Philosophy and Objectives of the Program 4.1 To equip the graduates who are pursuing their studies at the Doctor of Philosophy Program in Business Administration with the necessary knowledge, skills and capabilities while ensuring that their academic achievement and professional standards are competitive with their counterparts who have graduated from foreign-based leading educational institutes. 4.2 To groom the human resources who possess the necessary knowledge, skills and research capability, who are capable of continually developing and widening their knowledge bases of business administration, which has a key role towards the development of the national economy and who are able to constantly search for modern knowledge and make the most use of such knowledge for resolving any problems facing at their workplaces and organizations, irrespective of domestic or overseas, while being the leading force steering the country s domestic socio-economy towards a path of prosperity and advancement on a sustainable basis 4.3 To train the human resources who possess the necessary knowledge and high skills in terms of academic capability and applications, to ensure that they would emerge the leaders in their respective professions by training, which well complies to the government s graduate-level education policies, the National Economic and Social Development, as well as Thammasat University s philosophy of academic excellence with virtues and morality being as the guiding lights. 5. 2 6. Admission Requirements 1. Student must hold a Master s degree from either domestic or foreign educational institutes, with the status of academic capabilities and degree being certified and recognized by Thammasat University Council. 2. Pass English Examination with a TOEFL score of no less than 600 for paper-based exam or no less than 250 for computer-based exam or pass English Examination with a IELTS score of no less than 6.5 or pass English Examination with a TU-GET score of no less than 600, whereby the validity of test scores should not be of more than 2 years from the date of taking English Examination to until the date of submitting their application form for Doctor of Philosophy Program to the University. 3. Receive a cumulative GMAT score of no less than 550 or a cumulative GRE score of no less than 1100 for Verbal and Quantitative exam, whereby the validity of such test scores should not be of more than 5 years from the date of taking English Examination to until the date of submitting their application form for Doctor of Philosophy Program to the University. 4. Having the necessity qualifications in line with clause 8 of Thammasat University s B.E.2541 regulation governing the graduate-level education and the amended versions of B.E.2545 (the second edition) and B.E.2550 (the third edition). 7. Selection Method The dean shall appoint the selection committee tasked with selecting the candidates by judging from the following criteria: 7.1 The candidate s qualification according to rule No The presentation by the candidates of their Intensive Dissertation Proposal/Pre-elementary Dissertation as specified in the enrolment notification 7.3 The likelihood of the candidates to complete their studies in the level of Doctor of Philosophy Program in Business Administration 7.4 The likelihood of candidate to be able to apply and adapt whatever knowledge and skills-to-be-acquired from the course for use in the real working environment for the benefaction of the society as a whole. 7.5 The preparedness of the lecturer who agree to act as advisor to such candidate when it comes to working on the dissertation. 7.6 In case of passing the selection by conditions, the students are required to take the additional courses for basic supplementary subjects on top of the regular courses required in the graduate-level curriculum in line with the agreement when the candidates are admitted with a Pass Grade-condition. Students have to pay the extra tuition fee by themselves for taking such extra courses. 8. Academic System 8.1 The course for Doctor of Philosophy Program in Business Administration (International Program) is basically conducted during the daytime under the dual semester-system. English is used in the instruction and dissertation writing
3 8.2 Study Plan: The curriculum is the second plan that prioritize the research-based studies to ensure students are highly equipped with the necessary capabilities and the required skills to conduct high quality dissertations and the qualities that are conducive to further advancements of their academic careers in the future. Throughout the curriculum, students are required to register a total of 60 credits, 48 of which are from for dissertation credits with the rests of 12 credits earning from taking extra courses of supplementary subjects. 8.3 Studies of Basic Supplementary Subjects The Board in charge of planning curriculum for Doctor of Philosophy Program in Business Administration (International Program) may set as the prerequisites that the candidates might pass the selection criteria by conditioning that they have to take some extra subjects other than the ones prescribed in the regular curricular required for the course of Doctor of Philosophy Program in Business Administration (International Program). Such extra courses are primarily meant to consolidate the basic knowledge foundations for students, whereas students are required to earn a Pass (P) Grade from taking such extra courses. However, the earned credits from extra courses would not be included in the total credits in this curriculum. Besides, students have to pay the extra tuitions fees by themselves for taking such extra consolidating foundation courses. 8.4 Studies of each subject Students are required to take 4 compulsory subjects, earning a total of 12 credits, as followings: - BA 801 Research Methodology 1 - BA 802 Research Methodology 2 - BA 811 Research and Theory 1 - BA 812 Research and Theory Dissertation Students are required to take the dissertation course for earning a total of 48 credits as following: BA 900 Dissertation 48 credits 8.6 Tests of Qualification (1) Students are entitled to take the tests of the qualification when have studied and pass an examination in the following subjects: BA 801, BA. 802, BA. 811, BA. 812 and have earned the accumulative GPA of not lower than (2) Students have to submit their application form to the faculty, stating their intention to take the qualification examination in writing and verbal tests. (3) Students must pass the qualification examination with a Pass (P)-Grade by within 3 times of their tests and they must pass it by the second academic year, otherwise they would be retired from the student registration and results of every examination undertaken would be recorded in the registration office. 8.7 Dissertation (1) Students will be able to register their dissertation after they have completed the course requirements by learning and passing all 4 compulsory subjects with a total of 12 credits, earning an accumulative GPA of not lower than 3.00 and earn a Pass (P)-Grade for qualification examination. (2) The faculty shall appoint the advisory lecturers in charge of providing the PH.D graduates with the necessary recommendation and advice concerning the dissertation writings. The main advisors and the joint advisors
4 (if any) students must become as a permanent lecturer who holds a PH.D degree or comparable or holds an academic position of not lower than that of the associate professor in their respective fields of studies or related fields of studies and must have the research experiences that are not a part of their previous graduations (Outsider experts could be invited to serve as the joint advisor). (3) When student has completed the dissertation structure tentatively and the advisors have approved it already, the faculty would then form a committee in charge of examining such dissertation. The examination committee shall comprise of at least 5 members including the advisors, the permanent lecturers at Thammasat University, and outsider experts who hold a PH.D degree or comparable in their respective fields of studies or related fields and must have the research experience that is not part of their previous graduations. The said committee shall be responsible for evaluation and judge the results of the examination. (4) The examination to the dissertation structure could be implemented by presenting the topic of the dissertation that covers the knowledge, theory and research methodology that concerns with the topics of the dissertation at the meeting and by interview. In this regards, the faculty would allow students to take the tests on dissertation structure twice a year. Students could be able to submit to the faculty their examination applications from the first semester of the second academic year and they must pass their examination by within 2 times by the first semester of their third academic year or otherwise they would be retired from the student registration. (5) Dissertation Examination - Students are entitled to undergo the dissertation examination when they have complete the course requirements by studying and earn a total of 12 credits for compulsory subjects and a total of 48 credits for registration of their dissertation course in compliance with the curriculum requirements. Students also earns Pass (P)- Grades for examination of qualification, of dissertation structures as well as of foreign language proficiency and the advisors are of a view that students are ready to present their dissertations (Students who passed the enrolment selection by condition are required to take the supplementary foundation consolidating subjects and earn a Pass (P)-Grade prior to submission of their requests to undergo the dissertation examination). - In submitting their requests to undergo the dissertation examinations, students are required to do so by at least 60 days well ahead of the end of each academic year. Besides, students must earn a Pass (P)-Grade in their examinations of dissertation structures and foreign language proficiency well ahead of submitting their applications to undergo the dissertation examinations. In addition, students must forward to the examination committee more than one copies of such dissertation structures at least 30 days in advance well ahead of the date of the dissertation examination - The examination to the dissertations would be done by means of presentation at the meeting and interviews by the examiner committee who are the same team with the one who participated in the dissertation structure examination. The appointment of new or a replacement of the examining committee could be done only when in case of needs be. In this regards, the dissertation examination also means the examination about the students general knowledge in fields relating to their topics of researches as well - On dissertation examination, all 5 member-examiner committee should be present if such examination is to be deemed as valid. In case of examiner s absence, the examination date should be further put off. If needs be, students might be allowed to change some of examiner committee or even appoint more examiners to the
5 examination committee. In this regards, the main advisors and the joint advisors can be named as chairman of the dissertation examination committee - The proceeding of structuring and examining the dissertation shall go in line with Thammasat University s B.E.2541 regulation governing the graduate-level education and the amended versions of B.E.2545 (the second edition) and B.E.2550 (the third edition). (6) On examination of foreign language proficiency, students are required to earn a Pass (P)-Grade well ahead of submitting their requests to undergo the dissertation examination. The examination committee shall make up of at least 3 qualified experts, with the language experts supervising in the proceeding and oversee the examinination process to ensure they results of the examination meet the required standards. (7) Retirement (1) Issues regarding to the status of being the students and their retirement shall go in line with Thammasat University s B.E.2541 regulation governing the graduate-level education and the amended versions of B.E.2545 (the second edition) and B.E.2550 (the third edition). (2) Students in the Doctor of Philosophy in Business Administration Program shall in effect be retired when they have failed the dissertation structure examinations for 2 times. (3) Students failed in the qualification examination for 3 times. 9. Period of Study The required period of the study should consume no more than 10 regular semesters. 10. Registration In each regular semester, students must register no less than 6 credits and not more than 12 credits per semester, while other details go in line with Thammasat University s B.E.2541 regulation governing the graduate-level education and the amended versions of B.E.2545 (the second edition) and B.E.2550 (the third edition). 11. Evaluation and Graduation Requirements 11.1 Evaluation Education evaluation could be classified into 9 grades, with specific name and value of each credit being mentioned as followings: Grade A A- B+ B B- C+ C D F Credit value Concerning the rule for counting of the earned credits, only the credits from subjects in the curriculum that the students earn a Satisfaction (S)-Grade or not lower than that of B-Grade would be included in the total earned credits while each subject that students earn credits of lower than that of B-Grade should be calculated for finding out a GPA in that semester and for the accumulative median range anytime.
6 Evaluation of the supplementary foundation consolidating subjects, evaluation of personal qualifications, evaluations of the foreign language examinations shall be divided into just 2 grades a Pass (P)-Grade and a Not Pass (N)-Grade, with no further grades Evaluation to the dissertation could be divided into 2 grades: a Satisfactory (S) Grade and an Unsatisfactory (U) Grade, whereas dissertation passing the S Grade have to be endorsed unanimously by the dissertation testing committee Other conditions concerning the education evaluation shall go in line with Thammasat University s B.E.2541 regulation governing the graduate-level education 11.2 Graduation Requirements Students must complete the course requirement in accordance with the curriculum structure and completely fulfill some other conditions as set by the Faculty and the Curriculum Earn an accumulative GPA of not less than For students passing the selection by condition, they are required to take the extra supplementary subjects and earn a Pass (P) Grade Earn a Pass (P) Grade in examination of aptitude and qualification Earn a Pass (P) Grade in examination of foreign language Earn a Satisfaction (S) Grade in tests of defending their dissertation Having the findings of their dissertation published or having attempted enough to to finding ways to have a whole or a part of their dissertations published in the academic journals or printings with outsider board members having been invited to join in the Peer Review Committee ahead of publications and such academic works have also been widely recognized in their respective disciplines Other conditions go in line with Thammasat University s B.E.2541 regulation governing the graduate-level education and the amended versions of B.E.2545 (the second edition) and B.E.2550 (the third edition). 12. (Lecture 3 hrs per week) BA802 Research Methodology 2 3 (3-0-9) Studies on issues of higher research methodology that are of much conducive to the development by students of their dissertation structures. (Lecture 3 hrs per week) BA811 Research and Theory 1 3 (3-0-9) Studies on topics relating to various education philosophies and means and ways of building up their horizons of knowledge from various research works. The scope of studies covers the main paradigms that influence various research theories as well as coming up with new business administration theories while giving importance towards the ethics when engaging with the researches and the topics of dissertations in which students are interested as well. Education Quality Assurance by the Curriculum Guidelines for conducting the education quality assurance by the curriculum of Doctor of Philosophy Program in Business Administration
12 18.1 Management of the Curriculum The faculty would proactively support and encourage the advisory lecturers and the graduates in this program alike to conduct researches. To meet that end, the initial student enrolment criteria would give much weights to selecting the right advisory lecturers so that to ensure students would be able to access to the quality mentoring and advices from such lecturers and could have the lecturers who possess strong academic capabilities enough to supervise and guide when it comes to conducting the dissertations. Besides, the faculty would promote the academic works by students and lecturers by sponsoring their overseas trips for presenting their academic works and by sponsoring students in relation to the developments of their dissertation topics to be pursued in their researches Supporting resources in the learning-teaching processes The program provides all students with personal zones in addition to the necessary research-related equipments including computer, business textbooks and journals, academic-related databases that are all available at the office of the program Supports by providing mentoring and guidance for students The program has a budget for uses in organizing the academic seminars and special lectures by domestic and foreign lecturers periodically in order to enhance the research skills for students Demand in the labor market, society and/or employers satisfactions for such graduates The program would conduct a research into the employers satisfactions for its graduates and find out if its graduates are able to pursue their careers and professions in line with the fields of their professional trainings or not. Findings of the research would be used by the program to further improve its curriculum in order to ensure the program could be able to groom the right graduates who are in needs of in the real workplaces, with academic achievements being on top priority of the program. 19. Development of Curriculum 19.1 Indicators of the required standards and quality of educations for this curriculum are as followings: - The numbers of students engaging in academic careers following their graduations - The number of students academic works that have been published in academic journals at domestic and international level. - Students complete their studies by the required period of time (no more than 5 years) 19.2 Therefore, it is imperative for Thammasat University to evaluate its curriculum basing on abovementioned indicators once in every five years. - The first evaluation schedule is set for Other conditions Details other than the ones stipulated in this curriculum should comply with Thammasat University s B.E.2541 regulation governing the graduate-level education and the amended versions of B.E.2545 (the second edition) and B.E.2550 (the third edition), as well as the rule and various announcement as issued by the Faculty of Commerce and Accountancy and/or by Thammasat University.
