In most cases, such architectures involve varying technologies and retention periods based on the age and value of the data. Snapshots are created as consistent point-in-time copies of application volumes, using existing primary storage array capacity, to provide fast on-line restores of data with a short retention period. In order to support longer periods of retention, speed of restore must be compromised, and storage outside of the array itself must be used, typically disk-to-disk technologies, virtual tape libraries (VTL), and data deduplication. To support disaster recovery and for compliance purposes, tapes are written and shipped off-site for archival. Optimized Backups StorSimple appliances utilize single-instance storage through deduplication and compression to mitigate capacity consumption within the appliance and in the cloud, which helps to lower costs and improve performance. Additionally, backups leverage this single-instance storage. Even though every backup is a full backup, performance is optimized through use of the singleinstance storage pool such that the data transfer to the cloud (or for a local snapshot) is effectively an incremental backup of deduplicated, compressed data, resulting in faster backup times. Optimized Restores StorSimple appliances provide optimized restores by leveraging local snapshot data and metadata whenever possible, helping to reduce the number of requests and amount of data transferred from the cloud on restore. Further, performing a restore from a Cloud Snapshot or a Cloud Clone requires retrieval of only the volumes metadata from the cloud, meaning backup copies can be brought online quickly in the event of a restore or disaster.
