As small and medium-sized businesses look to reduce costs, increase efficiencies, enhance productivity and ensure the availability of their data, they have found Linux and Open Source Software to be a viable, cost-effective platform that meets their corporate needs. As such, Linux has begun to move from the edge of the network to become a vital component of the data center platform strategy. The integration of Linux into the heart of the enterprise, regardless of size, has created a market requirement for storage management and data protection solutions based on Linux. As data migration, storage management, and disaster recovery strategies shift to include Linux, BakBone Software provides award-winning native Linux data protection solutions that address these needs while reducing complexity and enhancing return on investment (ROI). BakBone was an early adopter of Linux, using it as a base development platform for its NetVault data protection and recovery solution in Today BakBone s NetVault: Backup is the recognized leader for data protection based on Linux, with a leading worldwide market share per IDC and industry awards such as Datamation s 2007 Enterprise Linux Product of the Year Award. Through its StoreVault line of storage appliances, Network Appliance has integrated enterprise-proven storage technologies into an affordable solution for small and medium businesss (SMBs) with a simplified management interface that allows firms to focus on growing their business instead of their growing storage. StoreVault has been recognized as an enterprise-class storage solution for SMBs through industry awards such as VAR Business s 2006 Best MidMarket Product and Small Business Computing s 2006 Excelence in Technology Award. 3 Integrating StoreVault and NetVault: Backup Linux in the Data Center The growing acceptance of Linux has forced many organizations to view Linux as less of a tactical solution and more of an integrated part of an organization s overall IT strategy. Linux is the fastest growing operating environment in the world. IDC projects that in 2007, more than one out of three servers (33%) will be Linux systems based on unit sales. IDC further projects that Linux adoption will continue to penetrate the database tier within mission-critical IT environments, becoming a critical component to a company s data protection strategies. Oracle, for example, projects that more than 50% of its customers will be using Linux by The company s October 2006 announcement of Unbreakable Linux was a signal to speed adoption by giving its customers the same enterprise-level Linux support as its core products. Figure 1 Linux users by 2010 Why Customers Are Choosing Linux The low cost of entry and low total cost of ownership (TCO) are driving Linux adoption in a growing number of enterprise and mid-sized environments. As organizations look to update aging infrastructures that have been postponed due to financial constraints over the last several years, Linux is proving itself to be a more cost effective choice than the proprietary alternatives. Migrating from a RISC-based architecture to Linux on an x86 system presents a one time hardware arbitrage with a potential windfall in savings for large and medium-sized IT shops. Linux prevents vendor lock-in that was prevalent during the RISC and UNIX wars, and allows end users to exploit the arrival of powerful, inexpensive commodity hardware. Price is certainly not the only driver. Stability, security, and the open source nature of the solution also come into consideration. It is for these reasons that Linux, in its various distributions, is finding its way into a variety of business, education and government environments. Linux Delivers Stability for Data Storage Environments One of the driving benefits of the Linux operating system is its proven stability. For data protection, system availability is vital. After all, if the backup server fails, the company s critical data is left at risk. With Windows, the server can be compromised at the operating-system level due to patching, system crashes, OS repair, or any number of reasons that require Windows to be re-booted. As Linux continues to penetrate the data tier, native Linux data protection solutions allow companies to reliably shift their high-value data assets to the stable, cost-effective platform while assuring a coherent data recovery strategy. By adhering to open systems standards, Linux enables plug-and-play compatibility for enterprise-class data storage and protection solutions such as StoreVault and NetVault: Backup. - -

The resulting complementary technologies enable customers to streamline their distributed backup operations with an integrated solution that shares a key value proposition products that are powerful yet easy to deploy. BakBone and StoreVault are working closely to broaden the reach of affordable disk-based data protection solutions for SMBs. BakBone is the first company to provide an integrated management application for StoreVault that is capable of managing the entire disk-to-disk-to-tape backup and restore process. Additionally, the BakBone NetVault data recovery software integrates with Network Appliance Snapshots, enabling customers to consolidate their backup infrastructures for greater management ease and flexibility, providing them with a more robust data protection solution

5 Integrating StoreVault and NetVault: Backup Why BakBone for Linux Environments For nearly a decade BakBone has demonstrated its commitment to the Linux platform The company s flagship NetVault: Backup data protection solution was specifically architected for Linux in Today, BakBone Software has the broadest Linux support in the storage management market, supporting more leading distributions than any backup software vendor. In addition, BakBone has certified the kernels and distributed versions of 18 Linux variants, including Red Hat and SuSE. With broad Linux experience, the BakBone advantage goes well beyond the technology as customers are able to leverage the company s platform expertise and knowledge base for the most effective Linux data protection deployments. As Linux continues to strengthen and broaden its position in the enterprise data center, it is critical that there are comprehensive data protection solutions based on Linux to support this evolution, says Dave Dargo, senior strategist, Olliance Group. It s exciting to see the innovative, true Linux solutions that the BakBone experts are providing. While other companies simply port their Windows or UNIX applications to Linux, BakBone s Linux data protection solutions are built from the ground up for the platform. By architecting the solution specifically for the platform, BakBone is able to provide the most advanced native solutions, delivering: Certification for over 50 different Linux distributions and versions on all platform architectures Fast deployment within minutes The most extensive application support Disaster recovery for Linux (including OS, application, user settings, partition information and data recovery) Support for dissimilar hardware restores Heterogeneous backup support includes Microsoft Windows, Macintosh, Netware and UNIX platforms Advanced user interface providing a common look and feel across all platforms BakBone s single interface, as illustrated in Figure 2 allows you to manage online, offline and nearline Snapshot copies, disk-to-disk replication and tape archiving for disaster recovery. This ability to centrally manage from within a single interface simplifies backup management and provides greater efficiencies in complex environments. 6 Why StoreVault for Linux Environments Running the highly efficient Data ONTAP StoreVault Edition operating system, StoreVault systems consolidate Linux data in a central location and simultaneously support SAN (both iscsi and Fibre Channel) as well as NAS storage infrastructures. In addition to Linux, StoreVault offers true heterogeneous platform support, including MacOS, UNIX and Windows. StoreVault storage systems are easy to install, configure, and manage and are able to take up to 225 Snapshots per volume to protect data. Each incremental snapshot stores only incremental changes at the block level. This saves disk space, provides organizations with very granular Snapshot intervals for better version control, and provides the ability to do fewer full Snapshots while protecting data over longer time periods. Through tight integration with NetVault: Backup, StoreVault can create multiple disk-based copies of data for online protection, can provide a disk-based target for nearline network backups, and can incorporate tape backup systems for offline storage, offering complete data protection solutions. The advent of cheaper disk technologies, such as Serial ATA (SATA), has enabled many companies to entertain the use of disk as a backup medium instead of, or in addition to, tape. BakBone s NetVault: Backup is capable of taking full advantage of disk as a backup medium. A key competitive advantage of BakBone s software is the ability to recognize the differences between writing to disk (many read/write heads) and tape (single read/write head). To maximize efficiency, backup software must recognize the storage type and then send the data to the device to match its capabilities. StoreVault systems offer multiple ways to increase value and efficiency for customers. They can be used as a file server using the NFS and CIFS protocols, an easy to use and configure primary storage device, to store the data off the local servers and serve the data up from the network. This is a tried and true use that Network Appliance has been doing for many years for thousands of customers. A second benefit of the StoreVault is to use some of the storage as a secondary disk storage device, as the place to store backups as opposed to tape. Using disk for backups means faster backups and more importantly, faster restores. With BakBone, customers can set up their first backup to StoreVault as a D2D device with a policy to create a second copy to tape for long-term storage or offsite vaulting for disaster recovery. The advantage of this is being able to maintain a shortterm backup copy on disk, for 30 days, for example, to ensure the fastest recovery. BakBone manages the movement and storage of the backups, erasing old copies as they expire after a designated number of days when there is a second copy already in existence on tape. Finally, when using the StoreVault as a file server for primary data, BakBone can backup the data on the StoreVault to a tape drive attached to the StoreVault, to a tape drive attached to the BakBone NetVault: Backup server, or to any disk device that BakBone has access to on the network. These flexible options, coupled with automated polices to create an infinite number of backup copies on a scheduled basis, enable users to take full control of their data protection. Native Linux Data Protection Regardless of whether you are protecting data in a Linux-only environment or a heterogeneous mix of multiple operating systems, very often the best platform to base your data protection on is Linux. Linux-based data protection provides a higher level of assurance that critical business information will consistently be available to the people who need it most, at a cost that is substantially lower than it would be for options not based on Linux. When deploying a Linux data protection solution, it is important to use a solution that is built from the ground up specifically for Linux. Many backup offerings that claim to support Linux or be based on Linux are really built for other platforms and merely ported over to Linux. In the 1990s, as organizations moved away from Netware to Windows NT, IT professionals quickly realized that their existing backup products were not suited for the new environment. Even as backup vendors tried to port their existing technologies to the new platform, it was clear that legacy data protection solutions were not adequate. The new platform required a new solution, one tailored to the technology advances the new OS offered. Such is the case with Linux enterprise data - 6 -

7 Integrating StoreVault and NetVault: Backup protection. Linux is a unique environment that requires a native data protection solution built from the ground up for Linux to leverage the nuances of the platform. Beyond cost, one of the biggest advantages to Linux is stability. Linux enables companies to cost-effectively decentralize and distribute database-driven business applications to thousands of locations across the enterprise using application servers and databases based on Linux. The platform s reliability is also a driving factor to enterprises moving data protection strategies to the Linux platform. Linux provides a stability that others, including the more prevalent Windows platform, simply cannot. Native Linux data protection solutions such as BakBone s NetVault: Backup, coupled with broad Linux application protection such as BakBone s MySQL application plugin modules, deliver a significant return on investment through vastly improved performance, availability and functionality for environments specific to and inclusive of Linux. Likewise, storage management solutions, such as StoreVault, that offer plug-and-play compatibility with Linux and other open system platforms provide the flexibility required in today s real world environments. Establishing Data Recovery Objectives Deploying a multi-platform data protection solution can be a challenge especially in today s cost-conscious environment. As the enterprise grows and evolves, budget-minded administrators are constantly on the lookout for more efficient ways to address corporate data protection needs. What should be guiding their search is the company s overall business data availability objectives.the best place to start any data protection initiative is to define what it is you are trying to accomplish and what is really Figure 3 Top two challenges relating to storage management by company size (U.S. only) What are the top two challenges facing your company pertaining to storage management? Improving data availability and recovery Managing more storage without increasing management staff Improving storage resource utilization Centralizing management of storage and SAN devices Dealing with too many incompatible management tools Tracking ongoing costs or TCO Small business (n=134) Medium-sized business (n=60) Very large business (n=31) Don t know (% of respondents) Base = respondents involved in the acquisition of any type of storage solution Source: IDC/Infoworld 2005 Trends in Storage Survey - 7 -

8 most important to the business objectives of your organization. For some businesses, the data storage and management goals and objectives may be driven by federal or industry regulations such as Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), or the Gramm Leach Bliley Act (GLBA). For others, it may be based on internally defined objectives, or by an organization s extended supply chain requirements. However, regardless of an organization s size, data protection and availability remain the number one concern. The 2005 IDC/ Infoworld Trends in Storage Survey ranked improving data availability and recovery as the top challenge facing IT and storage managers today, regardless of an organization s size (Figure 3). In fact, improving data availability and recovery is of even higher priority for small-and-medium businesses. When it comes to restoring the data, administrators need to determine the acceptable recovery points and recovery times for every type of data within the organization. Recovery Point Objectives (RPO) refers to the point in time to which you want to be able to recover to. The RPO can be an hour ago, a day ago, a week ago or more. The closer you need to get to real time data capture, the higher your storage requirements- and therefore costs - will be. The Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) is the timeframe in which to recover the targeted data and resume normal operations. The RTO can be set in terms of minutes, hours or days. Here again, the more immediate your data restore needs to be, the higher the cost. The cost is driven by disk space requirements. The company s RPO and RTO targets are defined according to the organizations business and budgetary concerns. Once set, they will also guide the data protection architecture to be deployed. 9 Integrating StoreVault and NetVault: Backup Tiered Linux Data Protection in a StoreVault Environment Two basic forces shape an organization s data protection strategy: data recovery requirements for business continuity and the cost-effectiveness of data storage. IT managers must balance the company s fiscal objectives with the business need for rapid data recovery. To effectively address these seemingly conflicting drivers, a comprehensive data protection strategy will need to incorporate multiple backup types, including online, nearline and offline data storage. Online Data Protection For high-availability, transactional data that requires immediate recovery, Snapshot backups are the quickest way to capture and recover data. Snapshot backups are saved to the local StoreVault filer where they can be recalled in as few as couple of seconds to provide instantaneous recovery. This online backup ensures the least amount of downtime as possible. Typically, the set up is for Snapshots to be taken on an hourly basis. For example up to four Snapshot copies can be created each day and would be maintained along with a daily Snapshot copy and a weekly Snapshot copy to provide several recovery point targets. Snapshot technology allows administrators to browse the data and restore directly from the local disk at the file or directory level, providing a faster recovery solution than tape. BakBone s NetVault Snapshot Manager can centralize StoreVault Snapshot management in the data center and remote offices (Figure 5). Snapshot Manager is an additional BakBone plugin that is fully integrated with StoreVault s Snapshot technology. 10 Online backup by itself may not be sufficient to fully address an organization s data protection needs. Disaster recovery efforts will require a more robust data set to be effective as well. Although fast and efficient, Snapshot copies are not application-aware, and may not offer an appropriate level of backup history. NetVault: Backup augments StoreVault Snapshots with Application Plugin Modules (APMs) to ensure the continuous availability and recoverability of many of today s business-critical applications, such as MySQL, Oracle, Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft SQL Server. Figure 6 illustrates an application-aware backup, utilizing StoreVault and NetVault: Backup APMs. In this example, the application data physically resides on the S500. For an online backup, the data first passes through the application server, and the NetVault: Backup APM processes the transactional and application-specific data for backup. BakBone s Dynamically Shared Device (DSD) feature allows the application data to flow directly to the SAN-attached tape library or VTL without having to go through the backup server. Control data only passes to the backup server, making the application-aware backup more efficient. Although performance might not match that of a Snapshotbased backup, the advantage of this approach is the ability to perform granular backups and restores at the mailbox or transaction level. Both a Snapshot-based and an application-based online backup and recovery scenario are easy to implement using StoreVault and NetVault: Backup solutions, and should be considered in any data protection strategy. Beyond operational considerations, online backups require a significant amount of disk space and, as a result, will generate higher hardware costs. For these reasons, most organizations will employ both online and nearline backup as part of a comprehensive, data protection infrastructure. 11 Integrating StoreVault and NetVault: Backup Nearline Data Protection Architecture Nearline is essentially disk-to-disk backup and recovery. This architecture still provides a fast recovery, but less so than online Snapshots. Nearline backups are captured less frequently than Snapshots, but usually daily, and provide a recovery point of hours With nearline storage, there is no tape or long-term off-site backup strategy to contend with. As a disk-based solution, nearline enables administrators to browse the data and restore at the file level, further reducing the amount of time required for a data recovery. Recovery is fast, typically featuring a recovery time measured in minutes to hours. An optimum nearline deployment includes a StoreVault filer with an advanced data protection software solution such as the NetVault: Backup Virtual Tape Library (VTL) feature. Virtual tape libraries (VTLs) and Shared Virtual Tape Libraries (SVTLs) offer an efficient media backup paradigm for organizations that use StoreVault hardware. A VTL allows administrators to emulate, or virtualize, a tape resource, such as tape, a tape drive, or a tape library, on disk. When using VTLs, tape can become a strategic component of an organization s data protection strategy, but not the major element of the strategy. IT staff can create multiple, duplicate copies of backup jobs from the VTL to tape, or vice versa. Storing backup data on a VTL also allows data copy jobs to be run offline to minimize impact on the network, application servers, NAS, or workstations. Administrators can also set up specific backup policies such as retention dates and media groups for VTLs. With the addition of SVTL, NetVault: Backup can share a VTL over the SAN with multiple NetVault: Backup clients for a LAN-free VTL solution. VTLs are immune to the mechanical difficulties of tape backup over a network because they are not physical entities. One example of such an issue is shoe shining, a scenario in which the incoming data stream to be written to tape is slower than the write speed of the tape drive. This mismatch in speed causes the tape drive to frequently stop, rewind, and then start again when the next block of data arrives. Shoe shining not only negatively affects the performance of the backup but also causes significant wear and tear on tape media and tape drives, which can lead to premature media and drive failures. Because a VTL uses disk, there is no need to match speeds between the data source and the device. A VTL can capture data in drips or blasts and then copy the data to virtual media slots as a save set. These advantages, among others offered by VTLs, can help administrators streamline the backup process. Whether you emulate the StoreVault as a Virtual Tape Library with NetVault Virtual Tape Library (VTL) or Shared Virtual Tape Library (SVTL) plugins, you will need NetVault clients and APMs to backup filers and open systems from within StoreVault. NetVault: Backup supports NDMP V2, 3 and 4, leveraging the advanced features such as: Direct Access Restore (DAR) and D-DAR, which are both file and directory granular restores with direct access from tape. Without these options the entire backup image must be read from tape which can take hours or days. Multi-Volume Selection, which allows multiple volumes in the same backup. This reduces administrative overhead and streamlines the back-up process in large, complex environments. NDMP Multi-streaming. Exclusive to BakBone technologies, this functionality allows multiple backups to be simultaneously and automatically streamed to tape, shattering previous performance barriers. Large environments support. StoreVault filers can manage up to 6TB data volumes, potentially representing millions of files. For these deployments, the 1 terabyte and 1024 file restrictions require administrators who have deployed other backup vendors to load all backup tapes for a restore, significantly impacting a company s storage management and business continuity plan. Netvault NDMP has been designed to remove these system limitations, providing the most advanced NDMP solution for customers. Tape Device sharing. This functionality allows multiple StoreVault devices as well as heterogeneous OS platforms to share physical or virtual tape devices, optimizing administration time and reducing tape hardware investments

12 Offline Data Protection Architecture Offline is the traditional tape-based data backup and restore. This level of data protection archives data that is infrequently accessed, storing it in high-capacity tape libraries. To comply with government mandates and regulations, companies may be required to archive their data to tape and even to store the tapes off-site. Offline provides the most robust data sets, enabling the most comprehensive disaster recovery option. With offline storage, restore targets can be anywhere from one to three weeks, and you can retain a detailed backup history. Additionally, offline storage has the lowest hardware costs of the three options. BakBone provides advanced offline data protection with its NDMP plugin module. BakBone is employed in the world s largest NDMP and Network Appliance environments, offering an enterprise-proven solution for organizations of all sizes. By working jointly with Network Appliance to advance development around NDMP, and having some of the largest NDMP deployments in the world, BakBone has established itself as a recognized leader in NDMP technology. The NDMP plugin module augments and simplifies near-line and offline data protection by providing a common management interface (see Figure 7). NetVault: Backup allows for the centralized management of data protection across all StoreVault and open systems in heterogeneous environments. The robust NDMP support provided by NetVault: Backup and StoreVault gives organizations flexibility of implementation and ease-of-use. The tape library, for example, can be attached directly to the StoreVault appliance for speed, attached to the backup server for convenience, or attached to the SAN for speed and flexibility, thereby optimizing utilization of an organization s tape library investment. BakBone and Network Appliance support all five NDMP data transport models, to ensure data reliability and configuration flexibility in any environment (see figure 7). 13 Integrating StoreVault and NetVault: Backup A typical BakBone-StoreVault configuration is to directly attach the tape library to the StoreVault filer, utilizing the built-in SCSI port or attaching to a Fibre Channel SAN (see Figure 8). In these scenarios, data flows directly from the StoreVault filer to the tape library, with only meta-data passing to the NetVault: Backup server. This helps minimize network traffic and optimize throughput. The downside of offline storage is that both the backup capture and the data recovery can be time intensive. As a result, of the three options, restores from offline backups will take the longest amount of time, typically hours or days.
