal information about yourself or any other student in a manner that violates the Districts level of student safety. (See appendix C) & Section 18 exceptions above) No student s addresses may be listed on any Web page. Keep in mind the options settings of your client software, that may state your name in the sender receipt, or from areas, and communications dialogues. Only staff member s school addresses, who are acting as an advisor to a school organization may use addresses in a school website. 21. Web pages shall not display personally identifiable student pictures unless explicit parental permission has been granted by a parent s signature on the Technology Agreement form, or the Web Design Course Syllabus, and includes a proper Adult or Minor Model Release form signed by Parents/ Guardians, and these forms are on record with the instructor as of the final assignment deadline. It is required prior to publishing any identifying pictures of students. Names of students in pictures will not be given listed, or provided, without signed parental/ guardian release. FULLY completed, and appropriately signed signatures upon Release(s) for Artwork, Media and images, are due on or before the assignment s due date. Although technically, only the Minor Model Release (under the age of 18 year old), form requires a Parent/ Guardian s signature, ALL RELEASE FORMS, FOR THE CONTEXT OF THE WEB DESIGN TECHNOLOGY COURSE WILL REQUIRE FULL DISCLOSURE OF ARTWORK RELEASES, INCLUDING The PARENT(s) / Guardian(s) with applicable SIGNATURES UPON THE RELEASE CONTRACTS. Web pages should be designed to ensure rapid loading time and be tested in various browsers. Web pages should not contain large downloadable files- i.e. video clips, music, etc. as these use an excessive amount of bandwidth. Users will not download large files unless absolutely necessary. Website designs should limit student exposure to commercial advertising and product promotion, especially advertising or promotion of youth- oriented products and services, UNLESS PART OF AN EDUCATIONAL CRITIQUE OF THEM. ALL WEBSITE PAGES WILL NOT BE ARCHIVED BEYOND A YEAR BY THE INSTRUCTOR. Appendix A: Community Clients Students may through consultation with the Instructor, Mr. B.C. and Principal Mr. Greg Bailey, providing the projects meet all stated requirements within this document, may obtain, Community Clients that serve to give students a practicum in a world situation; where student work: has a direct relevant transfer of learning, to demonstrate achievement in the skills obtained from the course,

10 Web Design & Media Course Description Page 10 of 11 where, the student via the instructor s directly negotiates and communicates with the client to gain an understanding of all work requested to be produced by the student(s) in the effort to fulfill multiple learning objectives, in an adaptive deadline situation and culminating project where, clients and students will communicate, project requirements and objectives, establish a tentative calendar of deadlines and correspondence deadlines in a written proposal for review by the instructor and principal, to determine if the website design project meets all the requirements within this document, and is to be completed with no monetary or other form of compensation expected or implied, within a flexible expected due date, (a no stress timeline), and the overall hope being that the project meets or exceeds the client s desired outcomes. Clients & Students also understand, that the project may be critiqued in a group presentation, and that a written signed (non- binding, contract; just practicum), is to be negotiated prior to the beginning of discussion of the website design proposal phase, that there will be not any ramifications, lawsuits, or liability, loss, compensation, return of provided materials, or further expectations should given, if for whatever reason the student(s) is/ are unable to complete the project. Students will be required to log all hours spent in the process of discussing, designing, completing, meeting, and finessing the clients project, in order to produce an actual (not binding; just practicum) billing statement. Clients may be verifiable community members or fictitious clients for the purpose of a given lesson and learning objective(s), dependent upon the student, Principal Bailey, The Students Parent / Guardian and the Instructor s consent.
